25.01.2022 Its' beach clean up time!

25.01.2022 This amazing little wedge pea is brand new to science, and was discovered last month by Queensland Herbarium researchers on Yuku Baja Muliku country at Archer Point. Yuku Baja Muliku rangers maintain relationships and collaborate with scientific and natural resource institutions to improve our knowledge of conservation values on country. This knowledge allows us to refine our management strategies to permit persistence of these important values. #yukubajamuliku #ourlandourpeopleourfuture #science #environment #wedgepea #queenslandherbarium #landmanagement #ecology #botany

23.01.2022 This pretty little sand monitor (Varanus gouldii) is a very lucky reptile, after the Yuku Baja Rangers picked him up swimming out to sea off Archer Point. While it might seem bizarre, he was displaying typical dispersal behaviour, seeking out a new area to colonise. Given the distance from land and the lizard's exhaustion, rangers decided to return him safely to the shore to plan for his next adventure. #yukubajamuliku #ourlandourpeopleourfuture #rangers #conservation #herpetology #herpetologist #reptiles #lizardgram #lizardsofinstagram #sandmonitor #capeyork #cooktowntnq #nature

22.01.2022 Its @QldSeniorsWeek this week - a time to celebrate, thank and recognise the important Elders who help shape our lives and communities. Do you have an Elder in your life? Make sure you let them know they are appreciated, not just this week, but every week! #elderappreciation #seniorsweek #cotaqld #QSW20 #YukuBajaMuliku

22.01.2022 In This Together I couldnt think of a better theme for 2020 Reconciliation Week, this year has already been hard for many people. This year and moving forward all Australians are In This Together. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, good and bad. To learn about our diverse cultures. To learn and share our many achievements. All of us have a role to play within our communities to build relationships and move ...forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures. #NRW2020 #InThisTogether2020

21.01.2022 Happy Monday ! Remember to take a break, admire the view, get out from behind the computer and contemplate why you do what you're doing and how you can best tackle your week to achieve what you want while maintaining a healthy work life balance. 21.01.2022 During NAIDOC week 2018 Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch jointly announced with WWF-Australia a grant to establish and support a Womens Land and Sea Ranger network in Queensland. Yuku Baja Muliku Landowners and Reserves were the successful recipients of this grant and are now partnered with the Queensland Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger (QILSR) Program and WWF to deliver the project over two years. The project has been established to directly address recommendations put... forward at the 2018 Land and Sea Ranger workshop which included: the establishment of a womens ranger network increased number of womens ranger workshops ongoing support including training and mentoring Currently we have held 3 QLD Indigenous Women Ranger forums, with 50 ladies attending each forum. I have been trying to find out how many QLD Indigenous Women Rangers we have across the different programs, departments, organisations etc for the QLD Indigenous Womens Ranger Network. We have been lucky enough to capture some data and contact details, however I feel there are still some major gaps. If you need to update your details with us, or know of QLD Indigenous Women Rangers that may not be on our list, could you please pass on my contact details or email me with their relevant contacts. Any and all help is appreciated. Cheers Larissa [email protected]

20.01.2022 Ever wondered what our rangers do? Short answer: too much to include in this post! We don't just pose artistically on mangroves at the beach , just a few of the other jobs we undertake are: managing feral plants and animals , monitoring environmental indicators , plant and animal populations , registering and preserving cultural heritage sites , rehabilitating damaged areas, training, and lots of hard work on the ground, such as fencing, weeding, watering, spraying and rubbish collection. #adayinthelife #rangers #landmanagement #indigenousrangers #landandsearangers #ILSR #yukubajamuliku #ourlandourpeopleourfuture #countryneedspeople

19.01.2022 The Yuku Baja Rangers were privileged to interact with a pod of false killer whales while conducting marine patrols off the Archer Point coast this week. These playful dolphins grow up to 6m in length and can live for up to 60 years. They are very social and have even been known to bring fish to passing boats, and enjoy playing with other dolphin species, such as bottlenose. #dolphin #falsekillerwhale #yukubajamuliku #archerpoint #cooktowntnq #capeyork #ourlandourpeopleourfuture #conservation #environment #greatbarrierreef #countryneedspeople #seacountry #ocean #rangers #ILSR #indigenousrangers #landandsearangers

19.01.2022 Thank you for respecting the temporary camping closure of First and Second beaches at Archer Point - our rangers have started rehabilitation, including coconut palm removal. Remember you can still camp, but only in the designated area. Visit our website for details: http://ow.ly/9w5N50C0oqc

19.01.2022 The Yuku Baja Rangers are celebrating National NAIDOC Week this week - a chance to recognise and salute the strong, ancient culture that forms an integral part of our history and continues to shape the story of Australia. 18.01.2022 The Yuku Baja Muliku Cultural Heritage Team have been working with our rangers to record sites, images and documents of cultural significance, such as story places, sacred sites, scar trees, historical documents and photos and shell middens which are recorded and entered into a database. Since June 2012, numerous sites, documents and images have been entered into the database with more to be added in the future. #culture #history #preservation #culturalheritage #heritage #ourlandourpeopleourfuture #yukubajamuliku #cooktowntnq

18.01.2022 FOCUS ON FAUNA You might be forgiven for thinking bats are just a source of disease or a food that we'd rather wasn't on the menu in Wuhan. However, there is so much more to know about bats - did you know we have a healthy population of spectacled flying foxes helping to pollinate native trees on Yuku Baja country? Get your geek on with ABC Science http://ow.ly/3yr650CjlcE to find out more about these furry flying phenomenons! 14.01.2022 FOCUS ON FAUNA You'd be forgiven for thinking this little lady is a tiny snake, but take a closer look and you can see the ear openings, broad tongue and vestigial limbs which mark her as a legless lizard. The Excitable Delma (Delma tincta) gets its name from its distinctive jumpy defense mechanism and is rarely spotted as it is nocturnal. While this one is a juvenile, adult Delmas can reach over 30cm in length. #yukubajamuliku #archerpoint #annanriver #wildlife #ILSR #rangers #indigenousrangers #fauna #australiananimals #nativeanimals #lizard #leglesslizard #delmatincta #countryneedspeople #conservation #landmanagement #environment

14.01.2022 Seagrass health is an important parameter for overall marine health, and paints a picture of our sea country environment. 13.01.2022 Frilled to meet you! While this handsome frillneck lizard wasn't so keen on having his photo taken, our rangers were thrilled to see him, and include his details in their flora and fauna survey. Collecting plant and animal data on Yuku Baja country is part of the ranger's regular duties, and the information collected is used by our rangers and State Government to make informed choices for future management of the area. #archerpoint #ourlandourpeopleourfuture #yukubajamuliku #citizenscientists #science #datacollection #rangers #ILSR #indigenousrangers #caringforcountry #environment #conservation #floraandfauna #herpetologist #frillnecklizard #lizard #cooktowntnq #capeyork

02.01.2022 We are fortunate to live in a beautiful and safe part of the world that allows our rangers to conserve country and pass on their knowledge to the next generation without fear.
