21.01.2022 [CARBOHYDRATE COUNTING] Carbohydrate counting is a way of estimating the amount of carbohydrate in different foods. Why is the amount of carbohydrate important? All carbohydrates are converted to glucose within about two hours of eating, directly affecting your blood glucose levels. Protein and fibre from veggies will affect the effect of this speed therefore it is important to look at the meal as a whole. Spreading carbohydrate foods evenly across the day can help ma...intain energy levels and keep your blood glucose levels within your target range. Eating too much carbohydrate at one time can result in high blood glucose levels after meals. Eating too little carbohydrate can result in low energy levels. If you use insulin or certain types of blood glucose lowering medications, eating too little carbohydrate or skipping a meal can make your blood glucose level drop too low and cause hypoglycaemia (a hypo). BALANCE is the key An Accredited Practising Dietitian specialising in Diabetes aka ME can teach you how to count the carbohydrates in your current diet to tailor a plan that suits your lifestyle, medication regime and food preferences. 21.01.2022 The glycemic index (GI) is a number from 0 to 100 assigned to a food, with pure glucose arbitrarily given the value of 100, which represents the relative rise in the blood glucose level two hours after consuming that food. The low-GI diet involves swapping high-GI foods for low-GI alternatives. It has a number of potential health benefits, including reducing blood sugar levels, lowering your risks of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. There are plenty of healthy and nutritiou...s foods to choose from. Try base your diet on the following low-GI foods: Bread: Whole grain, multigrain, rye and sourdough varieties Breakfast cereals: Porridge made with rolled oats, bircher muesli and All-Bran Fruit: Such as apples, strawberries, apricots, peaches, plums, pears and kiwi Vegetables: Such as carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, tomatoes and zucchini Starchy vegetables: Carisma and Nicola potato varieties, sweet potatoes with an orange flesh, corn, yams Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, butter beans, kidney beans Pasta and noodles: Pasta, soba noodles Rice: Basmati, Doongara, low GI rice Grains: Quinoa, barley, pearl couscous, buckwheat Dairy: Milk, yogurt, custard #smarteatingweek #type2Diabetes #glycaemicindex #lowGIfoods #perthdietitian #perthdiabetes #perthdiabeteseducator #perthnutritionist

18.01.2022 [CARB CONTENT OF DIMSUM FAVOURTIES] For each main meal, we usually suggest balancing protein and vegetables with 2-3 carbohydrate serves (aka 30-45g of carbohydrates) 30 grams of carbohydrate looks like:... 1 cha siu bao 1 noodle roll 5 xiao long bao 7.5 dumplings 7.5 siu mai 4 fried dumplings That would mean 1 bun hits the carbohydrate recommendation for ONE meal! No wonder glucose levels spike after a humble meal of dimsum with bunsssss and dumplingssssss! Don't be afraid of eating these foods, the key is to aim for a balance! Not all dimsum dishes are high in carbohydrates. Stay tuned for a list of low carb dimsum ideas! See more

18.01.2022 TODAY is the final day of Dry July! It is my first time going 1 full month without a drop of alcohol. It's been VERY INTERESTING! It's made me realise that I actually don't really need it, most of the time it's a family member who offers it and I just say yes and drink with them. The only time where I felt like I'm missing out is the work dinners where it's unlimited for FREE! There was only 2 of these occasions this last month. I think I will just leave it for those f...ree rep dinners to have my 1-2 glasses of booze. #dietitianlife #perthdietitian #perthdiabeteseducator #dietitiansofinstagram #dietitianapproved #dietitianeats #dietitianlife #dietitiantips #dietitianblogger #dietitianfood #yingyangnutrition #diabetesdietitian #diabetesfood #gdmdietitian #gestationaldiabetes #diabetesfriendly #diabetestype1 #diabetestype2 #whatsonmyplate #dryjuly2019 #dryjuly #alcoholfree #berlin #germany #alcohol See more

