25.01.2022 Naturally the Wasp talk is off next week....but on the eastern wall the old lady is getting new livery - painting the new downpipes, eaves, pipework, wall vents (one to go), window frames (one to go). I am not sure if my fear of heights has improved or not!

25.01.2022 The painting continues...I have never been a great fan of the dark brown on the south side of the building. Time for an update. So far cable ducts and half the door (right side!) done. To do - left side of door, walls, verandah posts, eaves, etc. Should keep me off the streets.

24.01.2022 Interesting times. I spend the daylight hours putting paint ON the external woodwork, gutters, etc and the night-time taking paint OFF the internal wall tiles - one tile at a time, with a razor blade. Lucky I have lots of time at home coz theres lots more to do. Before and during shots...

24.01.2022 Next event: The Yea River Catchment Landcare Group is presenting a light supper and a talk - Wasps. Not everyones cup of tea but as major pollinators, pest removers and devoted parents theyve got something going for them.

24.01.2022 One of the first posts on this Facebook page described the replacing of all the halogen downlights in the YBF with LEDs. As a step in the plan to make the YBF totally solar, today we received the first shipment of LED tubes (to replace the 60+ fluoros) and LED Edison bulbs (to replace the 13 high pressure mercury vapour highbay lights). Now the lights in Yea wont dim when we switch on the lighting in the back room!

23.01.2022 A big thank you to everyone who shared a laugh, a cry, a story, a text or an email. Kate would have been stunned by the response and truly humbled. She was well loved. Ron

23.01.2022 Good things happen in threes as well. 1- Let there be warmth. Late Friday afternoon Rhys from Toulson Electrics connected electrons to our split system. For the first time we are warm here. Mac doesnt want to leave the room!

23.01.2022 Quiet please - grout-removing artisan at work in the setting sun

20.01.2022 This is a long shot but......in the upstairs production area (the new apartment) the wall tiles on the bottom layer are coved (curved) where they meet the gutter (see photo). Most of these coved tiles are broken and attempts to source them have proved futile. Does anyone know where they could be custom-made? I need 35 tiles for the east wall (mandatory) and 80 tiles for the south wall (optional, but really nice to have). Renos have halted until I sort this out.

19.01.2022 In a break from de-grouting floor tiles we have started removing the plaster walls in the gallery room downstairs This has revealed the original tiled walls (painted), some crazy painting patterns and a new doorway. Stripping back the paint from the tiles now goes on the to do list.

19.01.2022 Good things happen in threes as well. 3. Let there be plants. The garden makeover has started. Thanks to the Yea River Landcare Group, Strath Creek Landcare Group and Intrepid Landcare Tribe for all the help and Jo Miller for the yummy food. Thanks also to Bec Bowles, Cath Olive and the Euroa Arboretum for the plants and advice.

18.01.2022 Meanwhile in the Green Room preparations are underway for tomorrows installation of a wonderous thing ... HEATING!

18.01.2022 Not that I am counting but the number of empty nail boxes tells me that we have just hand-nailed over 7000 nails to secure the boards on the floor. Now we eagerly await Darren the Tiler who next week will start re-laying the tiles in our apartment. Thanks to Heidi who contributed with an afternoon of banging...great stress relief!

18.01.2022 On the 28th of November 2019 the Yea Butter Factory became the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) rainfall recording site for Yea. Rainfall measurements have been continuously recorded in Yea manually since 1885 (oh, the responsibility!). The YBF building at the moment looks like a bomb-site. Now the whole property is a BOM-site. Pictured are of setting up the station and Mac guarding the data. The BOM data page for Yea is here: http://bit.ly/2QWKNlw

18.01.2022 Behold the heat-creation device. Thanks to Jack & Aaron from A&S Refrigeration & Airconditioning for the installation. Now all we need is some electrons to drive it.

18.01.2022 The cascade flowing down the driveway and the two fountains in the back yard were NOT part of our new garden design. After a bit of digging the culprit, a split connector in the water mains line, was found. Enter Greg Clements who soon had the problem fixed. Thanks to those who texted us and GVW to raise the alarm.

17.01.2022 With the new LED Edison bulbs now installed in the Highbay fixtures it is hard to believe the power (wattage) of ALL the new bulbs COMBINED is less than one of the old metal halide lamps, and it seems so much brighter.

17.01.2022 During the Second World War the turret of the BF was used as an aircraft observation post and manned 24/7 by the women of the town. In the current crisis the building is housing a mask-making operation.

16.01.2022 It is with profound sadness I have to tell you that Kate passed away on Sunday afternoon. The end was sudden and unexpected but for the first time in a long while Kate is pain free and at peace. She is sorely missed...particularly by Mac. There is now a new bright star in the firmament. Details of a memorial service will be released shortly. Kate has requested that if you are inclined to send flowers instead please donate to the Peter Macallum Foundation via this link (and me...ntion her name - Kate Hawkins). Donations will then be directed to ovarian cancer research. https://foundation.petermac.org/give/memory/donate

16.01.2022 Good things happen in three as well. 2 - Let there be light. Last week the triple glazed window was installed in the re-opened loading bay entrance. Before and after shots below...

16.01.2022 Further on the topic of bees...the occurrence of hundreds of Blue-banded Bees in the walls of the YBF over summer is well documented. With winter over the remaining wood-pile has been renovated (hopefully) into another bee hotel - now open for business.

