22.01.2022 Please remember this, Yappers, next time someone talks to you of "dominance "

20.01.2022 This is such good advice Yappers!

20.01.2022 Socializing puppies is more than just meeting people and dogs...and this is especially relevant during this time of social distancing. Though our exposure to so...me stimuli is now limited, there’s so much we can do. Yes it is helpful to have your puppy interact with people and other dogs, but there are other things you can do to support your puppy’s emotional well-being as they develop. Your puppy is building neural pathways with each life experience during their early stages of life. You can create situations to help develop these neural pathways even when your puppy cannot meet other dogs and new people in the same way you might have before Covid. Here are some tips on how to continue socialization during this unusual time: USING AUDIO AND VIDEO STIMULI There are many videos on the internet that replicate the same sounds that your puppy may experience outside. Examples include construction noise, traffic, skateboard sounds, and sounds of kids playing. Our goal is to expose our pups to these noises so that they are no big deal. Start off by playing these sounds at a level that is barely audible, and day by day if your pup shows no reaction to the sounds, increase the volume. The key here is to watch your puppy’s body language. Your pup’s signals of unease can be subtle and easy to miss. While you’re looking for a loose, wiggly, and enthusiastic puppy, if you’re unsure we can help you identify signs of stress. During the socialization window, exposure isn’t what matters it’s your pup’s emotional reaction to new things that matters. WEIRD MOVEMENT? NO PROBLEM On top of strange noises, we can expect that pups will have to tolerate all kinds of stimuli coming towards them unexpectedly over the course of their lives. While you can’t bike or skateboard through your apartment, you do have a broom, a blow dryer, and a vacuum. After your pup shows no reaction to the sounds of these items, you can start working on desensitizing them to movement. Remember to start at a low level and to work your way up. It is better to go slow here than to move too fast and risk your pup developing a negative reaction. TOLERANCE TO SUDDEN ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE (SEC) We want to be sure your puppy is comfortable with changes in their environment. Now that the environment is somewhat constricted, we have to be creative in making sure your puppy is exposed to changes so he or she will not be overwhelmed when changes happen in real life. Move items in your house when your puppy isn’t looking. Use what you have around the house to create obstacle courses. We then encourage your puppy to explore this new environment while ensuring the process is fun! Together, we can find ways to disrupt your environment so that change is a normal part of your puppy’s life. ALL SURFACES ARE SAFE We want to be sure your puppy is exposed to a variety of walking surfaces to prevent phobias from developing to different floor substrates. We can do this at home by setting up an obstacle course that includes things like stairs and mimics different surfaces your puppy will encounter out in the world. Your pup should feel comfortable walking on carpet, wood, tile, linoleum, cement, and grates. FROM EARS TO TAILS, EYES TO NAILS We want to be sure your puppy is comfortable with all kinds of touch, from being picked up to having their nails clipped. We can practice this at home through conditioning and desensitization. We have plenty of time and now is the time to ensure our pups are totally comfortable with being pet, having their paws held, ears swabbed, eyes opened, teeth checked, and feeling gentle pokes with the eraser end of a pencil (to mimic injections). Thank you AbiK9 Dog Training for creating the infographic!

19.01.2022 Yeppoon Yappers is a dog training and social group for those who want to socialise and train their dogs in a friendly, flexible group setting. We offer a 5-week basic course which focuses on the How's & Why's of dog behaviour and learning, and the techniques required to develop a relationship with your dog. We use scientifically proven reinforcement to show you how to develop whatever behaviors you want to enjoy with your best fur-friend, be it simple good manners or winni...ng competitions. And along the way we socialise, do beach walks, find play dates and develop happy, confident dogs. We also offer specialised workshops from time to time focusing on topics like 'Clicker' 'Recallers' 'Intro to Jumpers /Rally' etc. Cost is $80 for 5 weeks. This includes a handout, plus it's a $2 coin donation for each session for our grounds. Wednesday classes at 6.30pm and the Saturday classes at 9am. We train on the PCYC grounds, 170 Matthew Flinders Drive in Yeppoon (near the Men's Shed) There is a covid compliant sign in sheet that needs completing each week. There is sanitiser or byo. Hand washing facilities with soap but need to byo hand towel. Please bring your dog on an ordinary flat collar and leash (NO chains will be accepted) and a dog bed or mat for training. Bring along lots of tasty, soft treats (ie "chunkers", bbq sausage or hot dog, cooked chicken or liver, etc) cut into small pieces, and "poo bags" for your dog. For yourself, comfortable clothes you can sit on the ground in, closed in shoes, sun protection and water. Children must have an adult present to assist with the training. Puppies must have had all their vaccinations to start training. For younger puppies we highly recommend the Petstock puppy classes. This is a great basis before final vaccinations are done and coming to our classes and it allows your young pups to socialise and meet other dogs and how to be on a lead, so they are ready to start learning when they come to Yappers and you get the full benefit of our course. Please message us on FB or call 0438 311669 for intake dates & times. We also do Private sessions for one on one help and training. Shirts and caps can be ordered from https://shop.spreadshirt.com.au/100085239/yeppoon+yappers

