23.01.2022 As part of YA’s commitment to reconciliation and reciprocity with the First Nations peoples of Australia, we are committed to recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dates of significance. Yoga Australia invites all Australian yoga teachers to take time for reflection today on the privilege to be part of such a diverse, multifaceted, multicultural nation and connect with the Country on which you live and practice yoga. We also invite you to connect with or reach out... to any First Nation's people you know who may find this a difficult day. We acknowledge that despite the injustices experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, both past and present, the traditional peoples of this continent have continued with resilience and are working with compassion towards reconciliation and reciprocity. As Australians, when we celebrate this oldest continuing culture, it is a reason for all of us to be proud. We hope you are able to stand with us today, barefoot, connecting to Country and paying our deep respect to this earth on which we stand, and on which we practice yoga, in the deepest act of reciprocity and mutual healing.

21.01.2022 Seeking Research Participants! (targeting men) Have you been practicing yoga at least once a week for 3 months before the COVID-19 government restrictions was implemented? USQ researcher, Jonathan Cagas, is inviting men and women who have been practicing yoga even before the COVID-19 lockdown to fill out an online survey (20-30 minutes). ... Please click the link to access the survey: https://surveys.usq.edu.au/index.php/123496?lang=en The study aims to identify the most important motives for yoga participation among adults and to explore whether motives may be related to practice and personal characteristics. This study contributes to Jonathan’s PhD, which is focused on understanding the barriers and facilitators for yoga participation among men. If you have any questions, please contact: [email protected]. We appreciate your time in helping Jonathan with this research project. Thank you very much. (This project has been approved by the University of Southern Queensland's Human Research Ethics Committee - Approval No. H20REA109.)

13.01.2022 On Sunday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews detailed changes to Victoria’s COVID-19 restrictions. In a nutshell, there is little that has changed in terms of Yoga. Yoga Australia has been in touch with the Government on Monday to clarify when Melbourne Yoga Studios will be able to film from their studios and also to seek guidance as to when it is likely Victorians will be able to re-open indoor yoga classes. We await a response from the Victorian State Government. During ongo...ing communications with the Victorian Government we continue to advocate: - For consideration independently of gyms - To emphasise the low-risk nature and positive benefits of Yoga - To emphasise the inherently small class sizes in many studios and the generally lower levels of exertion compared to other types of personal training - That equipment can be BYO and that there is less touching of surfaces and equipment than in other environments - That risk is minimised by appropriate adherence to Government guidance and the YA guidelines for re-opening, and - For the resumption of Yoga Therapy. In the meantime, we encourage you all to have your Covid-safe plans in place in preparation for reopening when the time comes

08.01.2022 A Link Between Metabolic Syndrome and PCOS There is a link between metabolic syndrome (MS) and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). MS is a collection of risk factors including: insulin resistance (IR), high blood pressure, obesity and dyslipidaemia. These factors increase the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and PCOS. Often students are not even aware that they have MS or IR, yet they come to their yoga teacher or yoga therapist sharing their distress ...about symptoms they are experiencing such as fatigue, pelvic pain, inability to lose weight, facial hair growth and that they are having trouble conceiving. An interesting abstract in the International Journal of Yoga in 2016 (1) concluded that because the pranayama technique Kapalabhati had been shown to effectively target and combat features of MS that it might be useful to conduct larger scale research to assess its usefulness in the treatment of the symptoms of PCOS. Whilst it would be advisable to be cautious with acute symptoms of pelvic pain, Kapalabhati could be worth considering as a practice when our students with PCOS are free of any acute pelvic pain. Qualified Yoga Therapists would be able to determine if this practice is suitable or not for an individual student.

03.01.2022 Want to help your students with managing the pain and symptoms of PCOS? Yoga and Yoga Therapy are effective interventions for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Through reducing stress reactions and improving neuroendocrine function yoga can assist students with pain relief and the associated stress from the symptoms of PCOS. (1) The practice of yoga postures, mindfulness and meditation, as well as breath focused practices can help our students who are feeling exhausted and ov...erwhelmed by this condition. PCOS is a common disorder that affects about 20% of women. However, this condition is often underdiagnosed so it is important to get a correct diagnosis. It affects the menstrual cycle and can often affect fertility. Some of the signs and symptoms of PCOS are: irregular or absent menstrual cycle, acne, excess body and facial hair, hair loss, heavy menstrual bleeding, weight issues, headaches, pelvic pain, poor sleep, blood sugar dysregulation and fatigue. The cause is unknown however family history, stress, and insulin resistance are common factors. Yoga can be effective at assisting students to deal with pain, anxiety and stress associated with PCOS. One recent study demonstrated that 3 sessions a week of mindful yoga practice reduced free testosterone levels which might help reduce excessive hair growth and acne, as well as reduced their anxiety scores (2). Feel confident that yoga practices can provide therapeutic benefit to our students with PCOS.

02.01.2022 As you are no doubt aware, the re-opening roadmaps have now been released for Victorians. We understand that the long path to re-opening studios and returning to face to face teaching, as it was laid out on Sunday, is a blow for our Victorian members and small businesses that are already doing it tough. The situation in Regional Victoria is especially difficult. The efforts the yoga community have made to adapt to this crisis right from the start have been amazing and the s...pirit with which you have met each challenge as it arises, inspiring. We have seen tremendous transformation in your business models and such a strong commitment to your communities...to our community. Thank-you. But we know it is not easy and for our Victorian members particularly, you are in our hearts and minds right now. I have no doubt that Victorians are all going through an adjustment process just now. This is raw and challenging. But the Yoga Australia community is here with you. We will be doing all we can behind the scenes to continue to advocate for you. We will continue to voice your concerns directly to the Government; such as the difficulty many of you have reported with failing to qualify for the Business Support Fund and the challenges of not being able to record video from your studios. And, we will also continue to work closely with, and through, Fitness Australia, who have been a great support to us throughout. In terms of ongoing support, we will continue our forums and our calls to members, along with regular updates to the website and connecting with you through our social feeds. We will also be running a special Zoom forum next week dedicated to our Victorian teachers. Our goal here, as always, is to look for how we can best support you through this process, with practical advice, information and opportunities to connect, with each other and with us. Please reach out if we can support you, our team is here to listen. With all our love, Yoga Australia
