18.01.2022 Hello Yoga Friends, Let's practice some Yogic philosophy by focusing on the Yamas. The Yamas are considered codes of restraint and self regulation and involve our relationship with the world and other people. Ahimsa is the first of 5 Yamas. Ahimsa means practicing non-violence, non-harming to any living creature. Consideration and attention to others. Maybe we can also throw in some Seva, selfless service, as well. Namaste. Nicky

11.01.2022 Hi Yoga Friends, Holloways Yoga will be closing for 4 weeks from Monday 23rd of March. Classes and our Meditation session will run as usual until then. I will post a short video each week which you can use to practise your Yoga at home. In the meantime please be kind to each other. There will be many people unable to work and will no doubt be struggling financially and emotionally. There are also many people coming back from overseas and in isolation for 2 weeks and of cours...e those who become unwell. This is a time of great uncertainty but also a time where we can show our true nature through empathy and support towards others. Shanti Namaste. Nicky See more

10.01.2022 Trying to practise Yoga at home? Make a nice little space for your Yoga mat and read on for some handy hints. How to start: When we practise Yoga Asana at home there is a ‘starting point’ where we begin. At this point we should have a good understanding of our physical constitution so we can develop our practice according to our individual abilities and needs. Everyone’s home practice will be different. ... Setting Goals: To begin with we need to set a goal. What do we want to achieve from our home practice? Our home practice will be developed according to that goal. How many times per week can we set aside for our Yoga practice and how long will each session be? Time Management: We all have busy lives and often try to fit far more into our day than we can hope to accomplish. We need to be realistic about what is going to work for us in the long term. Our yoga practice needs to be sustainable or it will not continue and the long term benefits of regular practice will not be experienced. Some basic understandings to assist in developing a successful home practice: 1. Plan you practice beforeIt should include loosening postures to begin with, followed by energising postures such as standing asanas, inversions towards the end and finish with gently seated and relaxing postures. 2. You know in advance when you will be practising asana so make sure you haven’t eaten a large meal beforehand and have recently used the bathroom. 3. Take care with asana practice and don’t overdo it.. Use counter poses such as balasana (child's pose) and uttanasana (forward bend) to return the body to its normal condition between postures. (use props-cushions, chairs, bolsters) 4. Rest between postures if required. A Yoga asana session is not the same as a gym workout where you have to push yourself to the limits of you strength and endurance. Never go 100% work at 80% of your limit. We work with the body in asana. 5. Try to include at least 5-10 minutes of savasana (corpse pose) at the end of the asana practice to ensure the body is ready to continue with daily activities. 6. Try to include some meditation practice even if it is only a few minutes. Meditation is like anything elsethe more we practice the better we get Most importantly ENJOY your yoga practice.. It shouldn’t be an exercise routine, but rather an enjoyable and uplifting part of your day.

09.01.2022 If you are feeling more stressed and anxious at the moment try this simple technique at home, or better still in a natural environment, to calm the mind. Sit and breathe - take 5 minutes to sit in a quiet place and focus on the breath. Notice the air flowing inwards and outwards. It's normal to get distracted by the thoughts, just notice the distraction and bring your mind back to the breathe. To help keep your focus you can repeat a silent mantra, ... 'So Hum'. 'So' as you inhale and 'Hum' as you exhale. Using the mantra helps to focus and calm the mind. Connecting with the breath connects us with the natural world around us. We are a part of our natural environment. See more

03.01.2022 Hi Yoga Friends, Our Yoga clients' health is our priority at Holloways Yoga Studio. We are currently cleaning mats and props after each class, wiping down all surfaces and have provided anti bacterial hand wash in our bathroom. You can help by washing your hands before class, bringing your own mat if you have one and your own water bottle/cup which you can refill if required. Please stay at home if you are feeling unwell. Namaste. Nicky
