16.01.2022 The north coast is mourning the loss of Uncle Kevin Torrens who was a loved and respected Elder of the Western Bundjalung people. [Advisory: Posted with the per...mission of Mr Torrens' family] Most knew Mr Torrens as a softly spoken man, who brought a gentle but persistent persuasion to being a trailblazer, committed to improving the lives of his people. In 1982 when he was one of New South Wales' first Aboriginal teacher aides he started the preschool at Tabulam - and with parents and the Education Department provided a place for the Indigenous and non-Indigenous children of Tabulam to learn and play. For 12.5 years he was part of the Aboriginal cultural support and case management teams of the Balund-a Program, the world's only correctional facility where offenders are sent to live and work before they are sentenced, in a bid to keep them out of prison. He was a cultural mentor to residents and his work colleagues. The story in this video post was another pioneering achievement. When Mr Torrens' ageing father-in-law Ernie Hickling asked him to get back the lands of his ancestors, it seemed like an impossible mission, but he succeeded against all odds. That property called Jubal was among the first land purchases in the early years of the Indigenous Land Corporation's buy back scheme. "Those early ones are significant because in those first few years it was about building the Indigenous estate," Ms Button said. The team at ABC North Coast send our condolences to Mr Torrens' family, friends and the Bundjalung peoples.

10.01.2022 "It's more than just a burn, it's a healing process." The Bega Valley shire was one of the hardest-hit regions in last season's bushfires, with 365,000 hectares... of land burned and close to 500 homes destroyed. But over recent years, the region has also been home to a resurgence of the traditional practice of cultural burning, to heal the land and promote biodiversity. The Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council is one of the biggest private landholders in the Bega Valley, with title to 1,800 hectares of former Crown land claimed through the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act. The Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council cultural burning crew's traditional burns have been proven to protect the land from bushfires. But without secure, long-term funding, the capacity to maintain and scale-up their traditional fire regime is limited.
