20.01.2022 Time and again I receive an apology from my students for 'not performing' well in class or not 'bringing their best version of themselves' on the mat. This saddens me. As often as possible, I remind my students not to judge their practice, to practice self-acceptance and not allow the voice of their ego to be louder than what their body is trying to say. Please be kind to yourself, on and off the mat. Sometimes, the body doesn't cooperate. And it's okay. ... Now I'm not saying to be lazy on the mat or not to challenge yourself. If you do that, you won't grow. Know the difference between putting in effort and hurting yourself. Know the difference between when your mind is coming up with tall tales and when the body is actually protesting. 18.01.2022 Namaste fellow Yogis, Research is showing that the Coronavirus is highly contagious and can spread even if you are asymptomatic. I feel that social isolation is definitely one of the solutions to contain this contagion. In an effort to protect my community, my Yoga family and my family, I have decided to stop running classes from Mount Waverley. Instead, I will be running live online classes at your usual class time. This will give me an opportunity to teach you, guide and c...orrect you individually while you are in the privacy and safety of your home. All you would need is mat space, a mat and a device. If you have young children, please encourage your partner to look after them for an hour. And if your children are absolutely non-compliant, then of course they can join in. Details of your online class start date and other information will be given in the next few days. I totally understand that it will not be the same. Coming to an environment that is conducive to doing Yoga, doing Yoga with others in the same room and that group energy of the meditation is way more appealing. I also understand that some of us come to class to get away from our current environment/energy in order to regroup and re-energise, but I feel that under the circumstances, this is better than nothing. At this stage I'm still working out the platform I'll be using to conduct the classes and some other details. I'm open to suggestions if you have any. I'm new to this and would love to hear from you. Classes from Mount Waverley will restart once all this is over. I strongly feel that this current pandemic environment is nature's way of telling us to slow down and go within. I also believe that this will pass as quickly as it has arrived. Turning this unpleasantness into a positive is the only way forward. 17.01.2022 I've always given shoulder asanas a lot of emphasis in all my classes, irrespective of whether the class is Hatha, Vinyasa, beginner or intermediate level. With most of us working from home now and spending long hours at a desk that may not be ergonomic, the shoulder asanas have become even more relevant. Those that we practice together in class are very effective, but are even more so if done a few times a day. 17.01.2022 This is for those of you who would like to understand the science behind the Pranayama (breathing techniques) that we do in class The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the body's rest and digestion response. The vagus nerve is connected to the parasympathetic nervous system, which means that stimulating it can help in creating a state of calm and relaxation. Since the vagus nerve fibres pass through the diaphragm, deep diaphragmatic breathing stimulates it, which is why the Pranayama is so beneficial. (The picture corresponding to this post is an old one, of my corporate students doing Pranayama in a meeting room. I miss those days)

16.01.2022 My hour-long walk in the morning has become my favourite part of the day. It's my time in silence and isolation (my house is full of people, albeit everyone is locked in their respective rooms). I utilize this time to do my praying and Vedic Chanting (Siva Ashtottra, Hanuman Chalisa and Dhanvantari Mantra). I organise my thoughts, set mini-goals and plan my day. 14.01.2022 I'm not too keen for my students to watch and learn. That only really works in the first few classes if you are an absolute beginner, or if you are learning a new pose. Otherwise, if you are constantly spending your class time watching your teacher, then how will you pay attention to yourself? Listening and practicing helps you draw your attention within. It heightens your awareness and forces you to be in the present moment, which really is the primary objective of doing Yoga.

A few concerns have been brought to my attention in the last few days. I have addressed them the best I can : - "I haven't got a device at home." You do. Your phone is your device.... - "I'm not very good with technology. I don't know how I'll log in." You don't need to be good with technology. I will send you a link. All you have to do is click on the link and follow the prompts. If you are really hesitant, ask your children, partner, colleague to help you. Or call me. Besides, this is an opportunity to learn something new. - "I have a tiny apartment and too many family members." Your kitchen floor will do. If you are in a restorative class, your bed will do. - "My kids won't let me be." I understand, I've been there too. Ask your partner to keep them occupied for a while. If that's not possible, they can join in. - "Its too noisy in my house, it will disrupt everyone in the class." You will have the option of switching your audio off. This means that you can hear me, but no one will hear your background. - "Money is tight at the moment." Well, your online classes are at 50% off. 10.01.2022 As we age, we lose our flexibility rapidly. Dedicating our energies solely in strengthening our muscles then becomes inefficient. In Yoga, muscles and fascia are lengthened, and knots and blocked energy are released. As a result, a full range of movement in your limbs is restored. In addition, there is of course plenty of emphasis on strengthening. When the body feels supple and free, it automatically has an impact on the mind. 09.01.2022 It's almost impossible to complete a pose by simply looking like it. For example, there is much more to the arms in eagle pose than just wrapping them in a knot-like position. Lifting the elbows up to shoulder level, rolling the shoulders back, pulling the elbows away, keeping the ribcage neutral, keeping the breath steady and the mind present are all essential aspects of the asana. 08.01.2022 What a year! It has been full of surprises, challenges, heartbreaking moments and opportunities. In hindsight, that would be any year, except that 2020 felt a bit extreme. Although 2020 brought some emotionally distressing moments, it also brought plenty of joyful moments and opportunities. For years I had been complaining about spending too much time running an Uber service for my children, shipping them to and from school and their million other extracurricular activities.... That, plus running a household, teaching several studio and corporate classes every day and keeping up with my practice was slowly tiring me. If only I could just teach and practice and not do so much of the rest. 2020 granted me that wish. This year I've also had the opportunity to change the name of my business, have a new website and an online booking system. I've introduced a new class, 'Morning Flow', which had been brewing in my mind for a while and is now secretly my favourite class to teach. 2020 also gave me the opportunity to connect with students both interstate and internationally, some new and some old. I've also had the opportunity to do a few courses and learn new Vedic Mantras. Plus, I'm pretty sure that you know about my latest passion, my beloved vegie patch. Then there is Kirby, my neighbour's dog who is now my best friend. I'm very sure you know about her too. All these wonderful changes have only been possible because you had my back, my beautiful Yogis. Complicated poses that just look good and for which you need to be hyper-mobile don't appeal to me.
