19.01.2022 Walk to School Day and Protecting our Local Environment This Friday. Once a month we encourage students, staff and families to start the school day with some physical activity. We walk with students from school, along the footpath to the grassy area near the United Service Station. We then meet students and families here who wish to join us at the half way point and tally our house points before walking back to school.... This Friday we once again are combining our Walk to School Day with our focus on reducing litter in our school and community to protect our local habitat and waterways. During our Walk to School day we will be taking the opportunity to gather as much litter as we can along the way. We will then bag and weigh this litter collection to track how much litter has been collected. On our last Walk to School Day on the 28th August we collected over 8 kg of plastic in the space of 30 mins. Our aim is to see what proactive differences we can make to our school and local area each week or month. Please meet us at School at 8.00am this Friday 16th October outside the front office or you can join us from the United Service Station at 8.15am. Remember all students who participate earn House Points. Points are allocated for children and staff who attend, children and staff who wear their house shirts and also bonus points for all children and staff who help with the Clean Up Effort along the way. What a lovely way to start the school day, walking to school with staff and friends. We look forward to seeing you there Friday 16th October .

18.01.2022 Zones of Regulation Across our classrooms from Prep to Year 6 our children are learning how to regulate their emotions and how to develop a tool kit to assist them. You may hear your child talking about The Zones of Regulation or referring to the Green, Yellow, Red or Blue Zones. The Zones of Regulation is geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. Using a cogn...itive behavior approach, learning activities are designed to help students recognize when they are in different states called "zones" with each of four zones represented by a different colour. Zones of Regulation also helps children better understand their emotions, sensory needs, and thinking patterns. They learn different strategies to help them cope and manage their emotions based on which color zone they’re in. Additionally, the Zones of Regulation helps children recognize their own triggers, learn to read facial expressions, develop problem-solving skills, and become more attuned to how their actions affect other people (Kuypers, L.M, 2011). The Green Zone The green zone is used to describe when you’re in a calm state of alertness. Being in the green zone means you are calm, focused, happy, or ready to learn. This is predominantly the state you want your child to be in. It’s also the state most needed in the classroom in order to learn. The Yellow Zone The yellow zone describes when you have a heightened sense of alertness. This isn’t always a bad thing, and you typically still have some control when you’re in the yellow zone. Being in the yellow means you may feel frustrated, anxious or nervous. But, it could also mean you’re feeling excited, silly, or hyper which is okay in the right situations. The Red Zone The red zone describes an extremely heightened state of intense emotions. When a person reaches the red zone, they’re no longer about to control their emotions or reactions. This is the zone that children are in during meltdowns. Being in the red zone means you’re feeling anger, rage, terror, or complete devastation and feel out of control. The Blue Zone The blue zone, on the other hand, is used when a person is feeling low states of alertness or arousal. When you’re in the blue zone you may be feeling down sad, sick, tired, or bored. You’re still in control, as you are in the yellow zone, but with low energy emotions. Yarrilee has its very own In the Zone song written and composed by the very talented Team Rostedt and performed by Yarrilee Voices.

15.01.2022 One More Sleep Until School Starts. We look forward to seeing all of our students back at school tomorrow for the start of the 2021 school year. Please see below a school map of 2021 classroom locations in case you are unsure of where to go. We will have members of the Yarrilee Team situated across the school to lend a hand to students and families if needed.... To ensure that we continue to keep everyone safe the following guidelines are in place across our school sites. 1. Keep your distance maintain physical distancing (1.5m) when you’re outside the school or classroom. Shaking hands, hugging and kissing hello are still not COVID safe - Please be particularly mindful of 1.5 m physical distancing at drop-off and pick-up time, in the car park, outside classrooms and at the school gate 2. Good hand hygiene sounds simple, but washing your hands properly is important. Wash your hands with soap regularly; try not to touch your face. Use hand sanitiser if you cannot wash your hands. Students will be taught this as they develop their classroom and school routines. 3. Stay home when sick It’s still important to get tested and stay home until you get the results. Isolate yourself at home and protect your family and others. What is important to remember in the new normal you can still do most things - just in different ways! Distancing does not mean disconnecting.

07.01.2022 Congratulations to All of our Children Who Have Been Working Hard to Keep Plastics out of our Waterways. As a Reef Guardian School this semester across all year levels we have been working hard to reduce the amount of litter and plastics that make their way into our waterways. All year levels have an area of the school to keep an eye on and ensure that our gardens and school play areas remain litter free. ... As part of this focus our Student Council has Adopted a Turtle, called Hector , through the World Wildlife Fund to help raise awareness of this important focus. Each week our Waster Warriors conduct a litter audit and record the amount of litter they collect in a 10 mins period to determine if we are reducing our waste. During the first audit collection 1.4 kg of plastic was collected in 10 mins. Last week our litter audit recorded 450g of litter collected in the same time period. We must all keep up the efforts we started last term to ensure that all of our waste is placed in the rubbish bins and that we don’t have plastics and other materials being washed into our gutters and water way.
