25.01.2022 Today's update is all about exotics! Did you know that Ashford sell packets of exotic fibres, just waiting for you to add into your next spinning or weaving. Whether it's possum, mulberry silk, tussah silk, or even linen, if it can be spun, then Ashford have it! I was surprised that they sold possum, but then l realised, "Why not?" Possums are pests in New Zealand, so why not capitalize on the fibre! Please note that some of the above fibres are only available in 1Kg bumps, so just be aware of that fact! But l can get it to you double quick if your heart desires it!

23.01.2022 Today's update is going to be about us. This year has been hard for a lot of us, and finally we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. No, it's not a train hurtling towards us; it's the freedom to walk in a park or visit our families again! Things that have been denied to alot of us for so long! So, let's spoil ourselves for Christmas! Yes, it's coming around quicker and quicker! So, what's on YOUR wishlist? What can Santa tuck under the tree for his very favourite craf...ter? Could it be a new weaving stool to replace that kitchen chair that just isn't the right height to weave at comfortably for long periods of time? Or what about a new spinning wheel? Maybe a fancy Elizabeth wheel? Santa would love to help you to get them! You could wrap them up after delivery, and be all surprised on Christmas Day. Just say the word, and l'll order you up whatever your heart desires. Check out www.ashford.co.nz See more

19.01.2022 All the presents are wrapped, and l've checked my list twice. I have presents for everyone who l was supposed to buy for! I have the Ham, l have the chicken. I have all the food that l'm supposed to have ! Now, who have l forgotten?? Me, of course! What would I like under the tree this year? Probably the people l won't ever see again; mum and dad. I know that l will be soon scattering mum's ashes at sea, when we can again travel to Fiji, but l still miss them! But most people... will never know that l'm hurting inside. I will smile, and enjoy Christmas like so many others in my position. So if l seem overly quiet on Christmas day, just leave me alone; l'm ok. Just silently drinking a toast to those not around the table this time of year. Ok, now that l've got that out of my system. What's under your tree this year for you? Can you keep a secret? It's a big one! Don't tell my family,PLEASE! I've ordered an electric drum carder! SHUSH! It's on the preorder list from Ashfords. Even as a dealer, l don't have a photo of it! Maybe it will look like this? We don't even have a release date at this stage! Anyway, to all my faithful followers (and YOU know who you are!), l hope you have a very happy holiday time, and that you get everything that Santa or your family can give you. If not, check out the Ashford catalogue, and give me a buzz! Always the enabler! See more

19.01.2022 Today's update is all about silk and merino. Beautiful fibres in their own right, but put them together and they are just sublime! And guess what? You have had all the hard work of dyeing, carding and blending those fibres together to create some lovely combinations, thanks to Ashford! That's right. All the hard work has been done for you! Just look at those blends; aren't your fingers itching to lay your hands on them and start spinning them straight away? I know l do! So if you want to add to your palette of colors, you can't go past these lovely colors.

18.01.2022 Tonight’s update is going to be short and sweet. Most people know that my other job is as a disability support worker. It is so rewarding to me, and l look forward to visiting my clients a lot. As a caring, sharing type of person, l can’t help becoming involved in my clients’ lives. So it was a pleasure and a big surprise to be invited to his son’s upcoming wedding this week. It was totally out of the blue. In fact, l didn’t even know there was a wedding on the cards! So this Thursday, l shall attend my client’s son’s wedding to a gorgeous, petite Pilipino girl, who l hope to get to know better! Congratulations to the happy couple!

17.01.2022 Hands up those people who are hoping that Santa thinks they've been good this year! Who's hoping for a drum carder? Wouldn't that be a great thing to find under the tree. Head on over to www.ashford.co.nz, and look at the range of carders that they have for sale! If you get your skates on, l can order one for you/ on behalf of "your significant other", and it can be under the tree , waiting for you! Maybe you could make some WOW batts like these!

