25.01.2022 Some of our boarding cats here this week.

22.01.2022 GROSS (BUT INTERESTING) CONTENT AHEAD LOOK AWAY NOW IF YOU ARE EATING SPAGHETTI ... ... ... This is a Spirometra tapeworm, aka Zipper or Gecko Tapeworm, found today. They can apparently get over a metre in length. This one was 30cms long. They are way more common than you think! But you may not even know if your cat has one... Cats can get these when they eat geckos, lizards, frogs etc. Even if you do not let your cat outside they can still end up with this tapeworm i...f they hunt geckos inside your house. The ‘normal’ worming treatments that most of us do on our cats, DOES NOT cover this specific type of tapeworm that we have up here in FNQ. A SEPARATE worming tablet every 3 months will help PREVENT these nasty buggers from ending up inside your cats small intestines! (and then in their poo , and then on Jodie’s camera roll ). These are usually very easy to treat once found so don’t stress!! Have pinched some info from our local vets page for you to read. Please talk to your own vet if you have any questions or concerns about this. enjoy your lunch. See more

17.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE! If anyone would like to donate any items to the Yaps Cats in Bungalow, these items are what we are in need of most, at the moment. Coles/Woolies brand bleach & domestos. Dishwashing liquid (any). Any brand of Tuna tins (must be in springwater, not oil). ... Any flavours of fancy feast tins. Any kitten wet food tins. Revolution treatments for cats. We will also take any cat toys and any small, unwanted (but not falling apart) scratchie posts! We are located at 167 McCoombe st, and we have a little green donation bin at our front gate, from 8am-5pm. This little bin is checked a few times a day by our staff. If you live at the beaches, cat donations are also able to be dropped off at Yaps Dogs at Smithfield. Ph: 4057 6373. 16.01.2022 Just discovered this little family run business. If anyone has family or friends in the defence force, let them know about this company that helps relocate defence family’s pets when they move.

15.01.2022 This is our Maine Coon Miss Tee! She is a regular boarding cat with us. Only 11kgs .... We will post some more photos of her in the comments too... We don’t get to see Maine Coon’s very often, so it’s always a special time when she comes for a visit!

13.01.2022 This is Flossy and Stevie. They often stay with us while mum and dad work away. Flossy (mixed colours) is 14 years old! And dear old Stevie (the tabby) will be 22 years old in January!!! He looks sad but he just told me that is his everyday normal face. ... So just when you think your cat is getting old... remember Stevie, still going strong at nearly 22!!

13.01.2022 One of our staff members had to say goodbye to her dear old friend Fergus yesterday. We will all miss you at work Fergus. Thought we could all leave a nice comment below for Shirley to read later.

12.01.2022 LET’S TALK ABOUT PARALYSIS TICKS! Unfortunately tick season is in full swing at the moment and we have been inundated with paralysis tick patients These critte...rs cause paralysis by injecting neurotoxins via their saliva into the host which not only affects the muscles involved in standing and walking, but also those involved breathing and in swallowing which left untreated will ultimately lead to death. All creepy crawlies on your pets are unwanted but it is especially important to know how to identify paralysis ticks. The best way to tell them apart are by the legs, paralysis ticks have legs near their head in a V shape where as the bush/brown or cattle ticks have the legs spaced out around the body. Here is a handy rhyme to remember it: Spaced Out Arms - Do No Harm Legs Near The Head - Get the Vet out of Bed! Paralysis ticks are an emergency so it’s important to recognize the signs, these include: Lack of coordination Weakness Collapse Vomiting or retching Change of bark or meow Difficulty breathing If you do find a tick on your pet, remove it immediately with tweezers or a tick-removing device, by gently twisting or rotating the tick off and avoiding squeezing it’s body. After you remove the tick, make sure to keep it and bring it to your vet for identification. Even once a paralysis tick has been removed a dog or cat that was previously unaffected start to show signs of tick paralysis up to 72 hours after removal or if they are already showing signs to deteriorate further over the same time frame. If your pet is showing any signs of tick paralysis, seek veterinary attention immediately! Preventative treatment is crucial in protecting your furry family members, so if your dog or cat is not up to date with with their parasite prevention now is the perfect time to get on top of it! There is a great range of products to choose from including the Nexguard range, the Bravecto range (which also includes cats), Revolution Plus and Seresto. just to name a few! If you’re not sure which product is right for you ask us! Contact our friendly team about our Best For Pets program where you can get 10% off our parasite prevention products! Did you know that Balaclava Vet is open 7 days a week and has a Vet and Vet Nurse on call for emergencies 24/7-365 days a year? All you have to do is call (07) 4054 2166 and press 1 to speak to a Vet!

08.01.2022 Here’s some interesting facts about cats you may or may not know: cats can spend up to 70% of their lives sleeping. a cat was the mayor of an Alaskan town for 20 years. a litter of kittens is called a kindle. a group of cats of called a clowder. ... a cat can jump 7 times higher then its own height. the heaviest cat on record died in 1986 at 10 years old and weighed 21kgs! a cat’s sense of taste is weak. Cats have 473 taste buds whereas human can have around 9000! Cats make up for this deficiency with a superior sense of smell. Their most powerful response to food is through smell, not taste. a cats sense of smell can be up to 15 times stronger than ours. POST SOME PHOTOS OF YOUR FELINE FRIENDS IN THE COMMENTS
