22.01.2022 REMEMBERING VERN SMITHWICK Club legend Jimmy Hassett shares some fond memories of Vern and the contribution he made to the club. My first memory of Vern takes me back to the 1970's and his attention to detail as our secretary. Together with 4 or 5 other committee members Vern was integral in setting up the Yarraville club Cricket Club to become the successful, proud club that is playing a very good brand of cricket today. ... Back in the 70's BBQs were one way of raising some money and Vern and Norma were brilliant hosts, making sure that everyone had plenty to eat and drink and that everyone was having a great time. Back in the late 70's, early 80's cricketers never did much of a warm-up, we would get there maybe an hour before starting, we had plenty of time to wait. Vern filled the time before starting the game by bringing a load of sandwiches and Alan Pollock would supply all the Coca-Cola - opposition sides would look on with envy. Vern was brilliant as a secretary, as in those days (pre computers), it was always pen and paper on lots and lots of forms to complete. Vern had no peer as secretary when you consider his workload without the use of computers. Vern was opinionated and that is exactly what you need as an important part of our strong committee. When Vern was asked to do something, you would move straight on to the next task as you knew Vern would absolutely complete his job. Vern has left a massive legacy at the Yarraville club cricket club, as every secretary since has performed with the same fervour as Vern - he set the benchmark. Vern you will always be remembered fondly at the cricket club, especially by some of us oldies who really appreciated your wisdom, character and your contribution to our great club. Jimmy

In the meantime, please stay safe and look after one another. If you have any questions regarding the upcoming season, please message us and we'll do our best to answer them for you.
