25.01.2022 I love how #yogaprops can often (not always) make #yogaposes more accessible. Although to be able to bind the arms in these poses you need to right anatomy, especially the right orientation and location of the #acromionprocess. Plus lots going on in the hips with the #lessertrochanter location affecting your leg in the air in the second pose not to mention my tight hamstrings. #chairyoga #uthitaparsvakonasana #extendedsideanglepose #birdofparadise #asana #yogaeverydamnday #yourbodyyouryoga #chairyoga #yogachair #svarjadvijasana
25.01.2022 Some #yogateachers call this #eyeoftheneedlepose some call it #figurefourpose others call it #supinepigeonpose the name doesn’t matter. What matters is finding the version which targets the hips without any knee and ankle pain (a red flag for this pose) hence various options or perhaps a different pose all together. #yourbodyyouryoga #yinyang #yinyoga #yinstagram #yinster #yinisin #yin #yinyogaisthenewblack #wallyin #wallyinyoga #wallyogapose #wallyoga

21.01.2022 A little bit about me.... I discovered yoga in January 2011 when a friend took me to a Bikram Yoga class with the promise of calorie burning and flexibility. In the coming months I discovered the power of yoga was far greater after finally quitting a long term habit of smoking on and off since the age of 15, haven’t touched a cigarette in nearly 10 years as a result. In 2012 I did my first 200 hour teacher training and left a 10 year career in the federal government in the ho...pe of working in a job that was less stressful, more fulfilling and something I was passionate about. Since yoga has helped my own mental health I’ve undertaken additional studies in #yogaformentalhealth with @lifeforceyogaom @rosekress @amylifeforceyoga and have run workshops on this in Canberra and Sydney. In 2004 I discovered Pilates after a fall from my Arabian Mare resulted in a torn ACL and lower back pain as I used this to rehabilitate my body. It wasn’t until 2014 that I started doing group #reformerpilates classes and considered training in Pilates at the same time that I was undertaking my Diploma in Fitness. I did this through Studio Pilates and trained initially in Mat work, then reformer then Cadillac and Wunda Chair. 1 month before I got married in 2017 I moved here to Melbourne after living my whole life in the small capital city of Canberra. In 2019 I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl who I will forever be grateful for. I hope to share the power of yoga with her and encourage her to leave an active lifestyle like I do. I feel privileged and lucky to work in a job that I’m passionate about and doesn’t always seem like a job! #yogajourney #jobpassion #joblove #yogaeverydamnday #yogateacher #pilatesinstructor #melbourneyogateacher #melbournepilatesinstructor See more

20.01.2022 #grateful for another year around the sun, many don’t get to reach the age of 39. People including my late sister Nicole (who was denied more than two days) and several first cousins and children of friends. When I got to the age of 25, I went through a stage of dreading my birthday as I felt I was old (even though I wasn’t and I’m still not unless you’re 22 or less then I’m old according to my step kids ). After the age of 30 I realised that growing older is a dignity denied... to many. So this birthday spent in #stage4iso I’m just grateful for this. Rather than chose to judge myself on what I weigh and what size clothes I wear after 2 pregnancies and nearly 10 years free of cigarettes, I chose to embrace the curves I have and celebrate my body for what it is, not for what it never will be again. I chose to celebrate what my body is capable of, not judge it for what it can’t do. I chose to celebrate my mental and emotional bodies for what they have overcome after suffering complex trauma. I’ll be grateful if I get another year around the sun, in what is a completely different world to what it was on my last birthday. Grateful for both the hard and easy times, the many curveballs life has thrown my way, which has made me a wiser person each day. #gratitude #gratitudeattitude #gratitudepractice #metoo #metoomovement #ahimsa #santosha #fallentrianglepose #yogaasana #yogaeverydamnday #yogajourney See more

