23.01.2022 THINK OF YOUR PETS THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE New Year’s celebrations can be frightening to any animal left outdoors. Where possible, you should aim to bring your pets... inside and stay with them. If you can muffle any outside noises via closed windows and curtains, we encourage you to do so. Ensure your animals microchip information and information tag on their collar is up to date just in case. See more

19.01.2022 Today marks a special day for the Animal Poisons Helpline, one year since we switched on the phones. Since then, the Helpline has assisted over 6,000 poisoned... pets from all over Australia and New Zealand, no doubt saving countless precious lives. The number of pet owners contacting the Helpline each month has increased by nearly 300% from the beginning of the year, a clear testament to the necessity of this important service. 2020 has been a challenging year for many, and for the Helpline it would not have been possible without the support of the pet loving community and our platinum sponsors, Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance (Bow Wow Meow for Pets) and Hill's Pet Nutrition (Hill’s Pet Nutrition). In 2021, we look forward to continuing to provide rapid, up-to-date, and evidence-based free poisoning advice to pet owners in Australia and New Zealand!

12.01.2022 It has certainly been a challenging and rewarding year! We (NEVAA) started our Mission 1yr ago today, when the fires started and Aligned ourselves with Loretta... and Mo of Moah's Ark Yarrawonga Wildlife Shelter within 10 days as they had the knowledge of the shelters within the Northeast Victoria but little did we all know there was 58 shelters and approximately 170ish foster carers.. I have a feeling we may have missed a few..but we will find them and help them as well. We found out that our Aussie wildlife shelters & carers had little or no real support in caring for our wildlife, most of them would pay for medical supplies, milk formulas, hard feed out of their own pockets. In this time we have met some amazing people worldwide, Yes..WORLDWIDE!! Receiving items from UK, Scotland, France, Canada, USA, Australia and so many more places. It is with your support that we will continue to support them all year round whether it's fires, drought, heat stress, road trauma, orphaned and others situations that may arise. Our aim is to have supplies ready and available for them in advance. A Massive THANKYOU to you all and we are forever grateful. The list of people, businesses, companies and groups is huge. Over the next few days I will be thanking people/businesses for how they have helped us throughout this year.. Stay tuned for a re-cap of this past year.. Many, Many Blessings to you all..

11.01.2022 Happy Hump Day.

10.01.2022 A BIG Happy Birthday to our awesome Veterinarian, Dr Amanda. Hope you had a fabulous day at work. We love you heaps. #workfamily #teamyvc #ThanksHealthHeroes

07.01.2022 What to do if you find a FLEDGLING:

07.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/groups/277020405687445/permalink/3618569354865850/

07.01.2022 WHEN NOT TO INTERFERE Please check out what a fledgling looks like. They are on the ground at this size for a very good reason. As the Cocky’s are ground fe...eders, mum will be teaching young how to forage and gain independence. Birds generally do not fledge(fly) straight after leaving nest. Mum/dad are watching from afar. Please refrain from picking up young birds because they do not run away from u or can’t fly. This process of fledgling to Juvenile takes sometime. We all need L plates for a while. If you notice trauma such as inability to stand, wing dropped, heat exhaustion, obvious signs of injury, then contact your local wildlife shelter. @n.e.v.a.a

06.01.2022 **ALERT** As the weather continues to warm up, we have noticed a significant increase in calls regarding pets ingesting compost. But did you know that your ...compost pile could be a serious hazard to your pet? Some pets (particularly dogs) are attracted to compost. Dogs will often put a lot of effort into trying to access compost and will readily eat it if given the chance to do so. So, what is the risk? Not only can compost contain certain discarded human food scraps which may be toxic to your pets, but it also encourages the growth of microorganisms that can result in serious complications when ingested. Mould can flourish in compost, and some strains produce toxins that are potentially life-threatening to our pets if eaten. These toxins, known as tremorgenic mycotoxins, stimulate the central nervous system resulting in profound tremors and convulsions. Clostridium botulinum is another microorganism that can grow in low oxygen environments such as compost. Ingestion of the botulinum toxin produced by these bacteria can result in a severe and persistent paralysis, known as Botulism. In its most severe form, botulism can cause paralysis of the respiratory muscles. Whilst botulism is rare, it is potentially life-threatening. If you are the owner of a mischievous pet and a compost pile, you need to put measures in place to ensure they cannot eat the compost. Compost bins that are secured with locking mechanisms work great. Other options may include fencing off the area or restricting your pets' access to that area of your garden. You should also avoid placing highly attractive food items into the compost, such as meat and dairy products. Please help us raise the awareness of pet poisoning by sharing this post with any pet-owning gardeners you may know, or to any Facebook gardening groups you may belong to. If your pet has ingested any compost, please call the Animal Poisons Helpline immediately on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for advice, even if your pet looks well. Our service is free for all pet owners. For pet poison updates, sign up to our mailing list at animalpoisons.com.au/stay-up-to-date

02.01.2022 Spring has sprung so please be mindful that mums have bubs at present so keep a look out for any wildlife that may need assistance. Remember to allow fledgling...s to be on the ground with parents nearby. They are just on their Lplates and being taught to feed independently. If nocturnal species such as possums, gliders, owls, tawny frog mouths etc are out during daylight hours, there may be an issue so please contact your local wildlife carer for assistance. A little incentive to bring a smile to your face during these unprecedented times:
