03.01.2022 Introducing #BlackExcellence local Aboriginal Women and Men for #NaidocWeek Our Fifth #BlackExcellence is the inspiring Keifer Yu. My name is Keifer Yu I am a Yawuru man who grew up in Broome but then moved to Perth to continue my secondary education. During my later school years, I never really knew what I wanted to do career wise and I had this image that I was going to be in the AFL, unfortunately that was never meant to be. After I left school I started an apprenticeship ...in Carpentry and joined the Claremont Football Club. While playing football I experienced many set backs with injuries and home sickness. Not only was I unable to play footy at times it impacted on my ability to continue with my trade. I’m proud that I was able to work hard and reach my goals of playing 100 League games with the Claremont Football Club and receive my Carpentry qualification. I relocated to Broome in 2018 with my partner and shortly after we welcomed our daughter Macie. In my first year being home I needed a new challenge so I applied for the Indigenous Marathon Project. 12 Indigenous people from across Australia were selected and we ran the New York Marathon in 2019. It’s something I’m very proud of and would recommend to our mob. I currently work with the Department of Justice as a support worker working with disengaged youth. I get to work with young men and hope to be a good mentor to them. Advice I would give to my younger self is to set goals and be prepared to make mistakes and reassess your goals at any time in your journey. What an amazing journey you have had. What a great example of never give up, If one door closes open 2 more. You are a true inspiration to the community and the young men you mentor. You are making a difference.