18.01.2022 Ballerina or runner? The angle of inclination of the neck of the femur (thigh bone) will determine how much movement occurs in the hip joint. The more slanted t...he angle, the greater the range of motion (ROM). More is not always better though. It always depends on what you want to do with your hips. A ballerina would prefer more range as her profession requires her to maximise that reach in order to look impressive in her dance. An Olympic runner may prefer otherwise, as his profession requires more stability in his movements. Giving him more range may adversely affect his running performance. The limited range that he has actually saves him energy and renders him more efficiency and power to perform his forward sprint. More ROM is great for exercises that require flexibility but bad for those that require speed. You may be more flexible but you are also slower. So it really depends on what do you want to do with the bones that you have. The shape of our bones are pretty much fixed by the time we reach puberty. You cannot change it (unless you go for aesthetic surgery). So when practising yoga (or any other movement modalities), it is vital we respect the limitations of our #anatomy (which is in our DNA), and work within "our own healthy range" instead of imitating what others can and we cannot. #EverySkeletonIsDifferent (Check the other post about the anatomy of the acetabulum @jopheeyinyoga) Learn all about #boneanatomy and #skeletalvariation in our next #anatomy trainings and learn how to apply them safely to your #yoga poses or teachings. 18.01.2022 Happy International Yoga Day! I don’t think there is one simple sentence that can describe what yoga is that can resonate with everyone’s practice or experience. #Yoga can mean different things to different people. My #yogajourney started off with just a way to sweat, unwind and burn calories. Nearly 10 years later it’s so much more than that and also nothing about burning calories! Especially now as I delve more into the practice of #svadhyaya #selfstudy #dharana #pratyahara #dyana and learn more about #yogaphilosophy #yogaismorethanasana #yogainspiration #yogaismagic #yogaislife #yogaism #yogi #yogastudent #yogateacher #yogais #yogaeverydamnday #internationalyogaday #internationalyogaday2020
18.01.2022 R U Ok? Yes it’s not RUOK day yet, but it is indeed turbulent times around the world, for Australia it’s felt especially here in Melbourne during stage 4 lockdown. It’s felt throughout the world for people who have lost loved ones to Covid and who have lost their jobs and businesses or who are stressed they will soon be in this position or who are suffering from sheer isolation and loneliness from lockdown. While I am in support of the lockdown as I believe it’s the only way ...out I am indeed worried about people’s mental health. During times like this our well-being can take a backseat yet during times like these it’s even more important. I am one of the lucky ones who hasn’t been hurt by this as badly as others. I also have the tools of LifeForce Yoga (yoga for mental health) to support me which in my humble opinion and experience the best style of Hatha Yoga for mental health. I encourage you to pick up the phone, check on friends, family and colleagues or seek support if you need it. We can get through this. My door is always open. Namaste Liz See more

17.01.2022 Happy New Year! This week in my yoga classes I’ve been encouraging my students to create a #drishti #focus for 2021 rather than set New Years resolutions and leave behind what no longer serves them from 2020. Often the end of a year brings along feelings of failure that we haven’t stuck to these resolutions, but what we must understand is that these resolutions are often hard to stick to and can set us up for failure, leading to these feelings of guilt. The end of the year i...s also a great time to reflect on our own growth, and many of us have seen more of this in 2020 with the many curve balls we have been thrown which brings proof of our own resilience. 2020 was the first year I created a #visionboard which I found to be more positive than resolutions. We don’t know that 2021 will be easier than 2020, but many of us are more prepared and resilient if it isn’t. #happynewyear #2021 #intentionsetting #yogaeverydamnday #positivemindset #positivity See more

