25.01.2022 * Researchers from the University of Cambridge reported their findings in the journal, PLOS ONE. The study, based on reports from more than 10,000 individuals, found that even moving around a little bit each day can have a positive effect on emotional well-being. "Physical activity, both exercise and non-exercise, has far-reaching benefits to physical health. Although exercise has also been linked to psychological health (e.g., happiness), little research has examined physica...l activity more broadly, taking into account non-exercise activity as well as exercise." Overall, this research suggests that not only exercise but also non-exercise physical activity is related to happiness. Health & Happiness - author Dr. Jason Rentfrow, from Cambridge’s Department of Psychology: "Our analyses also indicated that periods of physical activity led to increased positive mood, regardless of individuals’ baseline happiness. There have been many studies about the positive psychological effects of exercise, but what we’ve found is that in order to be happier, you don’t have to go out and run a marathon . . . all you’ve really got to do is periodically engage in slight physical activity throughout the day."

24.01.2022 In a published study from Cognitive Neuroscience, scientists examined connections between executive control and reward regions in the brain, and report that dieting success may be easier for some people because they have higher structural integrity in the white-matter pathway connecting the executive control and reward systems. Chronic dieters are known to show extreme reactions to food cues in executive control and reward areas of the brain, in addition to having depleted co...gnitive control and a greater tendency to over-reward themselves with high-calorie foods in real-life situations. These findings support their hypothesis that structural integrity connecting the two centres relates to individual differences in body fat and is an indication of dieting success. The authors of the study concluded, Individuals with reduced integrity may have difficulty in overriding rewarding temptations, leading to a greater chance of becoming obese than those with higher structural integrity. What we found is that in humans, the control of body weight is dependent largely on the areas of the brain involved in self-control and self-regulation. That area of the brain [prefrontal cortex] has the ability to take into account long-term information, such as the desire to be healthy, in order to control immediate desires.
