25.01.2022 Temperatures are set to soar over the next few days and could climb above 40 on Sunday. A good old Southerly buster is expected to arrive late on Sunday afternoon, following a day of hot north-westerly winds. Thunderstorms could be around, so keep an eye out for smoke from any spot fires caused by lightning strikes. The long grass in the paddocks will dry out very quickly with the heat, so take care with mowing or slashing. If the blades hit a rock, it takes only one spark to start a fire in hot and windy conditions that might clear your grass, fences and possibly your house. Not a good idea. Please ring 000 if you see any unattended fires or smoke.

24.01.2022 COMMUNITY PLEASE NOTE A Total Fire Ban has been declared for tomorrow in our region. This means no fires are to be lit or maintained in the open. This also means that welding, grinding or gas cutting cannot be done in the open. It is also time to reconsider your plans to slash the paddock or mow around the house. The RFS does not recommend using a tractor, slasher or mower as one spark is enough to start a fire and the hot and windy conditions will cause it to spread rapid...ly. For tomorrow we suggest everyone finds something cool to do away from the heat. Keep an eye out for any smoke or fire. Please ring 000 if you see anything. For more information about the Total Fire Ban go to: http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//fdr-and-/total-fire-ban-rulesIt See more

24.01.2022 THE BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY released this season's Summer Climate Summary yesterday. These are some of the take-home messages for our community.... "Australia can expect a wetter than normal summer, but bush and grass fires cannot be ruled out completely" "The Bureau's Head of Operational Climate Services Dr Andrew Watkins said this means large parts of eastern Australia have an increased risk of flooding". "There's a great chance of grass fires in some areas as recent rain and... warm weather have led to vigorous vegetation growth. South eastern Australia is one of the most fire-prone regions in the world. Even short periods of hot and dry weather increase the risk of fire in summer." So keep in mind that an emergency plan for your family should cover both fire and flood. No power, no access to shops, no phone coverage. Don't waste time worrying about what might happen. Be prepared and sleep well at night. The ABC is your emergency broadcaster and has some great tips for preparing your home and property. 23.01.2022 IS THIS OLD TECHNOLOGY OR YOUR BEST FRIEND IN A FIRE, FLOOD or STORM? Computers and mobile phones are fine to get updates when you have electricity, the internet and a phone signal but Valley folk are familiar with black outs, black spots and general outages. Radios might seem like such old technology but in emergencies can be a vital source of information when all else fails. Our emergency broadcaster on the Central Coast is ABC 92.5FM. You can find out more at: https://about.abc.net.au/tag/emergency-broadcasting/ Make sure your emergency kit includes a radio and don't forget the batteries. Hint: Don't store the batteries in the radio as they make a mess if they leak.

22.01.2022 We recommend this ABC article to everyone... https://mobile.abc.net.au//how-to-plan-and-prepar/12796906

We look forward to working with you again in 2021 to keep our community safe. PS Don't forget to check your house numbers on the street so we can find you easily if we need to come a-calling!

19.01.2022 We were also most grateful for the community support for donations of both food and money and for participating in the Community Meeting that was held at the Station. We also appreciated the cards and letters of support we received from school children and their wonderful teachers.

17.01.2022 FLYING EMBERS ARE PERFECT LITTLE FIRE STARTERS. Last December, the leaves, twigs and bark on this tree at Mangrove Mountain, just to the west of George Downes Drive created a spectacular display of burning embers. In a strong wind these perfect little fire lighters could have travelled kilometres ahead of the main fire front to come down into our Valley. The reason why most houses and sheds burn down is due to flying embers landing on flammable parts of a building. Trees and ...shrubs close by can also catch on fire and spread to the structures. Even the Welcome mat at the front door can be an excellent ignition point. Take action well before you are trying to put out multiple spot fires on your property that were started by flying embers. 14.01.2022 IMPORTANT COMMUNITY INFORMATION Due to the hot and windy weather over the weekend any permits that were approved for pile burns have been suspended. For information in regards to permits phone 1300 661 401. Report any smoke or fires by ringing 000.

14.01.2022 HOW BIG CAN A BURN PILE BE TO GET A PERMIT? RFS brigades are frequently called out to assist with pile burns that have gone amiss. Even a small fire that gets out of control can spread very rapidly putting lives, property and animals under threat. For our district the rules about creating a pile of material for a burn off are set by Central Coast Council and the RFS issues permits based on compliance with these rules. They specify how big the pile can be, the location of the... pile, the clearances you will need around the pile and other things you need to know and do. So, before you make your burn pile and request a permit, check out the rules. Go to: https://cdn.centralcoast.nsw.gov.au//openpileburningpolicy These rules apply to pile burns at all times of the year and not just in the fire season. Yarramalong Brigade are concerned for everyone’s health and safety, but we would remind our community that if you light a fire that does not conform to the regulations from Council and the RFS, substantial fines, prison sentences and civil law suits may apply. So, know the rules, apply for a permit, and keep our community safe.

10.01.2022 ANOTHER WARM DAY and VERY HIGH fire rating. Anyone holding a permit to do a pile burn needs to be aware that all permits have been suspended for today. The wind is predicted to be 30-40 kilometres/ hour from the North-East at the coast, but locals know that the wind speeds and direction in our valleys can be quite different and is likely to be more from the north. There is the possibility of a gusty storm late in the day. Report any smoke or fire by ringing 000. Stay safe and fire free.

06.01.2022 The members of all your local Rural Fire Brigades are pleased that the current weather conditions are allowing a reprieve from the extreme conditions of late 2019 and early 2020. As Christmas approaches we can reflect upon the long season of intense activity that the members of Yarramalong Brigade were a part of. Members were deployed all over NSW as well as our own back yard and we hope you enjoy a few of the images of members in action.

06.01.2022 PLEASE LOOK IN YOUR LETTERBOX Yarramalong Brigade is aiming to provide more information to our community about fires and how to prepare for the bush fire season. Our Captain Dave Nouwens is holding the first of our community newsletters being delivered to every house in the Yarramalong Valley. The newsletter contains information about pile burn permits, stortz fittings and facts about the biggest of our trucks to make sure it can get onto your property. Keep a look out for the newsletter and please have a read as we try to keep our community a safer place to live. Our Brigade would also like to acknowledge the generous donation by Officeworks at Tuggerah who printed this newsletter at no cost.

03.01.2022 SMOKE IS DANGEROUS At a recent Hazard Reduction (HR) burn the Rural Fire Brigade members participating in the operation needed to fall back at intervals from the fire front due to the intensity of the smoke. As this was a controlled HR, this was possible without losing control of the fire and causing any issues. However, in the event of a bush fire approaching your house, the smoke ahead of the flames can reduce visibility to zero and force you to seek shelter when you need t...o be defending your house from ember attack. Personal protection equipment (PPE) is essential to have in your emergency kit bag if you have elected to stay and defend you house. Masks, goggles, hats, long sleeved shirts and long pants of non-synthetic material and strong boots are all required. The RFS have an excellent check list of suitable clothing. 02.01.2022 FIRES THEN FLOODS - 2020 has had it all without even adding in COVID19. It is so easy to forget about fires when the rain is falling. The moisture in the ground and the warm summer temperatures will bring beautiful new growth in pastures and the forests around us.
