25.01.2022 Celebrating Yilays NAIDOC Artist 2020 Tara-Rose Butterworth - Marli Marli My name is Tara-Rose Butterworth and I am a young and proud Wagiman Woman... Born and raised in the western suburbs of Melbourne, my love for art began at a young age. Inspired by those around me, I started painting as soon as I could hold a paint brush. I have been creating, selling and exhibiting my artwork for the last 11 years around Australia. I like to consider my art style as a modern twist on tradition Aboriginal art. I love using dot and line work to tell my stories but feel connected to an un-traditional colour palette. Where I was taught by my grandmother to use natural colours, I have developed a style of my own, something I believe speaks to my story as a young Aboriginal woman growing up far from home. I aspire to continue to grow as an artist, building my connection to culture and becoming a leader in my community. 18.01.2022 Celebrating Yilays NAIDOC Artist 2020 Amunda Gorey - Amunda Gorey Art Amunda is an Arrernte artist who grew up in the remote community of Santa Teresa, an hour south/East of Alice Springs. Growing up in a time before all the crazy technology and the internet, art was a way her Mother kept the children busy. Amunda tried her hand at pottery, batik, sketching, painting, drawing and after finishing boarding school in 2002, took up painting with acrylics and saw it as more than... just a hobby. Thats when her art career started. Painting in this contemporary style gives Amunda much joy and relaxation, Amunda calls it her "me" time. Now currently residing in Melbourne to concentrate more on her art and working towards exhibitions for 2020. Amunda has previously been commissioned to paint for the likes of Richard Branson, Akon, Martin Luther King III. Whilst collaborating with many organisations, she has also given art to many charities and fundraising families to raise funds for their causes. 10.01.2022 Yilay was over the moon to be given the opportunity to work with the North Regional TAFE (WA) team - developing and manufacturing their new RAP shirts. A great team to work with and glad the shirts came out great for all their staff. Story behind the artwork: NR TAFE commissioned Broome artist Emily Hunter to create this stunning piece of artwork for the College, which we have utilised for our 2020 uniforms. Some of the key features of the artwork are the land and sea animals..., which are representative of the animals nearby our 11 campuses across the Kimberley and Pilbara. The blue represents the dominance of the ocean, rivers and rain throughout our regions. The orange represents pindan, the abundance of rocks and the harmony of a culturally diverse society. 09.01.2022 Celebrating Yilays NAIDOC Artist 2020 Davinder Hart Art Davinder Hart is an Indigenous artist who was born in Perth, Western Australian. His family roots connect from Bibbulmun & Katanning in the south west region of the Noongar people. After turning one he grew up in Adelaide till he was eighteen.... He traveled to Ayers Rock Resort in early 2013 where he became an Indigenous activities presenter showcasing his culture to the guests that arrived from around the world. Running workshops such as boomerang & spear throwing, Bush tucker talks, didgeridoo and traditional dance. Davinder is strongly connected to the Ngemba people west of New South Wales. They have provided him with identity and ownership for his culture by going out bush and practicing old traditional ways. With knowledge passed down from his uncles and aunties hes able to tell stories through his paintings. His Paintings reveal the traditional lessons that show the morals, ethics and values as well as his own personal lessons along his cultural journey. Since 2016 Davinder has become a local resident in Port Douglas in northern QLD. Davinder has been developing successfully as an indigenous artist. Davinders unique art has been selling locally, with in Australia and starting to become popular with clientele overseas such as the UK and USA. Davinder would like to acknowledge his uncle Waylon Boney & Grandfather Paul Gordon for their knowledge passed down. 06.01.2022 Yilay, like many businesses throughout Australia, were not immune to the effects of the Covid-19 lockdowns the first half of the 2020 year. Establishing a new direction 2 months prior to lockdowns across the country. A month into lockdown were tough times but like our mob before us, we are resilient, we are forever looking for avenues to improve and can adapt to our current surroundings and circumstances better than any. Wed like to thank our customers and community for supp...orting us during this testing journey, its greatly appreciated.
