22.01.2022 A big congrats to Wendy Thornbury, recipient of a national Y Hero Award for 2020 for the Y in Whittlesea for her above and beyond efforts in this most challenging of years Wendy has been an integral part of Galada Kindergarten in Whittlesea for the past six years and is described by all who know her as a Y Hero on many levels who shows a huge commitment, heart, and passion in everything she does from spending her free days and weekends completing training modules to be...tter support her colleagues, to creating local partnerships which include intergenerational connections between children and seniors, and with local environmental organisations to foster the spark of environmental interest in children. She is always looking after her team with little gifts (often handmade products, creating a relaxation station in our staff kitchen, offering walks, and coffee, providing the team with motivational messages). Congratulations Wendy! What an incredible asset you are to the Y. Image: Michele Rowse CEO of the Y Whittlesea presents Wendy Thornbury with her national Y hero award. YMCA Whittlesea

22.01.2022 Y SA National Hero Award winner - COVID Vacation Care Program Congrats to the Y of South Australia’s COVID-19 Vacation Care program team recipient of a Y Australia Hero Award for 2020 for its magnificent work in keeping 22 vulnerable young people actively engaged and positively connected during the COVID-19 lockdown in SA in March. In conjunction with the Department of Human Services (DHS), the Y SA reactivated four of its managed metropolitan recreation centres to pro...vide school holiday care for at-risk young people aged 12 to 16, in direct response to an urgent need to provide a safe vacation environment while isolation measures were in place. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with kids becoming friends, developing trust and responsibility, trying new things, and minimal gadget use. Congrats to the whole team, demonstrating the Y’s belief in action. Image: Kristin receiving the Y SA’s National Hero Award 2020 from CEO David Paterson on behalf of the Vacation Care team. YMCA SA

19.01.2022 An innovative approach from the Y to create meaningful pathways for young people into caring careers being recognised. In all, the "Y" has identified 42 priority hot spots where it's proposing a fix. Already one of the largest employers of young people in Australia, the organisation wants to trial a new approach of training young workers in these sites to begin caring careers. We are willing to commit $40 million in wages and are seeking nearly $12 million from the Governme...nt for infrastructure along with access to the existing wage and apprentice subsidies. If given the green light, 1,500 young Australians would have a job in January and a pathway to a career in caring. A relatively small-scale proposal like this won't entirely solve either problem of youth unemployment or the shortage of care workers, but this does represent some creative thinking. #theY ABC Australia

15.01.2022 YMCA history of the Red Poppy - 102 years ago, Moina Michael, who worked for the American YMCA, read Lieutenant Colonel McCrae's poem just before the Armistice and was so moved by it that she wrote a poem in reply and decided to wear a red poppy. At a meeting of YMCA secretaries, held in November 1918, she talked about the poem and her poppies, and Anna Guérin, the French YMCA secretary, started selling poppies to raise money for widows, orphans, and needy veterans and their... families. We Shall Keep the Faith by Moina Michael, November 1918 Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew! We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red Of the flower that blooms above the dead In Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields. #remembranceday #LestWeForget

09.01.2022 Y WA National Hero Award winner Y WA Children’s Services Team Congratulations to the Y WA’s Childrens’ Services team recipients of a Y Australia Hero Award for 2020! When West Australia went into COVD-19 lockdown in March, the frontline childrens’ services were the only Y employees deemed as essential and unable to work from home. It was a scary time. Our Childrens’ Services team was tirelessly putting themselves in harms’ way to ensure children and families had acc...ess to care, at a time when West Australia was most vulnerable to community transmission. The entire Y WA Children Services team was amazing in how they handled the continual changes that came through from government and worked unbelievably hard to make sure families were not disrupted by the changes. Thanks to all our Childrens’ Services frontline heroes, and congratulations to the team in WA for the recognition of your team in going above and beyond as Y WA’s National Y Hero Award Recipient for 2020 a team that displayed heroic, creative, and nurturing traits in bucket loads!
