25.01.2022 The best thing about my car: Dual controls. But this is still a funny column. https://www.theage.com.au//when-teaching-your-teen-to-driv

24.01.2022 Good news for learner drivers in the western suburbs: VicRoads is opening a new licence testing centre in Deer Park in February. The address is 1/85 Mt Derrimut Rd, which is about 10 minutes drive from Sunshine. It will be a welcome addition after VicRoads ceased doing driver testing at Sunshine a few years ago. Other nearby licence testing centres are at Carlton and Werribee.... The Deer Park LTC will have the capacity to provide more than 70 driver tests a day between 8.30am and 4.30pm. Appointments will be available on the VicRoads website soon, which will hopefully shorten wait times at Werribee!

24.01.2022 Excellent move in the works: all holders of overseas licences, including from NZ, as well as holders of interstate licences, will be required to convert to a Victorian licence within six months of taking up residence in Victoria. Drivers who do not convert their licence will lose their authorisation to drive with their interstate or overseas licence. They will be an unlicensed driver. Law change to be announced soon.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Beatrice, a flawless run on her driver test at Werribee today.

20.01.2022 In an October 2019 change to Victorias road rules, drivers approaching a pedestrian crossing must now give way to any pedestrian not only "on" the crossing, but also anyone entering the crossing. That requires drivers to be very aware of pedestrians nearing the crossing with the clear intention of stepping on to it. Theyre not hard to spot! The existing rule also requires that drivers approaching a pedestrian crossing must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary, stop safely before the crossing.

19.01.2022 Learner drivers beware: Among a bunch of amended Victorian driving law regulations introduced last month is an additional penalty for learner drivers who fail to display their L-plates. On top of the already existing $165 fine theyll also now receive one demerit point. And its not just the learner whos in hot water: a supervising driver who sits beside a learner driver and allows them to drive without displaying their L-plates will themselves cop a $165 fine.... A holder of a learner permit who is caught by police behind the wheel without a supervising driver beside them will be fined $826 and receive three demerit points. For P-platers, the penalty for failing to display P-plates is a $165 fine and three demerit points. And remember, drivers on their Ls or Ps who accumulate more than five demerit points in a 12-month period will have their licence or permit suspended.

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Annie Umseher who passed her VicRoads driving test at Werribee today. Excellent work Annie!

17.01.2022 She dodged jail, but she still killed a man. What does it take to make drivers realise texting while driving is so incredibly dangerous? https://www.theage.com.au//young-driver-who-killed-cyclist

17.01.2022 Will a $1000 fine deter more drivers from picking up their phones? Queensland will soon find out. (Reposted with new link ... Queensland government killed off the media release!) https://www.caradvice.com.au/811174/qld-phone-fines/

15.01.2022 This story in Saturdays Geelong Advertiser indicates the enormity of the task VicRoads faces in processing all the 55,000 drive tests that were booked, then cancelled, from March 25 because of the COVID crisis. So far, VicRoads is not opening up drive tests for anyone other than those who already had tests booked, nor are they opening bookings for new Hazard Perception Tests, so learners who hadnt booked their Hazards unfortunately face a longer wait for the opportunity to book their driving tests. Ill keep you informed!

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Phoebe from Seddon who passed her driving test at the Carlton licence testing centre today. Great work Phoebe, and drive safe!

14.01.2022 A no-brainer, so bring it on. WA has now joined Queensland in announcing it will bump up its penalty for drivers using a mobile phone to $1000 and four demerit points -- but interestingly, it will be restricted to such activities as texting, using social media and watching videos. WA is creating a lesser offence for touching a phone at traffic lights or holding the handset during a call. That will attract a $500 fine and three demerit points.