16.01.2022 I remember in Junior High School, I somehow became the target of a group of mean girls. They said they were going to beat me up after school (except they used s...ome choice language that back then I wasn’t allowed to use). And listen I am a CHICKEN. So I did what any sane person with decent survival skills does. I had my Mom pick me up from school early. Yepavoidance at its best. But I distinctly remember my Mom, in her efforts to console me, saying those girls and their behaviorthat was about them, not about me. She said it was sad they were so unhappy, and she tried to convince me their bullying was a sign they actually felt threatened. I can’t say I believed her - I sure as heck was not about to feel compassion for those girls - but now that I’m older I can see the wisdom in her words. The truth is Behaviorit’s NEVER personal. With humans (I know this is hard to believe, but it’s true) and with dogs. Check it out If your dog misbehaves If your dog checks out If you can’t get their attention If there are times where it seems like they have selective hearing Or they think the entire world is better than you Even if they bark, snap, bite, or are reactive It’s never personal. In fact, your dog’s behavior (all of it!) is a product of (1) Past Reinforcement History (What they expect to happen - good or bad - based on past experiences) (2) The Environment (What’s going on around them in that moment) (3) Their DNA (Herders herd, retrievers retrieve, pointers point you get the idea) And check it out None of those things are about you. I mean, you play a roll in the reinforcement history piece But none of those things are personal. None of those things are your dog giving you the paw None of those things mean your dog doesn’t respect you None of those things mean you are a bad dog owner Or your dog hates you. So as hard as it may feel at times Push that pesky ego aside, and approach your dog’s behavior with curiosity and compassion. You’ll be more effective in your training if you do. (The same goes for humans too).

16.01.2022 Congratulating our graduating class, showing off some great tricks! Well done all!

07.01.2022 *** Myth Buster Monday *** Todays myth. "Do not comfort a fearful dog. By comforting a fearful dog you teach them to be under confident." This one is another re...ally common myth that we see alot on social media. Don't even get me started on what I think about using social media as a source of information. That topic is for another day! So here is the geeky fact. You can reinforce and strengthen behaviour. You cannot reinforce an emotional response. You can alter an emotional response with pairing a trigger with reinforcement but you are not reinforcing the underlying emotion. Look at it a different way. Lets put this in human terms. You and I are sitting outside having coffee. A huge spider (you know the kind with the chunky abdomen and super long hairy legs) runs across your back and over your shoulder. You are terrified so I flick it off you. You are happy its off you but your heart is racing. I try to be a good friend and comfort you. It makes you feel better. We all like having someone in our corner. You are concerned because we don't know where the spider is. Because you are scared I suggest we go inside. We do. I check you over carefully and confirm the spider definately is not on you. "No it's not in your hair." You feel reassured. I was a good friend. I didn't laugh or get my phone out to film it for funniest home videos. I didn't chastise you - "It's just a spider. Harden up!!". Because that doesn't help. But it does teach distrust and it says loud and clear that I do not have your back. The people I trust are supportive, kind and make me feel safe. Our dogs deserve that too. The thing is, my reassurance didn't make you feel more scared. It didn't remove your fear but it did aid your recovery and it did give you that feeling of having someone to trust. Any choice we make that helps our animal feel safe builds confidence in their relationship with us. Be a good friend in times of stress. Show your pet you are in their corner - even when it doesn"t seem to make sense. Fear can be overcome. It can be overcome faster with a trustworthy companion. You will not teach your dog to be fearful by providing comfort when they are scared. #dogsolutions #mythbuster #dogs #behaviour #fearcantbereinforced #friendshelpfriends #trust

06.01.2022 Saturday Seminars time Yappers! Naomi from Shaw Paws Fitness will present "Tricks for Fitness" - a fun and effective way to build relationships, engage your dog's "learning brain" through games and increase your dog's fitness at the same time (and learn some pretty cool tricks, too!) Cost is $60.00 per head and start time is 9.00am next Saturday. Limited numbers so please book in now.

06.01.2022 Please don't make your dog get touched by strangers Yappers - especially small children! You might be actually teaching them to really dislike kids! And don't expect you or your children should pat other people's dogs - respect space!

06.01.2022 With storm season on the way, this is valuable information, Yappers!

01.01.2022 We're postponing again Yappers! Please keep safe, and remember that those settling exercises! Comforting, praising and giving treats to storm phobic dogs is NOT going to make them more fearful - it is going to help them cope - so break out the snacks & watch TV together!

01.01.2022 We're coming into a heat wave over the next two weeks, please look after your dogs and only walk them in cool temperatures (early morning, later afternoon). Make sure they have plenty of water and shade during the day too!

01.01.2022 This happened at home last night, Yappers! Those "settling exercises" really paid off