14.01.2022 Today's update is all about fibres. How do you tell what is on that op-shop brought cone that was a steal at $2? The simple way is to burn a length of it. Down the bottom of this update, l hope that l have put a clear chart showing the results of doing a burn test! But before you start testing every fibre in sight, a few safety tips. -Always have a bowl of water handy. This is just in case the fibre gets away from you, and races towards your tender fingers. -Use a pair of kit...chen tongs. Just make sure they have a tight grip. You don't want blobs of molten goo dropping all over the place! -Do your burning somewhere safe! Your new kitchen bench is NOT the place. Outside in a non-windy place is great. At least put the ventilation on if you must burn in your kitchen! When you are testing a fibre, you will need to smell it. Just wait for it to go out before putting it anywhere near your face and nose. No one wants 3rd -degree burns on their nose! Oh, and don't forget to make notes so you know what is on that cone! HAPPY TESTING!!! See more

13.01.2022 Let me start tonight’s update by saying Happy New year to everyone! I don’t know about you, but l was glad to see THAT year end! Maybe l did get more crafting done, and by crafting, l mean spinning! But my stash just doesn’t seem to have gone down AT ALL! Maybe it was those 4 bags of Suffolk that snuck in late in November. Are they breeding, or something? I wash a small handful, and before l know it, it’s filled a pillowcase!! My fermented suint vat has never worked harder! I... even got a friend of mine to spin a small amount up, just to see if it did come out white or cream! The answer to that question is cream! She always does a beautiful job of cleaning up a fleece and spinning it. Thanks Lou! So, has everyone made a new year’s resolution? I haven’t this year. I get depressed when l can’t live up to them. So this year readers, l have just made an investment. I will admit; l’m a hoarder! I know that my house is full of stuff that l just can’t let go of! So, the only way l can keep it manageable, is to employ someone. Yes, l have a cleaner! She has been once last week, and we have cleaned OUT our (my husbeast and I’s) bedroom! It took all day, and 4 garbage bags later, l feel like a new person! I think it was just having someone to be the impartial person, and ask me the hard questions! I tried Marie Kondo; but doing it on my own just didn’t cut it! I can justify keeping anything! But having someone who you are paying to help you, was what l needed! I know l’m not ready to let them into my craft room yet. Baby steps for me! But they are coming this week, and l know l can de-clutter (THERE, l said it!!!) if l just take my time. And pay them of course! Stay safe this week, and if you need a good cleaning agency, let me know! See more

12.01.2022 To all my loyal readers and new customers, thank you for supporting Fibres this year. See you all out at the markets and festivals!

06.01.2022 Sitting here in the sun, my stall is all set up. Come on down to Doncaster Hill market. Located behind the council offices in Doncaster Road. Just a stones throw from Doncaster Shoppingtown. Here til 1pm!

05.01.2022 Have you seen the latest thing from Ashford? I'm so excited to see that they have both a manual AND an Electric ball winder! They are so compact, and l want one! An electric one! So if santa is reading this post, l have been mostly good! Well, except for those times when... OK, l've been MAINLY good! So if anyone wants one to tuck under their Christmas tree, just hit me up, and l'll order it to arrive before Christmas!

04.01.2022 Today's update is to talk books. What books do you reach for when you're starting a felting project, or to get some inspiration? I'm not a felter; l admit that. I just don't have the upper body strength to work that fibre into a felted sheet or object. But l think if l wanted to start somewhere, l'd start with a good book. I have tried needle-felting. I think l stabbed myself more than the fibre! Luckily, my tetanus injections are up to date! So, l think if l was looking for ...inspiration, l'd start with a basic book that could take me through to intermediate work. One book that springs to mind, is "The Ashford Book of Needle-felting." So l think l'd start with it. You do know that Christmas is coming, don't you? So why not get the Christmas decorations kit from Ashfords? Everything is included, so you wouldn't have to source anything! Hit me up if you want one! See more

01.01.2022 Have you seen the new upcycled possum yarn from Ashfords? It looks soo soft! Apparently, the possum fibre is a by-product of the production of scarves, hats and fingerless gloves that are made by Noble Wilde Possum Merino wear. Did l forget to mention that it's blended with New Zealand Merino? I guess l did! This 8 ply yarn is a sustainable choice made from upcycled possum fur and merino wool. Off-cuts from garments and yarn that doesn't make it into a finished product are ...shredded by local partners in Christchurch and then sent down the road to be carded and blended with virgin wool at Ashfords, and then spun into a beautifully soft hand knitting yarn. 8 ply / 50gm / 150m 25% Possum Fur / 75% Merino Wool. I know it's hot at the moment, but in an air-conditioned room, you could whip up a beanie or two for the coming winter for all those people you love! Dare l say it? Valentines Day! If you want me to order some in for you, just let me know! Check out the range of colors at; ashfordcraftshop.co.nz Available in 4 colourways. $18.90 per ball.
