24.01.2022 The conditiong phase of Hamstring strains post-injury requires far more than just strengthening a muscle group or a single muscle action. Mulsces can either behave as force generators or energy absorbers. Muscles that cross one joint are given the term mono-articular, in that they cross one joint (I.e. gluteus maximus) and generate force. Muscles that cross 2 joints (I.e. hamstrings) are bi-articular and absorb energy. We know know that our fascia (connective tissue framewo...rk) may even provide tri or quad-articular function! So what relevance does this have for rehab? Any muscle that generates force (glutes) must be controlled, dampened or absorbed by bi-articular muscles (hamstrings) along the kinematic chain/fascial line. Therefore we need to activate muscles far above or below the hamstrings (in this case) to rehab injuries better! #hamstringworkout #hamstrings #sportsinjuries #sportsinjury #chiropractor #sportsmedicine #hamstringstretch #hamstringstrain #muscles #kinesiology #fascia #anatomy #fascialstretchtherapy #sportschiropractic

22.01.2022 IS IGNORANCE REALLY BLISS? The Dunning-Krueger effect scientifically explains what you probably always suspected but didn’t quite know how to label people believe they are smarter and more capable than what they really are. Those who score lowest in knowledge tests tend to dramatically overestimate how well they performed. In other words, incompetent people are not only poor performers, they are unable to recognize and assess the poor quality of their work! The less you ...know, the more right you think you are! The more informed, educated & experienced we become, we realize that there is no clear-cut, black & white solution, especially when it comes to the complex nature of body systems and their even more complicated interrelated processes. We are here to reassure you that our decisions are based on ever evolving and developing evidence informed knowledge and deep critical evaluation. Any appearance of ambiiguty in the sometimes drawn-out process of uncovering answers is necessary if you want to avoid a simplistic, foolish prognosis! #dunningkruger #ignoranceisnotbliss #functionalmedicine #integrativemedicine #knowledgeispower #chiropracticcare #thechirohub #brain #medicine #health #evidencebased #itscomplicated #neurology #laboratorytest #evolution See more

20.01.2022 The quote - "genetics loads the gun and environment pulls the trigger" is analogous to anatomy loading the gun and environment pulling the trigger. Manual therapy is NOT simply a panel beating approach to the desired soft tissue or anatomical parts. It is far more than that! In my experience, manual therapy is an evolving science that should involve many scientific branches including but not limited to: Dynamic systems/chaos theory Biotensegrity Laterality... Psychodynamics Embodied cognition/perception Functional neurology/neuroscience neuroplasticity and adaptive learning The above branches can be also be considered the internal and external environment, whereby your anatomy itself plays a very small role. #chiropractic #mentor #mentorship #educator #manualtherapy #sports #chiropractor #science #anatomy #functionaltraining #function #evolveordie #brain #movement #movementismedicine #exercisephysiology See more

16.01.2022 ADVANCING THROUGH FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE We are excited to now offer functional laboratory testing at The Chiro Hub! When there is chronic recurrence of musculoskeletal pain and underlying health conditions that are not alleviated by any form of manual therapy, it is imperative to consider the complex interactions between the nervous, immune, endocrine, cardiovascular and other regulatory systems of the body.... This is where functional laboratory tests that are precisely targeted through skilful practioner questioning, extensive examination and careful reasoning, are of great value. For our clients, it is reassuring to know that they have the opportunity to uncover the multiple drivers of their symptoms and/or pain and be guided more intentionally towards a resolution. 14.01.2022 MUSCLE CRAMPS| It doesn't always have to do with an electrolyte imbalance - i.e. magnesium deficiency! Physiology 101 states that there are two main types of neurotransmitters - excitatory & inhibitory. EXCITATORY neurotransmitters/modulators include Epinephrine, Norepinepherine, Dopamine, Glutamate & PEA. ... INHIBITORY neurotransmitters include GABA, Taurine & 5-HIAA. Mitochondrial dysregulation will ultimately affect regions of the brain that use inhibitory RATHER than Excitatory action! Mitochondrial dysregulation can result from: 1. Chronic pyschological & emotional stress 2. Overeating 3. Heavy metal toxicity 4. Chronic low grade infections & Intestinal dysbiosis 5. Oxidative stress/neuro-inflammation A major brain area which uses inhibitory Action (GABA) is the basal nuclei. Lack of GABAergic inhibitory function of the basal nuclei due to mitochondrial dysregulation, can lead to dystonic like symptoms including frequent involuntary muscle cramping and/or contractions on one side of the body. This may or may not be significant enough to cause an obvious mechanical deformity. What does this all mean? Recurrent muscle spasm etiology may be far more complex and involved than being given the simple label of text neck, recurrent joint sprain or neck instability. It may be due to a breakdown in central nervous system integration or software failure, and this may be compounded by sub-optimal biochemistry. #neurology #chiropractor #chiropractic #morethanwhatmeetstheeye #neuroscience #physiology #exercisephysiology #brainhealth #brainfunction #carrickinstitute #neurologicaldisorder #brain #clinicalneuroscience #health #medicine #functionalmedicine #biochemistry @ The Chiro Hub

