12.01.2022 *************COUNTRY CUPS************* YASS Situated in the Southern Tablelands about a 50 minute drive from Canberra, in the heart of the country’s p...rime sheep growing area is the gorgeous town of Yass. Historically known for its high quality wool and merino studs but over the past 30 years it has become increasingly known for its vineyards and its classy produce. Yass has been home to businessman Rupert Murdoch, harpist Alice Giles and trainer Lee Freedman and his brothers Anthony, Michael and Richard. The town boasts a fabulous sense of community with the classic laid-back country lifestyle with a picturesque broad main street which is litter with well preserved 19th century buildings creating a beautiful backdrop for numerous festivals and events throughout the year including the Yass Show in March and the annual Yass Picnic Cup Day held at the historic Marchmont Racecourse. The region’s racing enthusiasts have been coming to Yass since 1901 for their Cup Day, a fantastic venue to bring the family along and watch these beautiful athletes go around. The 1,350m Yass Picnic Cup (6k) has attracted a good field of 7 with Canberra being strongly represented with a trio of hopefuls, #SouthernGamble is a Cup veteran and Doug Gorrel always has him firing when it comes to the Cups placing in the Young, Lockhart, Cooma and Tumut Cups as well as winning the Tumbarumba Cup 3 back, solid at the distance (18:4-2-5) and looms as a serious player. The other two from the Canberra contingent are John Rolfe’s #RunningBroke a heavy track specialist (5:1-2-2) who will face a dry track here therefore only an outside place chance; and #JohnBoy having his first start for the David Kelley stable, first up (7:1-1-0) after running 4th in the Cooma Cup last campaign will need to improve greatly to figure late. I like #GeorgianCourt wasn’t great last start finishing 4L off but you must take notice when Maddison Wright (3:1-1-0) is in the saddle with 16 more winners than any other Picnic jockey this season, and the Natalie Jarvis (Moruya) mare likes the distance (3:1-1-0). Dean Mirfin (Bathurst) has #SkipperJoe in great touch this season (10:1:4-2) including 4 place efforts from his last 6 runs, likes the distance (6:1-1-1) and should push forward and be tough to run down. Becky Byrne (Cooma) has accepted with a pair of runners both drawing the inside and are likely to land inside the top three, #That’sTheTicket is the outsider of the field with only 2 wins from 32 starts and his last placing 8 runs back. And #CertainRiches returns from a 9 week let-up, his form last campaign was poor outside a placing in the Adaminaby Cup and can’t see him turning that form around.