16.01.2022 When loading a skip one needs all the help you can get...NOT!

16.01.2022 "I am love, I came here to give love" Kate Hawkins 2019 What do I say? What do I do? Time doesnt stand still when someone takes their last breath. I feel like ...it should. But the world keeps spinning and it is business as usual. Yesterday I said goodbye to this wonderful woman for the last time. Even after a 3 year battle with cancer this last week has come as a shock to all involved, including her medical team. She fought hard all the way through and never let negative thoughts or opinions rule her. She was determined to win by healing every part of herself. Kate decided to embark on a path of self discovery in the search of the her own truth instead of blaming the world. She confronted everything. Her openness to new things, her willingness to learn and change, her strength and vulnerability were beautiful to watch and very inspiring. I love you Kate and will be ever grateful for the sanctuary you created for me and the unending love and support you gave. I will always cherish our friendship. And whilst Im sad it came sooner than expected, I know well see you in the next life. Kate passed away gracefully in the arms of her beloved Ron, surrounded by people who love her Sunday 29/9/19. Thank you to everyone who sent their prayers and well wishes. Kate and Ron were both overwhelmed with the amount of love surrounding them. Please respect Rons space as he mourns. There are no plans of a memorial at this stage.

16.01.2022 Heres the bumper bulk food order by the Yealians this time around. Now it just needs to be sorted!

14.01.2022 Plant it and it will flower. The first flowers from last months Landcare planting - Purple Coral-pea (Hardenbergia violacea)

14.01.2022 By the look of the containers it seems the good people of Yea bought big on icecream and yoghurt at the Spring 2020 bulkfood buy. But delicious things hide therein. Chocolate coated pumpkin seeds anyone? You have to get past the savage guard dog first!

13.01.2022 A long way from home and now flowering at the Butter Factory (whilst we are STILL de-grouting floor tiles) - Flinders Range Wattle (Acacia iteaphylla)

13.01.2022 I hope that Ron gets to work on the heating soon!

13.01.2022 Weather trivia from the B.O.M.@YBF - So far this year in Yea it has rained on the 20th of every month....believe it or not

12.01.2022 A gathering to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Kate Hawkins will be held on Saturday, 19 October at 11am, at the Yea Butter Factory, 13 Rattray Street, Yea, Victoria. During the event there will be an opportunity for those wish to remember Kate to speak. A light lunch will follow. Please no gifts, flowers or cards. Kate has requested that if you are inclined, please donate to the Peter Macallum Foundation via the link below and proceeds will be directed according ...to Kates wishes. https://foundation.petermac.org/give/memory/donate An indication of your attendance would help with the event organising by replying to this post or SMS 0419559368.

12.01.2022 To all the Yea bulk foodies, the bulk food store is open again. The only difference to the instructions below is that you only need to provide your individual containers to the Butter Factory after I have picked up the bulk order from Seymour (Ill let you know when). Remember to put Yea pod as the ordering group. Happy shopping.

11.01.2022 In preparation for our upcoming Landcare planting, Terry Hubbard ripped a few lines in the dirt around the property. In retrospect laying out lines of bird seed and letting the cockies go for it would have had the same effect.

11.01.2022 The back corner of the YBF site has a large patch of remnant Wallaby Grass. The vision is to create a native wildflower meadow in it with plants grown from local seed. The first two flowers have bloomed and the native bees are luvin' it.

08.01.2022 When one is having coffee looking out of the new picture window it is amazing what one sees playing in the backyard - a Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus) and a Common Blackbird (Turdus merula). Which reminds me, I need to mow the grass again.

08.01.2022 Meanwhile on the flagpole atop the Butter Factory the cockatoos sneakily shredded the cabling of the newly installed weather station, rendering the expensive unit less useful than a plastic lunch-box.

07.01.2022 Scenes without scaffolds #2 - the gallery/ballroom/cinema/whatever its going to be. The curved corrugated iron ceilings are back in place. Beautiful! (before & after)

05.01.2022 The first meeting of the Butter Factory Arts Space (for want of a better name) - its cool on the ground floor!. Heidi Stewart and Annie Mannion (Nice shop) hard at work planning their next creative extravaganza.

05.01.2022 During the Second World War the 'turret' of the BF was used as an aircraft observation post and manned 24/7 by the women of the town. In the current crisis the building is housing a mask-making operation.

05.01.2022 Isn't Ebay a wonderful thing - an original shares certificate from the Yea Dairy Company Limited. I now own 0.08% of the Company. Some famous surnames on this piece of paper!

04.01.2022 With all this rain in the native garden the Austrostipa nodosa 'lawn' is coming on a treat whilst in the feral garden the weeds are putting on a colourful display.

03.01.2022 Welcome back. This juvenile Blue-faced Honeyeater turned up at the Butter Factory last week. According to the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas this bird, normally found west of the Strathbogies was last seen in Yea in 2008. The facial skin turns blue at 16 months. Full story http://bit.ly/37BjHFF

03.01.2022 Last year the discovery of large populations of native Blue-banded Bees tunneling into the lime mortar of the Butter Factory prompted us to rename the building the Blue-banded B&B. This summer we have eagerly awaited their return and on 1st January they did. I now have hours of viewing pleasure. For the full story http://bit.ly/2N9RWvV

01.01.2022 A year ago today three Landcare groups (Strath Creek, Yea River Catchment & Upper Goulburn Intrepid) converged for a mega planting at the Yea Butter Factory and the results are looking good. Happy times!