15.01.2022 No one on this earth is perfect. Not one of us #yogis lives their yoga perfectly. Most of us haven’t achieved enlightenment and reduced our #suffering to nil and probably never will. I’m one of them. I believe there’s only a handful of people who really achieve #enlightenment in the world today. Most of us will never truly get into a state of #dyana #meditation and if we do it may only be for a very brief time (I’m talking seconds), instead we work on the practice of #pratyah...ara #sensorywithdrawal and #dharana #concentration (which are often confused as meditation when they are steps towards it) and the benefit of this alone is great for #mentalhealth And I’m one of them. Yesterday stage 4 finally got to me and I cracked and here I am waiting to find out if I have covid for the second time. Before this I was thinking ‘you got this, you’re fine’! Many of us come to yoga looking to become more flexible, then we discover it’s not really about that, instead it’s kind training that has far more benefits that mere flexibility. As touching your toes isn’t going to solve your problems, trust me I can easily touch them and I have a list of problems like most of us! Plus many of us come to yoga as we are broken mentally and are looking for something to help save us, this was me too (nearly 10 years ago) and the mental health benefits have been immense but I still have my days where I crack. So I remember what world renownedy yogi #judithhansonlasater said to me in 2014, ‘how human of you! Forgive yourself for being human’. #yogaphilosophy #yogajourney #wisdom #yogawisdom #livingyouryoga #yogaeverydamnday See more

15.01.2022 I’ve held back but it’s time to speak out. Please share and repost because we need to be heard. We really need to reclassify gyms and fitness centres as an esse...ntial service. Despite the incredible ignorance of the chief health officer, stating that gyms are ‘a high risk setting and that they cause outbreaks’. That is just not true. Data collected by Fitness Australia across over 500 gyms in NSW that have reopened since June, show that there have been over 7 million visits without a single recorded case of community transmission. Despite the ignorance of politicians and people that don’t work out, going to the gym is so much more than physical fitness. It provides a coping mechanism for millions of Australians to keep their mental health in check, to keep depression and anxiety at bay. In many cases it is the single thread that holds so many people’s lives together. Exercise obviously keeps you healthy and boosts your immune system. There are so many reasons that make gyms safer, more hygienic and cleaner than the Victorian premier and his chief health officer could begin to understand. From the contact tracing issue, we are so far ahead of every other industry. Members swipe in with a fob that provides their name, phone number, photograph, address and date of birth. It tells us what time they enter the gym to the very minute. It also can trace every single person that is in the facility at any given time. When we go to the supermarket or bottle shop, there is no identification check, not even a sign in system. Compared to last time Victoria was able to have their businesses open, with restaurants shops etc. We were able to enter shops with no check in. Cafes and restaurants by signing in on a clipboard. A clipbord not sanitised, with the same pen that everybody else used without the offer of hand sanitiser to follow. When people enter our gyms they check-in and they have to sanitise their hands before they enter. Every machine or bench is 1.5m apart. Every second cardio machine is switched off and taped up so they can’t be used to adhere with social distancing. We have hygiene stations everywhere, with disposable paper towel and hospital grade disinfectant. Members must wipe down every bench, handle, barbell and dumbbell after every single set. We have been in the sweat business for a long time, hand sanitiser in our gyms has been standard for 12 years, not 12 weeks. As an industry we have not been consulted, advised or considered. I hope that someone in government gets to read this and at least reach out for an open discussion. I am here for every gym owner, personal trainer and family business that has been decimated by this blatant and now targeted ignorance.

13.01.2022 My heart is breaking after hearing yesterday’s news that the lockdown here in Melbourne will be going on for longer than expected. 12.01.2022 This is as much a reminder to me as it is to you, that our thoughts are often not reality (the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali teach us this), that people’s perception and judgement towards you reflects just as much on them as it does towards you. No one I know of is liked by everyone. Many people who are considered successful don’t consider themselves as successful. Just because one student/ client thinks you’re a great teacher, doesn’t mean the next student will too and that’s ok.... I don’t believe in universal alignment in yoga as I have an understanding of human variation but many many yoga teachers would disagree with me and that’s ok, they have every right to just as I have a right to disagree with them. I’ve trained with several world renowned yoga teachers who I highly respect, it doesn’t mean I agree with all they have to teach and that’s ok, I pick what resonates with me as I have this right. One of these teachers had a student walk out on their training (I was shocked beyond belief as I thought everyone loved this teacher), does this mean this teacher is a failure? No! This teacher will only feel this way if he/she gives them permission. I’ve often felt like a failure in life, this is due to complex childhood trauma, and I’m learning to not give them permission (yes I’m human I still have these thoughts but they are diminishing over time). 10.01.2022 The most advanced #yogi in a #hathayoga class isn’t necessarily the one practicing the fancy poses, it is the yogi who stays the most mindful, is conscious of every breath during class. When I go to a class, this is my goal, to be #mindful and what I look for in a teacher is one who who encourages this through wording and inspiration, which leads me to feeling #sattvic centred #peaceful after class. I don’t expect a fancy sequence or a workshop, this is what’s important to me, mindful movement #saucha to lead to #mentalhealth #cleopatrapose #yogaismorethanasana #dharana #pratyahara #yogajourney #vinyasaflow

