11.01.2022 "Today is R U OK day, so let's pause and consider this important question. R U OK? To say that 2020 has been challenging for us all is the understatement of the century. Between the Australian bushfires and the Global COVID-19 pandemic, we've all had to dig deep to find ways to cope with the onslaught of realities we're facing, the challenges of working in new ways (both personally and professionally), and the volume of news via media and social media. We've had to face a hea...lth crisis, economic crisis, mental health crisis, humanitarian crisis, with intolerable forms of racism and fake news as well. We've had to dig even deeper to manage, inspire, and innovate during this season. I know personally, it has been like a roller-coaster ride, some highs, and a lot of scary abrupt lows that can really pull you down. We have been stretched and forced to change in so many ways, in business, the way we work, and the way we connect. The importance of connection at this time is paramount to us all. Let's also take the time to look around us (some virtually), and observe our family, friends, and colleagues and if necessary, ask them R U OK? Let's particularly look around at young people we know, and make sure we find out if they're okay. The official R U OK Day site has expert advice on how to effectively ask others how they are. Beyond Blue also has some great tips on wellbeing, supporting yourself, and supporting others. Last year, Jayden Parsons' powerful message at the global gathering of Y175 was to follow up on your initial inquiry with another question: How are you really? So my following question to you all again this year is HOW ARE YOU REALLY? headspace is a great organisation focused on the mental wellbeing of young people. Headspace has great resources to assist young people and provide tailored and holistic mental health support to 12-25 year olds. If you recognize you might need a little help, please reach out. Contacts for crisis support services can be reached 24 hours a day: Lifeline 13 11 14; and Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636. At the Y, we also have an Employee Assistance Program that staff can confidentially call for free counselling sessions. Please reach out if you need to. So let's all pause and reflect on this important question - R U OK? And to follow it up with - How are you really? Stay safe everyone, and please take care of you." - Melinda Crole, CEO YMCA Australia #ruokday2020 (Image: Melinda Crole pictured with YMCA Change Agents in early 2019 (pre Covid 19 social distancing requirements) See more

07.01.2022 YMCA history of the Red Poppy - 102 years ago, Moina Michael, who worked for the American YMCA, read Lieutenant Colonel McCrae's poem just before the Armistice and was so moved by it that she wrote a poem in reply and decided to wear a red poppy. At a meeting of YMCA secretaries, held in November 1918, she talked about the poem and her poppies, and Anna Guérin, the French YMCA secretary, started selling poppies to raise money for widows, orphans, and needy veterans and their... families. We Shall Keep the Faith by Moina Michael, November 1918 Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew! We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red Of the flower that blooms above the dead In Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields. #remembranceday #LestWeForget See more
