20.01.2022 Update on Kim Nelson legacy projects. In September 2016 an event was held to raise money for legacy projects in memory of much-loved local artist Kim Nelson. The event was ‘Best foot forward’ an auction of ‘wearable works of art’ by local artists, inspired by Kim’s fondness for Dunlop Volleys. Kim, more often than not, had a pair of Dunlop Volleys on his feet; he painted in them, walked up mountains in them, socialised in them and was finally cremated in them. Some of Kim’...s best works were achieved in a trusty pair of tattered Volleys, said Canberra Times journalist, Sally Hopman. Amazingly, at this event, the local community raised $10,000! Since the fundraiser in 2016, the money has funded a number of projects: The installation of a handcrafted bespoke memorial bench at Riverbank Park. A tree was also planted to protect future users of the bench from the weather. Its west-facing aspect is a perfect place to sit and watch the brilliant sunsets that Nelson, master of light, loved to paint. A donation of $1500 to UNICEF and ‘Celebration of Kim’ on the occasion of what would have been Kim’s 60th birthday. Annual Kim Nelson Art Awards at Yass High School, presented annually since 2016 to a Year 11 student to cover the costs of attending an art workshop of their choice. The remaining funds will be spent on building a mindfulness labyrinth near the memorial bench at Riverbank Park (pending Council permission) and for the Kim Nelson Art Award to continue at Yass High School. The YassArts Kim Nelson Legacy Sub-committee believe these projects honour Kim’s passions bringing art to the local community and supporting, promoting, mentoring and creating opportunities for other artists, particularly young artists and musicians.

02.01.2022 Stories from the Studio Al Phemister STA were thrilled to zoom in for a chat with sculptor and arts advocate Al Phemister in his studio in Yass, NSW. 2020 loo...ked promising. I had ideas about new Sculptures, opportunities were emerging, workshops to organise - the year felt full of possibilities. When the Coronavirus pandemic hit my art opportunities disappeared and I was stood down from my part time job. I have been confined to my home and studio. I decided to use this time as an opportunity for making, creating and trying new things. Some ideas are developing into new sculptures, while others now litter the ‘sculpture graveyard’. I have made improvements to the studio and I am learning new skills like how to use Photoshop. My daughter is studying Photography at RMIT in Melbourne and she hasn’t complained about the many phone calls for help yet! With upcoming exhibitions being cancelled, last week, two small commissions! Seems others are thinking about their own environments, and perhaps improving them. While it seems most of my art jobs have disappeared this year, I am making the most of the available time and hopefully, creating future opportunities. I miss the interaction I normally have with fellow artists and will need to seek them out via phone and social media. I am looking forward to a return to normal life but am savouring this time while I can. STA staff note: Al’s web site shows you what the artist currently has available for your collection. (the Dandelion would look amazing in my yard :)
