I am starting the new year with the decision to close my social media accounts. The request to meet on a regular basis in a similar space has come directly from my students. I'm not quite clear how this group will evolve, but I am open and willing to explore this new beginning. This monthly offering is an opportunity to do all those practices that we don't get the time to explore in regular studio yoga asana classes. We are a small group that are still getting to know each other 'spiritually' and the group is open to anyone who wants to learn more about non-dual Tantrik teachings and practices. 22.01.2022 It’s not uncommon that as therapists we often reach an impasse with some clients in their therapeutic journey. We often fall into the perspective that the client is being ‘resistant’ and as therapists, we personally experience the transference of this ‘resistance’ as ‘stuckness’. In my experience, one way of moving through the ‘resistance’ or ‘stuckness’ is to reframe the understanding of our client’s experience as a protective mechanism- it’s what they need to do to look aft...er themselves so they don’t go into overwhelm. This overwhelm is almost always related to being on the edge of processing a difficult memory or emotion....almost always, the emotion is related to shame, fear, guilt or vulnerability. The visceral experience of these emotions is almost too much to bear- they don’t want to connect with them, so it makes sense for them to stay away. 17.01.2022 An essential skill for teaching yoga and providing cues for students is learning how to observe. There are so many verbal cues and adjustments that can be given simply by looking at a student. Learning what to look for comes both through refining your observational skills as well as personally embodying the practices yourself. There are many physical, mental and emotional shifts that we traverse to make space for this new little life. Later stages of pregnancy requires lots of rest and restoration, to counterbalance the influx or hormones, tiredness and heaviness of the uterus, which puts pressure on the lower back and pelvic ...floor. Supper supported savasana is a great tonic. One of my current yoga teachers' in training is entering mothethood. 12.01.2022 I'm thankful that I will be able to provide this beginners course again in person...woohoo....starts this coming Thursday!!!! The class limit is 7 students, so if you're feeling ready for human contact yoga classes (remember those), please join me and others. You have to bring your own yoga equipment though. I want to particularly mention that I welcome anyone who is using some body movement for trauma recovery. I'm a counsellor and have been doing a lot of trauma over the p...ast few years, always bringing in somatic perspectives into the work. I am also a registered NDIS provider and do lot's of one-on-one yoga for people with trauma histories, depression and anxiety. You could use your NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) funding for this course. creating safety is at the forefront of my work. 12.01.2022 Part of the trauma processing work that I support clients through in therapy sessions involves helping people understand the difference between feelings and emotions. Feelings are mental associations and reactions that arise from thoughts. Some times these thoughts are in our conscious or subconscious awareness. Feelings are subjective because they are influenced by our own personal experiences, memories and beliefs unique to us. Emotions on the other hand are biochemical rea...ctions associated with the nervous system, usually triggered by neurophysiological changes associated with feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Emotions are generally universally experienced. Helping people understand that our emotions can be physically felt and held in our body as a result of trauma is part of the processing work. That’s why I find it important to draw on the wisdom of both psychotherapy and somatic therapy when supporting clients manage the often unmanageable emotions, feelings and sensations. A powerful mantra to be repeating and contemplating in meditation as well as throughout our day through second attention- (a powerful practice I have learnt through my teacher Dharma Bodhi). 03.01.2022 Ever since deciding to be a yoga teacher twenty years ago, I have been extremely lucky to have had two of the most generous and giving asana and pranayama teachers. A big heart of gratitude to Tony Rothberg of Bridge Yoga and Mark Gibson of Doutta Galla Yoga. I want to also mention my current spiritual teacher Dharma Bodhi and eventhough I don't consider him my teacher, it would be remiss of me not to mention Christopher Wallis and the bountiful learnings I have received fro...m his generosity of spreading the beautiful teachings of non-dual Tantra. 02.01.2022 This little balancing sequence is a gem for helping people regulate emotional and physiological overwhelm. I use this one alot in both my one on one yoga session for people wanting body based practices for managing trauma/anxiety/ depression, and I use it with people in counselling/psychotherapy as a resource to regulate their nervous system when processing difficult emotion/memories. Balancing your body grounds you in present moment awareness, coordinating the arms and legs..., increases your focus, all whilst encouraging nose breathing, takes you out of the past. Moving between talking and somatic work is good for recalibrating the nervous system. Then changing the balance to the non dominant leg is even harder...see how I struggled? Sometimes I hold people's hands as we do it together, increasing interpersonal connection, which is so vital for recalibrating th NS. Balancing is a good go to tool when people dissociate.