10.01.2022 NEUROLOGY APPLICATIONS| When people hear the word neurology, the first thing that comes into their mind is a Neurologist. However, in a different context it may also be used as a treatment application rather than a diagnosis of a a suspected lesion or damage to an area of the brain or spinal cord. There is promising research that shows a combination of neuromodulator release from vagus nerve stimulation paired with a sensory experience (sound) enhances neuroplasticity.... Stimulating vagus nerve activates multiple neuromodulator networks in the brain. These include acetylcholine, Norepinepherine and serotonin. These neuromodulators are important in learning, memory and generating plasticity in the brain. Superimposed on this drill, involves cerebellar stimulation to help in adaptive learning. 07.01.2022 FATIGUE 101| If you are a fatigue sufferer, do you feel more fatigued or energised from a moderate - intense workout? Feeling a significant overall improvement in energy levels can be reflective of low THYROID function (hypothyroidism). On the contrary, feeling as if your energy levels are completely depleted from a bout of activity may warrant further testing for ADRENAL status. @thechirohub we can offer a full comprehensive test panel, including but not limited to... your 24 hormonal biochemistry levels and a complete workup of thyroid function! 03.01.2022 Hamstring rehab with integration of midline control. Muscle contraction lies within a continuum. We are all familiar with the 3 types of muscle contraction: 1. Isometric (muscle tension with zero length change) 2. Concentric (muscle shortening under load) 3. Eccentric (muscle lengthening under load)... However, a muscle can also remain isometric in one plane and undergo both alternating eccentric and concentric contractions in another plane. In this example, the biceps femoris remains in an isometric state in the sagittal plane and undergoes both shortening and lengthening n the rotational plane. Too often I see well-intentioned rogue trainers base their rationale for movement on the visual, aesthetic or what they see rather than considering the basic foundations and principles that may undermine learning and motor behaviour. #musclephysiology #muscle #physiotherapy #physiology #chiropractor #chiropractic #sportschiropractic #exercisephysiology #sportsmedicine #sports #lovewhatyoudo #personaltrainer #healthandfitness #musclecontraction #business #hamstrings #sportsinjury #rosebery #integrativemedicine #functionaltraining #functionalfitness #functional

02.01.2022 VITAMIN D & THE INFECTION CONNECTION| @thechirohub It has become routine practice to provide a very thorough investigative work up - inclusive of blood labs, questionairres (immune, metabolic, neurotransmitter), Functional lab testing, etc. There has been some concern regarding low vitamin D levels and immune system compromise, especially during the current times we are faced with.... You may have been advised by your health coach/professional to supplement on vitamin D in order to increase the responsiveness of your immune system. Even yet, your GP may recommend that you take vitamin D, based on a standard blood test. Lets all take this fact into account, low serum levels of Vitamin D reported on blood labs are seen in health individuals as well as those with chronic inflammatory conditions! This reporting of vitamin D is usually not in its active form! It is too ignorant to assume that low levels of inactive Vitamin D are linearly correlated to active levels of Vitamin D! As you can see from the first image, elevated active Vitamin D (yellow shade) levels are found in those with persistent intracellular infection, chronic inflammatory response syndrome and even those with Crohns disease! Seems counter-intuitive right? So what might be happening here? High levels of active vitamin D may result when downregulation of the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR is present within the nucleus of macrophages, which act as antigen-presenting cells) becomes "high jacked" by persistant bacterial or viral infections (image 2). The VDR is first neded to be activated by active vitamin D before any immune response is needed to address intracellular viral or bacterial activity. Furthermore, by supplementing on vitamin D, in the presence of low grade intracellular infection, you are continuing the spiral of down regulating the VDR and further suppressing immune function. In turn, this leads to incrased surplus of active vitamin D having no receptor to bind to, thereby driving more inflammation. As part of your investigative workup with your GP, we may provide further functional lab testing that will allow better outcomes for you! #functionalmedicine #covid_19 #vitamind

01.01.2022 I have noticed a handful of patients who have had silicone breast implants, present with complaints of unexplained fatigue, multiple joint pain as well as disturbances in memory recall. Silicone breast implants are associated in a proportion of patients with complaints such as fatigue, cognitive impairment, arthralgias, myalgias, pyrexia, dry eyes and dry mouth. Silicones can migrate from the implant through the body and can induce a chronic inflammatory process. Think twice ...before a Silicone breast implant! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28379860/

01.01.2022 WHAT IS PERCUSSION MYOTONIA?| Reflex tapping over the thenar musculature produces a temporary involuntary tonic perseveration of muscle contraction with slow relaxation. The end effect is an involuntary and sustained flexion and abduction of the thumb towards the palm. 2 major electrolyte imbalances can cause reflex myotonia... 1. Low blood calcium 2. High blood Potassium Calcium metabolism is under very strict regulation. It is required for cardiac, nerve and clotting functions. NB. What is interesting is that for years she has always noticed that she always seems to bruise easily. This requires further testing for cardiac ECG if low calcium is a major factor. Low blood calcium can be a result from hyperventilation, low albumin protein, low parathyroid function, Vitamin D deficiency and malabsorption syndromes. This gal also had a history of mutiple episodes of fainting. Hmm Previous blood work had been done which showed everything to be in "normal range". So what was our treatment strategy? Controlled slow breathing, VItamin D supplementation, increase protein intake and further address her Gastrointestinal system with advanced lab work. One thing to note is that poor vagal tone can be of consequence from functional Gastrointestinal issues (too many to list here). This was confirmed by autonomic nervous testing utilising our NERVE EXPRESS software. Low vagal function in the prescence of functional GIT issues potentially leading to low blood calcium can be a signal for the brainstem to initiate fainting, especially with excessive exercise and inadequate protein nutrition. #functionalmedicine #functionalneurology #neuroscience #health #wellness #chiropractic #chiropractor #exercisephysiology #physiotherapy #neurology #myotonia #neurological #functionaltraining #medicine #immunology #functionalfoods #functionalmedicinedoctor
