24.01.2022 |Snake bite awareness month | This month we are trying to raise awareness on "all things snake bites". These are always an Emergency situation and we need to see your pet straight away if you think it has been bitten.... Snakes and snake bites are a common occurrence in regional Australia, with Eastern Brown and Red-bellied Black snakes being the most common species responsible for bites in Yass and surrounds. If you think a snake has bitten your pet you should try to keep them as calm and quiet as possible and get them to the vet as quickly as possible The severity of the clinical signs can vary greatly and depends on the species of snake and the dose of venom delivered in the bite. Keep and eye over the coming month for information relating to snake bites.

22.01.2022 Ticks As the weather warms up and we get out and about more with our pets, it’s time to think about some irritating, and potentially life-threatening parasites (and how to avoid them!) We generally do not have paralysis ticks in our area. However, there have been reports in recent years of paralysis ticks being found on dogs in the ACT and surrounds. ... Paralysis ticks are found along the east coast of Australia. Paralysis tick intoxication can be life-threatening requiring extended intensive care, as the tick toxin progressively paralyses muscles. One of the first things noticed is a change in voice. Before their pet becomes uncoordinated and has difficulty breathing. Tick prevention in combination with daily tick searches is so important. The majority of ticks will attach around the head, neck and front legs area. They try to find places they won’t be knocked off like lip folds, under collars, in ears or between toes. If removed promptly, they have less time to inject fatal toxins into your pet. Occasionally we will see other ticks that may attach to your pets but these ticks are not usually associated with disease. These ticks can be killed by the same medication that kills paralysis ticks.
22.01.2022 | The Chronicles of the YVV team | "As a student vet in Sydney I had a knife pulled on me in consult as I started to discuss the costs involved with trying to save a puppy. The clients were clearly distressed about their puppy and acting inappropriately. It is very difficult as a vet to balance the need to fix and help every animal with the needs of the business". Some of the situations vets find themselves in can only be explained as unbelievable, from happy times with pupp...ies being born, to the worst of times with aggressive and abusive clients to helping animals that have been exposed to the most heinous of crimes. Dr Tamara has seen a lot in her 11 years as a Veterinarian, but she loves her job and is a crowd favorite here at YVV. 12.01.2022 ***WARNING: Please do not use Cholecalciferol rat bait*** Cholecalciferol rodenticide is a new rodenticide that is starting to be used across NSW in recent weeks due to the ongoing mouse plague. Cholecalciferol (trade names: Selontra, Rampage) causes severe electrolyte abnormalities within 8-36 hours of ingestion and may ultimately result in death. This rodenticide toxicity is incredibly difficult to treat, with many patients requiring over a week in hospital to stabilize. For this reason, we recommend that our clients do not utilize these products as a rodenticide during the mouse plague. If you think your dog may have had access to a cholecalciferol rodenticide, or would like to discuss other rodenticide options, please start an App chat or call the clinic on 6226 4444.

12.01.2022 Fleas Irritation from fleas is one of the most common cause for scratching in cats and dogs. It is caused by a reaction to flea saliva injected into the skin when fleas bite your pets. ... Did you know that only 5% of the flea’s life cycle is actually on your pets. Cats and dogs are also very good at grooming fleas out of their coat, but you may find flea dirt in the coat. Other signs include Biting Scratching Rubbing itchy areas You may notice hair loss and small bumps on the skin. The skin may become thickened over time, and the self trauma may result in superficial skin infections. Itching may be seen more in the warmer months but can be all year round indoors or in sheltered areas.

10.01.2022 We are talking horses.... Laminitis is a common, extremely painful, and frequently recurrent condition in horses, ponies and donkeys. This condition affects the tissues (laminae) bonding the hoof wall to pedal bone in the hoof. This can result in the pedal bone sinking or rotating within the hoof under the weight of the horse. In extreme cases this can result in penetration the sole of the foot by the pedal bone. There are three general situations that Laminitis can arise. ... - Diseases associated with inflammation e.g., Certain types of colic’s, diarrhoea, retained placenta and severe pneumonia. - Endocrine (hormone) disease e.g., Equine Cushing’s disease and equine metabolic syndrome. Horses with these underlying conditions are prone to developing laminitis due to eating lush green grass high in sugar that they are unable to process adequately. - Mechanical overload supporting limb laminitis e.g., associated with a fracture or infected joint in the other leg so that the leg which is bearing all of the weight is at risk of laminitis. The clinical signs of equine laminitis are: - Lameness affecting most commonly at least two limbs. - The horse leans back onto its heels to take the weight off the painful toe area. - The lameness is worse when the horse walks on hard ground or turns. - Shifting weight between feet when resting - Increased digital pulses. - Pain with use of hoof testers at the point of frog on the foot If you suspect your horse has laminitis, bring it in out of the paddock and rest them and call us at YVV on (02) 6226 4444 or (02) 6227 5955 for MB.