17.01.2022 Carbohydrate content for Chinese New Year treats all in one post! Each of these are worth 2 carbohydrate exchanges (30 grams of carbs) i.e. 3 pineapple tarts = 3 love letters = 1.5 slices bak kwa = 9 mini shrimp rolls = 8 white rabbit candy = 3 slices kueh lapis. For people with Gestational Diabetes, you can have this amount as a snack. Be mindful these are still energy dense so keep it as a treat! 15.01.2022 Ever wondered what the GI of different Asian noodles are? high GI, medium GI, low GI Whether you have diabetes or not, eating lower GI foods is beneficial for: blood sugar levels insulin response weight control feeling fuller for longer appetite control... If you have high blood sugar levels & you love noodles, cook with/ order a dish with low GI noodles, e.g. bee hoon, vermicelli or jap chae! But careful with your portion too Note: Shirataki, made from Konjac, has minimal effect on blood sugar & is high in fibre! Instant noodles are high in fat as they are usually deep-fried, so it's still not a healthy choice. 15g (1 exchange) of carbohydrate is 1/2 cup of noodles. For a balanced serve, aim for about 1-1.5 cups of cooked noodle with protein and veggies. Which noodle is your favourite? 15.01.2022 BAK KWA aka dried meat. This Hokkien treat originated from the province of Fujian in China. As poverty was widespread in the past, the consumption of meat is a luxury and only kept for special occasions such the celebration of the New Year. These BBQ meats are often dipped in a sugar and spice marinate before being air dried and roasted over charcoal. Too bad we can't bring them through customs anymore due to the African swine flu. They are so delicious! 1.5 slices is 30g carbs (2 exchanges) #gdmdietitian #perthdietitian #perthdiabeteseducator #perthdiabetesdietitian #chinesenewyearfood #bakkwa #foodhistory

10.01.2022 YU SHENG or LO HEI aka prosperity toss is a raw fish salad. Traditionally, fishermen along the coast of Guangzhou celebrated the seventh day of the Chinese New Year, by feasting on their catches. Eating Yu Sheng during Chinese New Year is a cultural activity for Chinese living in Singapore and Malaysia, but not so much in other Chinese-populated countries such as Hong Kong, where the practice is almost unheard of. No wonder I've only learnt about this LO HEI dish since... coming to Perth #chinesenewyearmeal #chinesenewyeardish #chinesenewyearsnack #perthdietitian #perthdiabetesdietitian #perthdiabeteseducator #foodhistory

03.01.2022 This year is the first year where I don't get to accept money from my relatives, instead I have to give red packets to the next generation. The only hope for some side income is from my furbaby. Work hard @thefrenchtea! #chinesenewyear #yearofthepig

02.01.2022 THE MOST ASKED QUESTION OF THE MONTH: Can I drink bubble tea if I have Diabetes? Bubble tea aka pearl milk tea, bubble milk tea or boba is a Taiwanese tea-based drink invented in Tainan and Taichung in the 1980s. The recipes contain tea of some kind, flavours of milk and sugar. Toppings, known as "pearls", such as chewy tapioca balls, popping boba, fruit jelly, grass jelly, agar jelly, and puddings are often added. Ice-blended versions are frozen and put into a blender, r...esulting in a slushy consistency. My family used to run a bubble tea shop when we were little, I honestly was shocked at how the tapioca balls were cooked in sugar syrup. FOLLOW @yingyangnutrition to be the first to find out what the carbohydrate content is in bubble tea. #perthdietitian #carbohydratecounting #carbcounting #nutritionfacts #food #carbs #carbohdyrate #dietitian #dietitianfacts #dietitianlife #perthdiabeteseducator #diabetes #diabeteseducator #glucose #perthnutritionist #nutrition #yingyangnutrition #archibaldhealthcentre #bubbletea #chinesefood #drink #taiwan #perth # See more