07.01.2022 The problem with most human anatomy books, is that they show an ‘average’ skeleton which leads people to believe that we are all the same on the inside and all have the same abilities, strengths and weaknesses and if you can’t achieve a yoga pose to keep working on it as you just need to stretch more or get stronger. Unfortunately this won’t always work. These two #lumbarvertebrae are pictures of real human specimens generously made public by #paulgrilley to demonstrate #huma...nvariation No two human skeletons are the same. The shape (ie Limacon versus ovoid shape discs) and size matters and can determine if your spine tolerates sit ups well, bares compressive load, does better with yoga, the rom of side bend (lateral flexion) backbend (spinal extension), forward bend (spinal flexion) and twisting capability. Here you can see that the gaps between the spinous processes are different. The one on the left has more space between and greater back bending ability. Please note yoga didn’t create this, they were born this way and you can’t change the shape of your bones to make yourself more flexible. If you feel pressure in your back during a backbend (ie bow pose, wheel, camel) it could very possibly be the spinous processes kissing and causing compression. If you keep pressing against this and ignore the pain, this is very possibly when injury could occur. For more bone pictures go to: paulgrilley.com/bone-photos and I highly recommend the book Your Spine Your Yoga by Bernie Clark (edited by Dr Timothy McCall and consulted with on by Dr Stuart McGill). #yourspineyouryoga #yourbodyyouryoga #functionalyoga #functionoveraesthetics #paulgrilleyyinyoga #paulgrilleymethod #skeletalvariation See more

04.01.2022 The #yogasutrasofpatanjali only mention #yogaposes #asana once that is to say that yoga poses should be #steady #sthira and comfortable #sukha My studies with @powerlivingeducation have emphasized the importance of this #yogasutra and rightly so. ‘The modern yoga world is definitely too much Sthira. It’s about too much flexibilit, glorifying poses, and there’s not enough focus on meditating in your poses. Especially when we are doing handstands and crows, we don’t even consi...der meditating in handstand! But the original purpose was so we could sit in meditation. The sutra after this explains that when you have a proper balance of Sthira and Sukha they balance each other out so that you can meditate in the pose as there’s no discomfort in the asana. Because the modern yoga world has a large focus on exercise it’s too much Sthira and the reason we do asana to help meditate and calm the mind is slowly being lost.’ Duncan Peak #yogaeverydamnday #yogajourney #sthirasukhamasanam #yogaismorethanasana #200houryogateachertraining #powerlivingyoga See more

01.01.2022 #frogpose Primary target area: Muscles: groin #adductors joint: hips (flexion and abduction) secondary: spine The position of the feet will either help and or hinder you in stressing the target area! So why only give students option 3? The hips are externally rotated in option 1& 2 and internally rotated in option 3. For me option 1 Tadpole works best which is really a really wide childs pose! Option 3 may actually injury me if i did this often and all I feel here is compres...sion in the outer hip from the head of the femur hitting the acetabulum ( #hipjoint) nothing in my groin at all! A lot of students hit bone and bone compression in this pose so they may need #dragonfly or #butterfly instead. When the hips are in line with the knees gravity has the maximum effect, so to reduce this move the hips foreward or to avoid painful compression. #yinspiration #yinsights #yinster #yinstagram #yinyang #yogaeverydamnday See more
