24.01.2022 Last year the Word Wildlife Fund reported that the Yass-Queanbeyan population area had a koala population of 100-500. Where and when was the last time a koala was sighted in the Yass district? The Yass and District Historical Society archives would like to know.

17.01.2022 Thank you to Judith from YDHS for writing this article and Yass Tribune for sharing it. ‘The land was theirs in the past, on which they lived, roamed, and prospered; the white man came and took unasked the same’ I’m sorry

16.01.2022 I’d argue we still are the top town.

12.01.2022 Did Yass once field a team of ice skaters? The above image titled 'The Royal Hotel Ice Skaters' was recently donated to the YDHS archives. Ten of the men wear blazers with the eleventh in 'civvies', all are wearing ice skates. The closest ice rink was at the Canberra Showground and opened in October 1974.... It is thought that this image may pre-date 1974. We would really like to identify the men in the image and to hear of the their sporting prowess on ice.

10.01.2022 Yass Scout, in #1943 Scouts back in the early years printed a #boyscoutsannual. Inside was lots of scouting things and place for each scout to sign their name... and date. This one is #yass #scouts signed on 9 December 1943. At this time, we were fighting in WWII, or group was celebrating our 21st Birthday and our own Scout Hall was still just a dream. I have done my best to list the names below and would love to hear from any of their family. 10.01.2022 COVID ANNOUNCEMENT It is not often that we have to limit our numbers for Society functions but Covid-19 guidelines have to be complied with. We have for the time being put a temporary hold on confirming bookings for our luncheon. This is pending the rsvp of official guests by 30 June.... However we do have a waiting list for anyone interested in attending the celebration so please email [email protected] if you would like to join us. DO NOT TRANSFER PAYMENT until we have confirmed your booking. By 1 July we will be in a position to advise if we are able to accept further bookings. We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment but the ever changing Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing regulations are beyond our control.

And t...here seems to be a wool store at the back on the left.. No date on the photo/postcard but the Stationmasters house is easily recognisable on the right.. See more

09.01.2022 As we welcome the warmer weather I can’t help but feel excited for the coming months. We open our windows, our gardens come back to life, we peel off those puffer jackets and, call me crazy, but I can even smell the faintest whiff of sunscreen in the air. Summer is on its way. This year is probably going to look a lot different for many after what has been a pretty challenging year, but I do hope that we can all make the most of this upcoming season safely. For me, I spent ...a lot of the warmer days last year at the Yass Memorial Swimming Pool. Unsure of what that might look like this year I thought you might enjoy the attached image and info from the Yass and District Historical Society to encourage us to stay safe and work towards another good summer (but please let’s skip the smoke and fires this year ok?) Yass’ first baths opened in 1927 and were located in Adele Street on the site of the carpark behind Maher’s garage. Discussions to plan an Olympic pool commenced in 1953 but the WW2 Memorial Pool did not replace the aging facility until the summer of 1964/1965. See you at the pool

08.01.2022 Our doors may be closed but we are working behind the scenes to keep bringing rich stories and experiences to you - where ever you are. Please join us. With love, the National Museum of Australia #YourMuseum

07.01.2022 Since March this year the lives of Yass Valley residents, like others world-wide, have changed in unparalleled ways. In terms of local history, social distancing guidelines due to the Covid-19 pandemic have changed the ways in which the Yass and District Historical Society can interact with the community. Recording our community’s history is an important aspect of the Society’s work and we invite you to be part of an exciting new project. The Society encourages everyone, inc...luding children, to contribute to an historical record of what occurred during that time. Locally it may have started with a shortage of toilet paper and other basic commodities on supermarket shelves but it has had far more serious repercussions over the ensuing months. We are seeking stories, photographs, anecdotes and printed material that records how the residents of Yass Valley lived (and continue to) through a time of uncertainty, upset, health challenges, job loss, financial hardship and social upheaval. In the spirit of social distancing, images and written material can be emailed directly to [email protected] or mailed to YDHS Inc, PO Box 304, Yass NSW 2582. For more info visit; https://www.yasshistory.org.au/Covid-19.html

06.01.2022 Join us for the live stream of the Remembrance Day commemoration at the Australian War Memorial.

05.01.2022 Over the past few days, the committee have been considering the advisability of the museum and archives remaining open during the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This afternoon we received advice from Museums and Galleries NSW and have decided that in the interests of our valued volunteers that we should close until it is considered safe to reopen. This is just a precautionary measure as we want to ensure individual risk is minimised to help support the health and s...afety of the wider community. Stay safe everyone.

05.01.2022 In 1882 Rudolf Casper a former piano tuner bought land in the main street of Yass, New South Wales, where he opened up three stores all with accommodation above...! Rudolf Casper had developed a reputation as a well-known photographer in Goulburn. In June 1883 he decided to open up a photographic studio in Comur Street Yass. Alongside his store was The Tribune Office and the Bank of New South Wales! 02.01.2022 Typical of heavy transport in earlier days was Fred Bateup and Billy Garland atop a load of wool drawn by a team of horses. They are resting in front of the public school after climbing the hill from the Hume Bridge. The view of the road and school looks very different today. If you’re like me you’ll be at the Yass pool over the weekend and can see this spot from the lawns. Have a good weekend everyone
