24.01.2022 Congratulations to Geon Property on the development approval for Stage One of Albion Exchange! YIMBY Qld supported this proposal from the start by lodging the positive submission and encouraging the community to do the same. This project is a great example of the urban renewal and the revitalisation of under-utilised infill land around an inner suburbs railway station (Albion station). Reduced traffic, improved green space, connectivity and walkability, and ultimately more homes and different types of homes close to transport and the CBD are all great outcomes for Brisbane and we should continue to support this and similar project proposals. Let's continue to make Brisbane better! #YIMBYQld #yesinmybrisbane #gooddevelopmentoutcomes image courtesy: geonproperty.com.au

23.01.2022 https://www.qut.edu.au/news?id=164270 "QUT second-year architecture students were asked to design ADUs for suburban Brisbane sites. They were tasked with developing designs that responded to the specific conditions of the site, the broader suburb as well as designing a functional ADU under 50 sqm. What they came up with are realistic, liveable spaces that could support the needs of families, aged care, social housing, home offices and other uses.... Well done!! #architecture #urbandesign #gooddesign

22.01.2022 Well done to London for transitioning homeless out of encampments to healthier settings - hotel and motels! #communitydividend #covid19

22.01.2022 The great #toiletpapercrisis of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic had many Brisbane household members desperately seeking a multi-pack, or even just a roll or two. Little to their knowledge, your simple toilet paper habits could technically render a dwelling house unlawful. Find out more in our latest article. https://yimbyqld.com.au/why-who-pays-for-the-toilet-paper-/

21.01.2022 While our global community grieves and battles against the spread of COVID-19, it is now more important than ever to remember our humanity. Be kind, considerate and be vigilant. We are all in this together and we will all get through this together. #bekind #empathy #humanity #yimby #yimbyqld

21.01.2022 YIMBY Qld is advocating for the Qld Government to streamline processes that facilitate the delivery of critical homelessness services such as Beddown. There are opportunities to reduce red tape associated with establishing accommodation for vulnerable people, enabling and empowering charities such as Beddown to be more responsive to what is expected to be a growing need during the economic recovery. Beddown and other forms of social and affordable housing require a yes in my... back yard, or YIMBY mindset more than any other form of development! 21.01.2022 Great chatting with Julian Agyeman (Just Sustainabilities by Julian Agyeman) this morning in Boston. Julian is Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University, author of Just Sustainabilities amongst a wide collection of influential articles, chapters and books, challenging urban planning thinking and debate. This morning his article "Urban planning as a tool of white supremacy - the other lesson from Minneapolis" was published in the Conversation..., and is definitely worth a read. He is leading the conversation on this important topic. His message resonates with us at YIMBY Qld. No longer is it good enough to be a passive planner. We need to be active in this debate. Join us in conversation as we reflect on the similarities with Brisbane's zoning patterns. We too have around 70% single family zoning. We too have blocked duplexes, triplexes and townhouses, banning diversity of housing within our established single family dwelling dominated suburbs. How can we better engage to make sure we're listening to all the voices? What should we be doing about it? https://theconversation.com/urban-planning-as-a-tool-of-whi

19.01.2022 Tiny house movement is not new but in the midst of the current pandemic the demand spiked again and is not envisioned to fall. Last night, Chanel Nine News reported a 20-25% increase in enquiries for tiny homes in Queensland. The concept of tiny homes has been touted as one solution to combat the problems of unaffordable housing, homelessness and environmental sustainability. Its known to be a popular choice among older single women the fastest growing demographic of ...homelessness in Australia, and by organisations that want to make a difference, such as Launch Housing in Victoria, where a small tiny house village was developed in Melbournes inner west on government land that otherwise would have been unused. Small houses always existed, and it is really only in the last century that houses started to get bigger, notes Tristan Perry, from Super Tiny Homes, a supporter of minimalism and eco-friendly lifestyle. In 1906, over 5,500 tiny homes provided relief accommodation to 20,000 people after a disastrous earthquake. And in 1944 in UK, tiny homes offered basic needs to many people after the Second World War. COVID-19 already proved to be changing our lifestyle needs, will it also help boost more affordable housing choices? What do you think? #yimbyqld #communitydividend #affordablehousing

18.01.2022 Brisbane City Council unveiled the initial design impressions of the proposed Kangaroo Point to Alice Street green bridge. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced that the project timeline has been brought forward, work could commence as early as 2021. COVID-19 has seen many people making lifestyle changes away from the car in favour of active transport. This project is a big step forward in supporting the communities shift towards sustainable transportation in Brisbane and is a big YES from YIMBY Qld! 15.01.2022 Let's talk about women! As we celebrate International Women's Day 2020, let's look at the realities of situations of many women in Australia. As we work towards reducing the gender pay gap in Australia, we are far from creating equal opportunities for women, as we expand the gap through other means. New on the blog. 14.01.2022 While weve been quiet, weve been busy! Our CEO, Natalie, had the privilege of meeting our YIMBY friends from California (San Francisco and Portland). Their enthusiasm and energy is simply contagious as they are challenging housing crisis, affordability issues, housing diversity, racial segregation through housing policy, car reliance and more. Great to see YIMBY influence on local politics exists. Coming home to quite the opposite news and feeling, following the recent ban on townhouses, we dont know what to say. An international disgrace. Hopefully this new policy will be recognised for what it dismantled before too long! #yimby #yimbyqld #yesinmybackyard #yimbyportland #yimbysanfrancisco #californiayimby

