25.01.2022 The first row of spring carrots are sown. Next to a lovely green oat crop, which has been evenly mown by the marauding pony. #yarravalleygarlic #dandenongranges #organicfarming #localfood #regenerativeagriculture

24.01.2022 Swam time! Caught this swarm today, now to figure out if they are from the wild hive in the old chestnut tree or if they are from our own hive. #yarravalleygarlic #dandenongranges #beeswarm #regenerativeagriculture

23.01.2022 The girls are top and tailing in the favoured nesting boxes, and there is a queue of hens on the perch waiting for their turn. Spring is in the air! #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #austrolorp #organicfarming

22.01.2022 When you tell the junior bee keeper, that she will not be assisting with the honey harvest this afternoon, as we are not driving around to our friends house to borrow her spare suit, due to the travel restrictions~ Said child spends the morning sewing herself a bee suit, complete with rubber gloves, and masking tape for all the gaps. #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #lockdowninovation #regenerativeagriculture #homemadebeesuit

22.01.2022 Our first honey harvest from the Christmas swarm~ A beautiful capped frame of honey, with entirely bee built comb, and our junior bee keeper inspecting a brood frame showing brood comb, surrounded with capped honey. Thank you to Tracey and Janis from @beewise_beekeepers for being so generous with your time, knowledge, and helping us set up a home for the surprise Christmas bee swarm. #yarravallygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #regenerativeagriculture #beewisebeekeepers

22.01.2022 Our duckling deficiency is now sorted~ These little Khaki Campbell girls will be our future slug patrol team in the market garden. For now though there will be lots of duckling snuggles, and sleeping babes tucked up jumpers. #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #farmlife #regerativeagriculture #ducklings

19.01.2022 @tamara_griffiths_ and her cheeky Raven at Forest edge permaculture nursery in Kallista, have a great range in store of @seedfreaks seeds for your spring planting pleasure. #yarravalleygarlic #dandenongranges #localfood #permaculture

19.01.2022 This swarm landed in the same branch of the same orange tree as the swarm from last summer. We don’t know enough about bees to understand why this is? Pretty sure they are from the same wild hive in the old Chestnut tree. The junior beekeeper was very happy that she had her own full bee suit, and could catch the swarm herself. Thanks Tracey from @beewise_beekeepers for your advice today. #yarravalleygarlic #dandenongranges #beeswarm

18.01.2022 Farm dog Ned and some dramatic spring sky. Returning from our walk checking on the market garden field, between the sleeting rain showers. #melbournespringtime #yarravalleygarlic #holdoffwiththetomatoseedlings #organicfarming #regenerativeagriculture #localfood

18.01.2022 Pickled spring garlic ~ Wild brine, or lacto- fermented. Spring garlic, rain or spring water and sea salt (500ml of water to 2 teaspoons of salt) Pack the spring garlic into a jar, leaving enough room for a weight, add peppercorns or herbs, add the brine and a weight, making sure that the garlic is all under the brine. Leave on a shelf out of the direct sun for a week or so, burping your jar every day or so (opening the lid to release the gases) The garli...c to is ready to eat when it stops bubbling. Keeps in the fridge indefinitely. You can use it as you would use fresh garlic, add to dressings, garlic butter, pesto, or with some sautéed greens. #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #springgarlic #lactofermentation See more

17.01.2022 Catching a bee swarm from from the orange tree in the garden. Thankful for my der friend Beth who was quick to lend a hand with a spare hive and a bee suit. Nothing like a steep learning curve. #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #swarmingbees

16.01.2022 It is almost asparagus time, always such a welcome sight after a long winter. It is such a sure sign that the ground is warming up and the days are getting a little longer. #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #springtime

15.01.2022 The bee swarm were coaxed into their new home, and are now all tucked in for the night. We will see what they think of it in the morning! #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #beeswarm #regenerativeagriculture

15.01.2022 I have lovely Organic Heritage Tomato seedlings and spring veggies at @kallistamarket market today. It is still a bit early to plant out your tomatoes in the hills at the moment, best to wait a couple more weeks, or give them some protection. I will have plenty more next month too. #yarra valley garlic #kallistamarket #thedandenongranges #heritagetomatoes #localagriculture #seedfreaks

11.01.2022 Double rainbows on a spring afternoon at the farm. #yarravalley garlic #dandenongranges

09.01.2022 The Quince Smyrna or Turkish quince, are looking stunning right now with their large blushed blossoms. It is the trees third year, planted amongst the old apple orchard, and they are looking promising. I can already picture and smell the Ruby fruit, bubbling away on the stove top in late summer. #yarravalleygarlic #quinceblossom #yarravalley #dandenongranges #regenerativeagriculture

06.01.2022 Come and get some spring goodness at Kallista Morning, we have spring greens, spring garlic, rainbow chard, Brussel sprout sprouts, mixed citrus, and pastures free range eggs. #yarravalleygarlic #dandenongranges #Kallistamarket #organicproduce #localproduce

06.01.2022 A bountiful, bonus harvest of gourmet mushrooms for our dinner tonight. Yum. All from @kingoystermushrooms spent mushroom bags. Which will then go into our compost, and eventually onto our market garden beds to feed the soil and earthworms. #yarravalleygarlic #yarravalley #dandenongranges #lowfoodmiles #organicfarming

05.01.2022 An amazing sunrise on the farm this morning, with the silver wattles- Acacia dealbata in full bloom, and so much bird song. Spring is well and truely around the corner. #yarravalleygarlic #dandenongranges #smallscaleregenerativeagriculture

04.01.2022 Such a nurturing way to spend the depth of winter The the beautiful town of Willunga in South Australia~ At The 2019 Deep Winter Agrarians gathering with farmers, educators, gardeners and advocates from all around Australia. Four days of talking, sharing, farm tours, feasting and dancing. Learning from the inspirational microbiologist Walter Jehne about the soil carbon sponge. Back home on home soil now, renewed. Though the coldest winter days are yet to come, it feels like we are definitely heading into the light. #yarravalleygarlic #deepwinteragrarians #regenerativeagriculture

02.01.2022 My wonderful open pollinated seed order has arrived promptly from @seedfreaks Cool climate adapted seed from Tassie, perfect for our local Hills growing conditions.
