20.01.2022 YARCK HALL - INTERESTING FACT NO:1 DID YOU KNOW the land where the Yarck Mechanics Institute & Library (public hall) is currently situated was purchased in 1887 by the committee for 10 pounds, plus 5 pounds in taxes and costs (the equivalent of $30). In July 1888 Mr. J. Heffernan of Gobur was awarded the tender for the construction of the hall at a cost of 325 pounds ($650). A Grand Ball was held on 12th December 1888 to mark the opening of our wonderful hall. 131 years later the hall is still being run by a volunteer committee of management, ensuring this old beauty can be enjoyed by Yarck and the surrounding community.

11.01.2022 YARCK HALL COMMITTEE PROFILE - NO 2 SHARON FOX - SECRETARY YH: How long have you been on the hall committee? SF: I joined in 2012... YH: What inspired you to be apart of this committee? SF: I grew up in Yarck and after living in Melbourne for 40 years I decided to come back to the family farm, and with a family history of involvement in the hall I thought I would like to continue the association. YH: What do you love about living in Kanumbra? SF: A better way to put it is "What don't I miss?". I don't miss the traffic, crowded trains, people who don't make eye contact, neighbours you never see behind their high fences. I love living on the farm that my great grandfather selected in 1871 and caring for the land and animals. YH: Finally - What would you say to anyone thinking of joining the Yarck Hall committee? SF: It's very rewarding knowing you are helping preserve our 130 year old hall, the only public building in Yarck that can have so many uses. Although our committee works hard, we have fun and coming from many different backgrounds we have a diverse range of skills. Being on a committee is great for personal development and learning new skills. Thanks to Sharon for her hard work and commitment, not just on the hall committee but with the other volunteer work she does with in the community.