14.01.2022 Today, on World Population Day 2020, we call upon all leaders, policymakers and place-makers to continue to create and protect places where all of us - our families, children, friends, neighbours and our natural environment and its habitat can co-exist; Where all the basic needs are addressed; And diversity is embraced and accommodated. And we call all members of our community for their support in embracing change and sustainable growth. #yimbyqld https://yimbyqld.com.au/from-destruction-to-diversity-to-d/

13.01.2022 There are a number of global programmes that provide cheap (or free) housing to students who offer their time to support the elderly. The result: affordable housing for the young and fight against loneliness for the elderly. In Milan, for example, Take Home a Student project has connected over 600 pairs since its inception in 2004 and inspired similar initiatives throughout the world. In the Netherlands, uni students are offered free rent for 30 hours a month of their time... acting as neighbours to retirees. Unfortunately, our rigid separation of town planning definitions leaves little room for flexibility of this nature, the problem being that once an approval is issued for one land use, it is often a costly and time consuming exercise to create some flexibility for innovative solutions down the track, even when there is no change to built form or even number of occupants, just their age. In comparison, the previous planning scheme grouped a range of household types into a single definition multi-unit dwellings, which included retirement village, aged care accommodation, hostel or community dwelling, leaving options open for innovation over time. https://www.weforum.org//why-some-students-in-milan-are-m/

06.01.2022 We can all now keep an I on development in Brisbane! Brisbane City Council has today launched Development.i - a new online development information tool allowing people to search for development information using multiple search criteria. At YIMBY Qld we are very excited about this and believe its a major step in bridging the gap between planners, development and the community. We encourage you to adopt a YIMBY mindset, share your views about planning and development outcom...es, keep an open mind, and take the time to clarify any misinformation or misunderstandings. 06.01.2022 A house or a high rise, or take a hike! From today, we understand our housing choices will be limited in Brisbane. Today, if the ban is approved at Councils meeting, will be the start of Exclusionary Zoning in Brisbane. What does that mean? It means that from today, the majority of Brisbane neighbourhoods will be reserved for only single houses (and the odd aged care home). Over two thirds of our residential areas will now be reserved for big houses with only one household ...in each. Whats left of our residential land mostly facilitates mid to high rise apartment living. Joining the officially banned list in the majority of Brisbane today will be new townhouses. Townhouses will join the company of the already banned forms of missing middle housing including low-rise apartments, duplexes, rentable granny flats or fonzie flats and tiny houses (unless theyre on wheels), from your typical Brisbane neighbourhood. It seems like youll have 3 choices, a house, or a high rise, or take a hike! Head to our blog to read more #YIMBYQld #yimbyqldblog #yesinmybrisbane #albionexchange See more

05.01.2022 The anticipated Waterfront Brisbane development proposal by Dexus is now lodged with Brisbane City Council. This is exciting news for Brisbane as it will revitalise the existing Eagle Street precinct. The $2.1 billion development incorporates two commercial office towers, a retail component, new river link and 6m wide promenade upgrade which is much needed for cyclists and pedestrians. The design creates a functional public realm and opens up the river connection to allow for safe and enjoyable active travel opportunities for our city. Its a YES from YIMBY Qld! #yimbyqld #gooddevelopment #yesinmybrisbane #repost via #brisbanetimes

04.01.2022 We know great urban spaces instantly! We recognise them! is one of the comments that stood out for us in the seminar we attended last week - From the Beaches to the Suburbs: how will COVID change our cities? with Lucy Turnbull, Kiersten Fishburn (CEO of Liverpool City Council) and Gabriel Metcalf (CEO of the Committee for Sydney). It was a great discussion with one of the conclusions being: We let our urban form disadvantage people, but broadly we do know how to [do it b...etter] .. we just need political support and everybody on board Great urban spaces are about people, not just places, they offer a great variance in passive and active recreation. They are owned by people, not by cars. The current pandemic serves only as a proof that we all crave human connections, that we want spaces that provide walkability, cycling connections, green spaces - which are all functions of liveability and come more naturally with density and good planning and urban design practices that can no longer wait to be implemented. Do you agree? #yimby #yimbyqld #communitydividend #greatcitiesarenoaccident

03.01.2022 Good design matters! Dont you agree? We think this Zaha Hadid Architect designed building in New York City is a great example of new development that achieves design excellence, one of the four YIMBY Qld pillars of good development. Zaha Hadid is one of the worlds most acclaimed architects of our time, and the first woman and first Muslim person to be awarded the heralded Pritzker Architecture Prize. Buildings designed by Zaha Hadid not only exude design excellence but often become internationally recognised landmarks for their host city. Our city, Brisbane, missed the opportunity to have the first Zaha Hadid designed building built in Australia #designexcellence #missedopportunities #YIMBYQld #gettingtoyes