14.01.2022 Well here's a plan: sit your test to get your Learner Permit online at home. Will it ever happen? Victoria's Roads Minister would like to see it. https://www.abc.net.au//victorian-roads-minister-/12689130

12.01.2022 Get ready for ... advisory cycle lanes. Napier St, Fitzroy is a two-way street but with what looks like a single lane for cars. Take care there. https://twitter.com/lachlanla/status/1175614545101934592

12.01.2022 Dash Cam Australia videos on YouTube should be compulsory viewing for young drivers. 12.01.2022 This cam footage from a cyclist (@Lawyerz on Twitter) negotiating dangers along the length of Collins St is chilling to watch. Just one more reason for drivers to check mirrors before turning ... or doing anything! https://twitter.com/lawyerz/status/1189484393271681024?s=20

11.01.2022 Pressures building on VicRoads to get testing moving again, but still no action.

11.01.2022 The news weve been waiting for: The state government announced today that learner permit and licence testing, including drive tests, will progressively resume from Monday 15 June. The first priority under the staged resumption will be to re-book tests for those whose appointments were postponed due to coronavirus restrictions. As part of the resumption, more than 200 new staff will be hired to help work through the postponed appointments as quickly as possible, with testing ...to resume at all VicRoads testing locations. Six new, temporary licence testing sites will also be established to increase testing capacity, which will commence operation "in the coming months" (ie, not immediately!). Given that there was already a one-month wait for drive test bookings, and testing has been halted for almost three months, learner drivers may be still be in for a long and frustrating wait. Also note that holders of overseas licences have been given an extra 12 months beyond the original April 2020 deadline to convert to a Victorian driving licence. But with the current logjam, the best advice would be that if you are required to sit a knowledge and driving test, make those bookings as early as possible to avoid disappointment! Students whose bookings were postponed because of coronavirus restrictions will be contacted by VicRoads to make a new booking, but its important that Yes Ps customers check with us first before locking in a time to ensure were available to accompany you. And remember that as we ease out of restrictions, the same problem will be apparent as we entered them ... VicRoads office staff are the last ones to be told anything!

11.01.2022 Congratulations, Millie, the result was never in doubt!

11.01.2022 NSW is way ahead of Victoria in detecting drivers who use mobile phones. Mobile phone detection cameras are now in place. https://www.whichcar.com.au//mobile-phone-detection-camera

11.01.2022 Coronavirus update: Please be assured your health (and ours) is of primary importance. We are following all advice from Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria and the Australian Driver Trainers Association (Victoria) on keeping clients safe. At this stage all driving lessons are continuing. Disinfectant wipes are used between lessons to clean the steering wheel, gearshift, handbrake, door handle, indicators and all other parts of the car normally used during a lesson. If you have a lesson booked but feel unwell, please dont hesitate to cancel; there will be no penalty. Stay safe!

10.01.2022 Sadly, VicRoads has just announced that all driving tests, Hazard Perception Tests snd learner permit tests have been cancelled until further notice. They say those who have bookings will be given priority when tests resume. Ill keep you updated.

09.01.2022 Congratulations to Richie Delisle freedom at last!

09.01.2022 The backlog for both on-road driver tests and knowledge tests to gain learner permits must now stretch out into early 2021. Online tests is a sensible way of easing that backlog and helping many drivers gain their L-plates. https://www.gippslandtimes.com.au//online-learners-test-o/

09.01.2022 Random road law quiz No. 5: Which vehicle has to indicate? Two cars are heading north on Williamstown Rd, where the road bends left towards Geelong Rd. The white vehicle is following the road left, the silver car is continuing straight ahead on Williamstown Rd but facing a give-way sign. Which vehicle should indicate: (a) The white car turning left... (b) The silver car going straight ahead (c) Both cars (d) Neither car (Scroll down for answer) >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> Answer: (b) The silver car going straight ahead must signal right. Road Rule 45(3)(h) says that at a T-intersection where the continuing road curves to the left, a vehicle is changing direction when it leaves the continuing road to proceed straight ahead on to the terminating road. If it changes direction, it must signal and by using its right indicator as it approaches the give way sign, the silver car gives clear warning to any approaching cars that it is about to cross the road. Because the white car is simply following the course of the continuing road, it is not changing direction and does not need to signal. 08.01.2022 Random road law quiz No.4: Can P-plate drivers use the maps function on their mobile phones while driving? The answer is no: Victorias Road Rule No.300 forbids any use of mobile phones by probationary or learner drivers unless their vehicle is stationary and parked. Holders of a full drivers licence can use their phones for calls, music or maps if the phone is secured in a mounting or is being held by someone other than the driver but only as long as they dont need to p...ress anything on the body of the phone while using it. But even for a driver on a full licence, handling a phone while the vehicle is stationary in traffic (such as waiting at a red light) is still against the law. The penalty is a $322 fine and four demerit points which could be more costly for P-platers, whose licence will be suspended if they accrue more than five demerit points in any 12-month period. Another road safety tip from Yes Ps Driving School, servicing Melbournes inner west and surrounding suburbs.

