13.01.2022 Cloncurry, in outback Queensland, has always been a very special place for me, ever since I first went there as a young teenager with my older brother, to visit... my relatives who owned and ran a sheep and cattle station not too far from town. That's where I first learned about the lifestyle that's so important to those who live in these outback communities, and how much our outback heritage plays a part in who we are as Australians. That’s why it was great to catch up again with Cloncurry Shire Council Mayor Greg Campbell earlier this week to check in on how things are going up his way. It’s over 18 months since Cloncurry, Julia Creek and the wider region in Queensland suffered the devastating floods after years of drought, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands head of cattle and livestock. I was incredibly pleased to hear from Greg things are looking up and they’re hopeful for a ‘green’ Christmas. Cloncurry is also the final resting place of my great, great Aunt Dame Mary Gilmore, who features on our Australian $10 notes. She was a trailblazing Australian, known and celebrated for her writing and poetry. During one of my visits up there last year, I went to the Cloncurry Cemetery where her ashes are interred with her husband William to pay my respects. During my chat with Greg, we talked about the ‘Spirit of the Outback’ poetry competition they’re setting up to commemorate what would have been Dame Mary’s 155th birthday this year. Greg wrote to me a few weeks ago asking me to nominate someone for the judging panel. I could think of no one better than my cousin Gillian, Dame Mary’s great grand-daughter so I contacted her and she’s delighted to be involved. Details of the competition are still being finalised - I’ll post more on my social media in the coming weeks but in the meantime for all our poets out there, get your thinking caps on and start penning your entries. The competition is about celebrating everything that’s great about Australia and capturing the real spirit and resilience of our outback and it’s amazing people. Stand by for more details.

13.01.2022 EAR MARKING OPTIONAL A new proposal is asking whether livestock owners should be forced to tag and brand their animals. The Department of Primary Industrie...s is proposing that earmarking and branding no longer be mandatory, but is asking pastoralists for their thoughts. Department spokesman Brad McKormack says it's important everyone has their say. "The department's received informal and formal feedback from livestock owners about the necessity for earmarking and branding their stock, and we feel that the best way to gauge that the proposal has support is to put it out to a consultative process." "The department will continue to run the brand's register and will continue to allot unique identifiers to owners of livestock. "We're not suggesting for a moment that people stop it, it would just be suggesting people could have a choice." Would you like to have a choice?

09.01.2022 "I remember walking into the bathroom by myself for the first time in months and being confronted with a chest full of scars, I had no nipples and I looked a lo...t different to what I thought and I just broke down, it was a bad thing at the time. A couple of months earlier, we had been working our guts out mustering bullocks and I had some mates coming to visit from down south. My ute had been playing up and I had been trying to fix it when I got myself covered in oil. Not thinking too much about it, I caught up with the boys and camped at the yards. I had my drizabone vest zipped up and I drifted off to sleep in the arm chair, too close to the fire I know it was my fault. I woke up after an ember had landed on me as my shirt caught fire. I frantically tried to rip the vest off, I was yelling out to my mates and rolling around on the ground trying to put myself out. I remember looking down at my arms on the verge of giving up as I could see the skin coming off. I knew I had to give it one more crack as one of my mates woke up and tackled me to the ground, I didn't have much of my shirt or vest left. I was flown to Brissie Hospital by the royal flying doctors with third degree burns to 48% of my body, they put me into a coma where I stayed for 4 weeks as they had to take 3 lots of donor skin from my legs to cover the rest of my body. My Boss Fred Appleton from Appleton Cattle Co where I was working, found out late that night and he flew straight to Brisbane to be by my side until my family could get there from Victoria. He treated me like his family. They told me it would be an 18 month to 2 year recovery and that I better set some goals for what life might be like. My first goal - I wanted to get back to work, my second goal - I wanted to fly choppers. I didn't enjoy being in the city, I met some nice people while I was in hospital, a cane farmer from FNQ who would be the nicest person I've ever met. I love cattle and I love the bush and that's what I wanted to do. I worked hard at my physio and I made it back to work in about 6 months I ticked that box. One day I was chatting with my boss and as a pilot himself he encouraged me to "Go chase your dreams". I got my licence, I got back to work and I still managed to do everything that the others at work could do. It's given me the chance where I can spend my mornings mustering, working in the yards in the arvo and flying myself home in the evening. It taught me a number of things; It taught me that good people don't care what you look like so there's no point worrying about it. It taught me that sometimes you just need to keep moving forward. I want people to know that you can face these challenges and you can come out the otherside and go back to doing the things you love." #HumansofAgriculture Ricky
