24.01.2022 Can you help us name the people in these photographs, and what year they could have been taken? We believe the photos could be of the Fire Brigade and the St Joseph's Choir.

18.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Bullfinch? Let us take you there Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's an op...portunity to share stories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie. Bullfinch is a small town in the Wheatbelt, 405 kilometres from Perth in the Shire of Yilgarn. The name 'Yilgarn' is aboriginal for 'whitestone' or 'quartz'. Gold was discovered in the area in 1909 and the Bullfinch mine established. Banks, shops, boarding houses, agencies and mining offices stretching for half a mile quickly developed. The township was gazetted in 1910 and named after the mine. Bullfinch was connected to the railway line and water in 1911 but the gold boom was already tapering off. By 1912 hundreds of leases had been surrendered back to the Crown as worthless. The Bullfinch Mine closed in 1921. Bullfinch was saved from becoming a ghost town when the district was opened for farming. In 1932 two grain elevators were installed at the railway siding. In the same year, a syndicate called Copperhead re-opened the mine, before closing in 1942 due to a lack of labour. Western Mining Corporation re-opened the mine in 1952, and at its peak the town had 1500 people. The mine closed again in 1963. During this period the town of Bullfinch went through cycles of boom and busts. In 1987 but the booms did little to improve the fate of the old houses in town, or develop public facilities. Today only a few residents (34 in 2016 census) live in Bullfinch but it is still well worth a visit. 15.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Southern Cross? Let us take you there.. Your State Library is featuring WA country towns on its Facebook page. It's ...an opportunity to share stories and re-connect with old friends. Follow us on Facebook so you don't miss out, your town could be featured next. Southern Cross is located 371 kilometres east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway. It was founded by gold prospectors in 1888, and gazetted in 1890. Today it has a population of around 680 people and the surrounding areas produce wheat and other crops. Southern Cross is one of the many towns that run along the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme pipeline. The town is named after the Southern Cross constellation and its streets are named after constellations and stars. Take a moment to appreciate these photographs. Some from 1909 by Ernst Lund Mitchell (008335PD) and others by John Immig (BA2500/WASL_3413) taken in 2012. 01.01.2022 YILGARN HISTORY MUSEUM VOLUNTEER/S CURATOR POSITION The Yilgarn History Museum Committee, which is an Advisory Committee of the Shire of Yilgarn, is seeking the services of a Volunteer/s interested in undertaking the duties of Curator at the Museum.... The position involves the collating of local historical artefacts at the Museum and recording of these items on a specific software program. Knowledge of computers would be an advantage and it is envisaged that approximately one day per week of volunteered time would be required to undertake these duties. These duties could be shared by two like-minded people interested in recording our local history. If you believe that you could devote this valuable time to enable our local history to be recorded and held in perpetuity for the future residents of the Yilgarn district, training will be offered by the Museum’s current Volunteer Curator. Please contact the undersigned to register your interest. Robin Stevens Curator Yilgarn Historical Museum Committee
