18.01.2022 This year’s council elections are vitally important to the future and rapid development of Lilydale while preserving and enhancing our town’s rich heritage. Wit...h this in mind and reflecting the issues which have been raised by the Lilydale & District Historical Society, its members and the wider community for almost 50 years, I emailed 6 questions to each candidate in Billanook and Melba wards which cover Lilydale. It was wonderful 10 of the 12 candidates took the time to respond to the questions. To read the questions and the candidates’ responses to each please go to: https://lilydalehistorical.com.au/candidate-responses-lily/ Sue Thompson President Lilydale & District Historical Society. 18.01.2022 As a member of the LXRP Stakeholders Group representing heritage through the Lilydale & District Historical Society, I have sought to bridge the gaps so to spea...k between the new modern railway station and the historic Lilydale township precinct. Four issues have emerged and so far we have been successful on one: having the 15m high white concrete bridge across the Main Street clad to blend with the Warburton Rail Trail bridge so we can tell the stories of our railways past and present. The other heritage issues are: 1. keeping the English style plantings at the new station precinct to blend with our Queens Jubilee Avenue of trees and the town’s other great English street trees and try and keep our country town feel in Lilydale. We need to say what we want included. 2. Incorporating a digital clock on the lift tower to reflect the town’s determination to have a clock that ran on time so they could catch the train. One was an early electric clock in the David Mitchell gates at Melba Park and the other outside the Post Office. Both have disappeared but both have a special story to tell. 3. Incorporating red bricks into the design to recognize the statewide contribution our 8 local clay pits and brickmakers made to Lilydale and Victoria. I have not asked for red bricks everywhere at the new station but merely a feature such as a sculpture, seat etc. to honour brick makers such as Cook and Henry Hyne whose bricks built so many of our buildings. We have identified at least 15 buildings of which 11 are still standing. To read our brick making story download our Bricks by the Million Book https://lilydalehistorical.com.au/other-merchandise-lilyda/ For some reason, the LXRP designers won’t even consider it their designs are set and they don’t want to change their thinking at all. The John Street bridge is to be demolished and there will be plenty of red bricks which can be re-cycled and used in the station precinct. I’m calling on you, our Facebook supporters and people who care about our history to help. We need to link the present and the past through stories and features and the LXRP doesn’t seem to quite understand that. You can help by expressing your opinion on the above three issues by emailing the LXRP direct. I know they read everything and do listen. Perhaps with the red bricks you can also suggest what that feature could be. The contact details are: T: 1800 105 105 E: [email protected] The Lilydale project can be views at https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au//maroondah-highway-lilyd Please share this and encourage others to have input before it is too late. Alternatively, you can give me your feedback positive or negative - and I will ensure it reaches the LXRP team. Sue Thompson See more

Some clients are supported but quite a few are really getting down, as most of us are. I am looking for ideas or contac...ts for what we might be able to put in the bags and any sources I can contact in the Yarra valley. 03.01.2022 Let's hope everyone reads this as we don't want trucks stuck under the bridge. As part of the Maroondah Level Crossing Removal Project, William Street East and ...West will change permanently becoming one-way from 5 November 2020. Traffic will only be able to enter William Street West from the Maroondah Highway, and from John Street into William Street East. Please be aware that the John Street rail bridge is only 2.7 metres in height, therefore trucks and vehicles higher than this must follow the advised routes as outlined in the map below. Previously, vehicles over 2.7 metres high were able to turn into William Street West if they were unable to fit under the bridge this will no longer be possible. John Street remains open and accessible for vehicles under 2.7 metres in height. Please be aware that between now and 5 November, there will be several impacts on William Street East with intermittent closures and narrowing of the road whilst we undertake works. Should you have any queries or require further clarification, please contact the Level Crossing Removal Call Centre on 1800 105 105.