08.01.2022 Hows this for worrying behaviour: almost four in five P-platers and just over half of learner drivers aged 16-17 have engaged in some form of risky driving on at least one of their 10 most recent trips. Two of the most common risky behaviours: speeding and driving while "very tired". Almost 4% of teens have driven while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and alarmingly one in 10 have been the passenger of a driver who has been under the influence. The most common teen ...risky drivers are male, aged 19-20 and more aggressive and hyperactive with a tendency to antisocial behaviour. https://growingupinaustralia.gov.au//risky-driving-among-a

08.01.2022 Congratulations to Ciara Esposto for a smooth performance in her drive test at Werribee today. Straight to green Ps!

07.01.2022 Im no traffic engineer, but ... This is how the West Gate Tunnel Project is planning inbound lanes on the West Gate Freeway on the approach to Williamstown Road once the tunnel opens in 2022. Citybound traffic from the Ring Road will have three lanes, traffic heading for the tunnel will have three lanes. All citybound traffic from Wyndham Vale, Point Cook, Williams Landing and everywhere westwards to Geelong will be squeezed into ... just one lane. You think traffic jams on the Princes Freeway today are bad? Freeway commuters, you have my sympathies.

05.01.2022 P is for patience ... and learner drivers are going to need it. VicRoads cancelled 55,000 driver tests because of coronavirus and they all need to be rebooked before new driver tests can be booked. That could take done time! 04.01.2022 News for German driving schools is as bad as it is for Aussie ones. But check out how rigorous the driving test and preparation is! https://www.nytimes.com//germany-coronavirus-driving-schoo

01.01.2022 An important message for holders of overseas and interstate drivers licences. As a result of a recent law change, every driver who holds an interstate or overseas licence must convert it to a Victorian licence within six months of residing in Victoria. Until recently, drivers faced a mix of rules when they moved to Victoria to live:... * Interstate drivers were required to convert to a Victorian licence within three months residence; * Permanent residence visa holders had six months to convert to a Victorian licence; and * Holders of temporary residence visas could drive in Victoria on their overseas licence indefinitely. As of October 28, those rules have been replaced by a simpler system. Every holder of an interstate or overseas licence (including from New Zealand) must now convert to a Victorian licence within six months of living here. That means every driver living in Victoria prior to October 28 must do so by the end of April. Failure to do so means they will become an unlicensed driver, subject to a $413 fine. Worse, if they are unlicensed and are involved in a collision, they are unlikely to be covered by their insurance policy. Dont waste time. If you are on a temporary residence visa and have a licence from a country that is not on VicRoads list of 27 recognised countries, you MUST prepare for, and then take, a driving test before the end of April in order to keep driving. Bookings may be difficult to obtain as the April deadline approaches. Contact Yes Ps Driving School today to book a driving session in which we will assess your driving and help you to pass the VicRoads driving test. Importantly, if you sit the test and FAIL, you will NOT be permitted to use your overseas licence again in Victoria. Instead you will need to apply for a Victorian Learner Permit and also require at all times a supervising driver who holds a full Victorian licence until you resit and pass your driving test.

01.01.2022 How many drivers do you see each day texting while they drive? So dangerous, so stupid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCSWRRCB1Ek

01.01.2022 Heres Tasmanias way of cutting the wait time for driving licence tests. At most VicRoads testing sites around Melbourne the wait is 4-6 weeks, which a senior VicRoads testing officer told me was acceptable to most applicants. Thats not what I hear from my students, particularly those who might fail a test and then face another frustrating month-long wait. (The Hobart Mercurys heading, by the way, makes no sense. They are L-platers, trying to get their P-plates).
