25.01.2022 A big blue sky behind the Yass Men's shed.
24.01.2022 Editorial - from the Cave - Wayne Stuart Next Saturday afternoon we have a major event in the calendar for 2020. This is how the day will unfold: 12.30: Last Saturday BBQ Tim Gee presiding ($2 for a sausage sanger)... 1.30: normal Shed activity including installation of our 2 Bush Tucker Garden signs. In addition we will be visited by 2 Federal Department of Health consultants who are on a mission to find out about Men’s Sheds and also our views on how the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) which is funded by the Department of Health might improve its service and if we have any comments on how they are performing (supporting Sheds etc) currently. 3.30pm: All assemble in the Bush Tucker Garden (need to sign in and use hand wash on arrival, social distancing to be observed (also, wearing of masks is encouraged); 3.45pm: Official Welcome: Allan McGrath, President Yass Valley Men’s Shed; and Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, to be performed by one of the local Bell family Elders. 4.00pm: Wendy Tuckerman MP to formally open the Bush Tucker Garden; 4.15pm: Aaron Chatfield to officially launch the Gardens of Yass Book. Afterwards, all visitors will be free to wander around the garden to see what is happening and to hear of our future plans etc. This Bush Tucker Garden is a Community Garden (ie not a Men’s Shed effort alone). Already, some Yass High School students have been involved in some of the plantings. Any members of the Yass Valley Community who might like to get involved will be very much welcomed and free to come to the garden at any time to help or just to enjoy it. Over time, we hope it might become a very welcoming place to come and contemplate. At this early stage, the weather looks OK so fingers crossed. Come one, come all and bring your friends and family!! Be careful everyone, and I challenge ALL members to wear a mask when in public and obey the distancing challenge. ws Editor 0419 292 022

23.01.2022 Last week I dropped into the Robertson Men's and Women's Shed to see the progress of the construction of their new shed. The shed has been made possible thanks ...to a $291,000 NSW Government grant from the Stronger Country Communities Fund. The construction of a new shed to use as a community facility to be used on separate days by each organisation to ensure that both organisations have their independence, the organization also hopes to use the facility for youth workshops in woodworking and metalworking, as well as other activities for community.
23.01.2022 Bit of an improvement to the perimeter garden bed outside the community centre today...thanks Yass Valley Men's shed members.
22.01.2022 Students enjoyed a great day learning about indigenous art and culture today. Lots of different activities including photography, podcast making, skating, designing and painting with ochre, and tasting bush tucker.

14.01.2022 BlazeAid Volunteers ‘Commonwealth Point of Light’ award - a big Thankyou to all of you for your kind words of congratulations. A radio presenter asked me on Fr...iday what this means to BlazeAid. I think we will continue to go forward with strength and conviction to help others to recover in times of rebuild after our natural disasters. I am hoping it will give impetus to two new projects I would like to promote and bring change to the way we prepare and respond to fires: The first is fixing the problem of up to $500,000,000 a year of hard earned charity monies going towards replacing people’s uninsured homes. For just two cups of coffee a week ($9 a week) , the 20-40% of rural and peri urban home owners who currently either ‘play the odds’ or deliberately or inadvertently decide NOT to insure their ‘castle’ could be shielded in a Compulsory Home Insurance net like we currently have with Fire levies through our Shire rates in Victoria and TAC fee in our car registration. The plan is now ‘shovel ready’ to go and has the support of every stakeholder who has read my plan ( Fed State and Local Govt politician plus the Insurance companies plus all others involved in Bushfire recovery) but it will be up to each State Govt to have their Local Govt to get it done. The Mayor of our Mitchell shire David Lowe is a great promoter of this- but I will need universal support of everyone hounding their State politicians. BlazeAid spearheaded the change in Backpacker legislation back in Feb last giving 2 Nd and 3rd year Visas to backpackers who volunteered with BlazeAid and we can do it again - freeing up to $500m yearly for more help to fire survivors to recover mentally and physically with their ( insurance paid for) homes being reconstructed out of Insurance companies money - not your donations! The other one is the launch of massed paddock tree planting with in blazeaid - being launched at the new Jingelic NSW camp in a few weeks. I have successfully paddock treed with 50 metre spacing much of my farm with special reused stakes and guards. But each tree will have a number and a longitude and latitude which will be logged in electronically on line in paddock by the planter! Our Database lady is setting it up I am starting trials on my farm this week with vols ( wearing masks under Worker Permit) I will be personally paying for the trees and guards. Text me on 0418530471 if you want info on either Thankyou! Kindest Regards Kevin and Rhonda See more
12.01.2022 This Saturday 12 September Yass Landcare Community Nursery volunteers will be sowing native seed for our fire affected partner who is located Bemboka. Yass Lan...dcare won a Michael King grant from Landcare Australia to progress this partnership over the next twelve months. This funding also allowed the Yass Landcare nursery to fund the temporary extension to our site which has been approved by YVC. If you are interested in learning how to sow Eucalypus, acacia and other understory plants please consider coming along to the two monthly sowing open days. They include the second Saturday of each month which is 12 September and the fourth Tuesday of each month which is 22 September from 9.30 to noon. We are located behind the Yass Men's Shed at 1428 Yass Valley Way.

02.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Dearly beloved and much missed chaps, As mentioned in last Monday’s Missive, all COVID checks have been monitored and we are good to go on Tuesday (8/9) from 9am to noon.... Of course, ALL PRECAUTIONS WILL CONTINUE TO APPLY and will be enforced: Frequent hand washing and use of our sanitizer (to be found all over the place); Social distancing both inside and outside the Shed (minimum 1.5m and no one inside your 4 square metre personal exclusion zone; and Masks are available if you need to or care to use them. Welcome back, this time HOPEFULLY for the indefinite future!! You will notice that the garden fairies have been active in your absence and our Memorial Garden to Shed Members who have passed away is now planted and mulched in the garden bed between Yass Valley Way and the Shed Carpark. It looks fantastic and has already beautified the area amazingly. If you are impressed, next time you see Allan McGrath, Roger Holgate, Allan Carey (Super-Hero), Peter Davidson, Mac McLean, Grant Johnston, John Pratten, Ross Stirton, Ian Bluett, Rod Perceval, Mike Poulton, Tony Warren, Richard Ball, Bruce Skillin and Chris Smith, give them all a big pat on the back! Even if you are not impressed, give them a big pat anyway! I hope to see you all very soon. Cheers Wayne Stuart YVMS Secretary 0419 292 022
