20.01.2022 Samyama is the term used by Patanjali to describe the last 3 limbs of Ashtanga Yoga. Iyengar says ‘Samyama is a technical word defining the integration of concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana) and absorption (samadhi). In samyama the three are a single thread, evolving from uninterrupted attention to samadhi. Dharana is singlepointed attention. It modifies into dhyana by being sustained in time whilst dissolving its onepointed character implicit in the word 'concen...tration'. When it becomes allpointed, which is also nopointed (that is to say equally diffused, but with no drop in attentiveness) it leads to total absorption (samadhi).’ In this short introduction to the class recorded on 10/07/20 Alan gives an introduction to Samyama. Following posts will continue to explore this aspect of practice. www.yogamandir.com.au if you want to join us in these virtual classes or look at the Yoga Mandir Youtube channel for more excerpts

19.01.2022 Bite on Sutra. BKS Iyengar's statement that the state of the body affects the state of the mind, expresses the Yogic understanding that the body is a visible expression of the underlying state of the consciousness. The body is not separate to the mind. Obstacles may be physical or mental. He writes: ‘When there is perfect harmony between body and mind, we achieve self-realization. Yoga teaches us that obstacles in the path of our self-realization indicate themselves in physic...al or mental indisposition. When our physical state is not perfect, this causes an imbalance in our mental state, which is known in Sanskrit as citta-vrtti. The practice of yoga helps us to overcome that imbalance. Yogic asanas, or poses, can cure vyadhi or physical ailments, and redress angamejayatva or unsteadiness in the body, Shvasaprashvasa, which translates as "uneven respiration"- an indication of stress - is alleviated by the practice of yoga. Asanas tone the whole body. They strengthen bones and muscles, correct posture, improve breathing, and increase energy. This physical well-being has a strengthening and calming impact on the mind’. 13.01.2022 Dharana (concentration) as a part of Samyama Iyengar writes ‘Because Dharana is so easy to translate, we often overlook or dismiss its importance. Paying attention in yogic terms is not concentration. True concentration is an unbroken thread of awareness. Yoga is about how the Will, working with intelligence and the self-reflexive consciousness, can free us from the inevitability of the wavering mind and outwardly directed senses’. 10.01.2022 Throwback to our visit to Jain Temple last year, and to one of the beautiful images of Vimna there. Vimna are mythological flying palaces or chariots described in Hindu texts and Sanskrit epics. The Pushpaka Vimana of the king Ravana (who took it from Lord Kubera; Rama returned it to Kubera) is the most quoted example of a Vimna.

07.01.2022 Dhyana (contemplation) as a part of Samyama Iyengar writes ‘Meditation is not something that can be expressed in words. It must be directly experienced in one's life. Nor can meditation be taught. If someone says he is teaching meditation, you can immediately know that he is not a yogi at all. Meditation is to bring the complex consciousness to simplicity and innocence without pride and arrogance. No spiritual experience is possible without ethical discipline. Ethical and spi...ritual practices go together, to drink the nectar of divinity’. 05.01.2022 "The conjunction of effort, concentration and balance in asana forces us to live intensely in the present moment, a rare experience in modern life. This actuality, or being in the present, has both a strengthening and a cleansing effect: physically in the rejection of disease, mentally by ridding our mind of stagnated thoughts or prejudices; and, on a very high level where perception and action become one, by teaching us instantaneous correct action... action which does not produce reaction." - B.K.S Iyengar.
