21.01.2022 Benefits of Yoga for Tweens and Teens... Each day this week I'll post one benefit of Yoga for older children. 5. PHYSICAL BENEFITS-INCREASED COORDINATION, STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY, INCREASED LEVELS OF NEUROTRANSMITTER GABA... The Yoga postures, interactive games, team activities and stretching build flexibility and muscle strength. Tweens and teens begin to understand how movement can help them feel energised and positive. The term is structured to progressively build up to more advanced postures. We do postures that build muscle strength and flexibility needed for the more advanced postures as each week goes on. The exercise we do increases positive feelings and energises. At a biological level, when we do Yoga we're increasing GABA and endorphins. GABA is a neurotransmitter that we need good levels of to feel calm and worry-free. Studies show that the more Yoga you do, the more GABA increases!

21.01.2022 Over the last week, I've written each day about the benefits of Yoga for Tweens and Teens. In fact most of these benefits apply to adults too, and many of them to younger children. I'd love to know...... If you or your child has done regular Yoga (with me, online or elsewhere), Have you seen any of these benefits become evident in your child or you? Did I miss any other benefits that you've noticed in yourself or your child? There are definitely more benefits I didn't mention but I listed the ones I thought were most important. Please let me know! 1. Relaxation of the body and mind 2. Self confidence and self-esteem 3. Creativity and social skills 4. Reduction in stress and anxiety 5. 17.01.2022 Thank you for tuning in to our Yoga brain breaks. I've got one child returning to school on Monday so we won't be doing regular brain breaks at this time. One child is still at home for two more weeks so we may get around to posting something, but it won't be regular. I've loved sharing Yoga with your children during this time. I've also loved it when my children joined in and shared their ideas for what to do, and allowed me to direct them in breathing and meditation practic...es. One of the main reasons I started teaching children's yoga was to help my own children by giving them techniques to deal with life's challenges, because Yoga and meditation have helped me in this way. I also love sharing it with others as I believe the younger you start, the more second nature these life skills become. 16.01.2022 **What makes you stand out?** In our "Be You" workshop we learn about the differing strengths and abilities of each individual. No two people are the same, and each person has their own strengths and challenges. Each person is naturally stronger in different specific areas.... We encourage children to identify their strengths and understand that focusing on them can lead to higher levels of happiness and wellbeing. If there are other areas they want to be strong in, we encourage children to work hard at whatever it is too, to get better!
15.01.2022 Nature helps us feel positive, rain or shine! Our family is planning lots of time in nature over the next few weeks, starting with a few days at the beach, staying right next to a lagoon. Followed by bush walks and swimming in the reservoir. Even in this rain we've been having, it feels great to get outside and feel the cool raindrops on my skin.... I hope you get the chance to schedule in some nature time with your family too.
14.01.2022 See you later Tween and Teen Yogis! For the next few weeks, we'll be working on building healthy spines to improve how we look with good posture, and how we feel when we stand tall. We'll be doing meridian-based exercises to target the areas associated with back health (physical), confidence (mental) and calm (emotional).... Optional homework will be sent out each week to help students keep up their practice at home (if they choose to). Homework will consist of a short YouTube video. The more we practice, the easier it will be to cultivate confidence and calm. See you at 5pm!

12.01.2022 Benefits of Yoga for tweens and teens. Every day this week I'll post one benefit of Yoga for older children. 7. SELF-AWARENESS & MIND-BODY CONNECTION In Tween-Teen Yoga, we use mindfulness to observe our thoughts and emotions in the present moment. When the children observe, they start to develop awareness that their thoughts are just thoughts. They learn that sometimes their thoughts are unhelpful or unkind (to themselves) and can make them feel a certain way.... By using mindfulness in this way, the children develop self-awareness and their mind-body connection. Once they are more aware about how certain thoughts are making them feel, they are open to learning to be kinder and more compassionate to themselves. We also explore how to use certain practices to help us change the way we feel. For example, we could use an Ayurvedic self-massage to our feet, Legs Up the Wall posture, and long out breaths to help us relax before bedtime.

12.01.2022 Teaching young people to recognise and celebrate their own unique strengths is one of our focuses. Understanding our personal abilities and identity helps us feel more confident. When we feel confident in our own skin there's less of a need to compare ourselves with others.

11.01.2022 In Tween and Teen Yoga today we talked about how sometimes when we're feeling stressed, we might judge ourselves, about whatever's happened that's caused us to be in that state. We also talked about how this is ok. After all, it's only human to do this! But how could we take more notice of what we're saying to ourselves, and what could we do instead that's kinder? This group is very insightful. Everyone was aware of their personal signs they experience when stress is beginni...ng to build, as well as ways they can help themselves feel less stressed, and what they could say to themselves that's more compassionate. Being aware of your internal state is one of the benefits of Yoga. To be aware is to be mindful. ...and it culminated in everyone wrapping themselves in Yoga mats! A great way to reduce stress.

09.01.2022 In our classes, we guide children and teens to discover go-to 'stress relief strategies', that work for them individually. In the last few classes of Term 4, we brainstormed ideas for: What brings me joy What helps me relax... Individuals were encouraged to make each of these things part of their daily routine during the holidays. Just 5 minutes daily of each activity is enough. If your child attended these classes, now's a good time to check in with them to ask if they've been doing something daily to bring joy and to relax. No need to worry if they haven't...it's not too late to start now!

03.01.2022 Hello, My name's Siobhan and "Yogajoeys" is my baby. This page has mostly been about my children's and teens' Yoga classes, and you may not know but I teach classes for grown ups too! Since 2015, I've taught adult classes at various places: -YogaPlusPhysio, The Gap... -Mount St. Michael's school -Ritual HQ, The Gap and Everton Hills -Relax Yoga, Chermside As of a few weeks ago I also teach online and I'm opening up my Thursday night classes to anyone who'd like to join us on Zoom. My adult classes are based on Hatha/Vinyasa and I include some meridian-based therapeutic Yoga exercises that bring the systems of the body to balance. You'll feel that you've worked in this class, and by the end you'll be so relaxed that you'll be able to roll straight into bed. If you'd like to join me, please get in touch.
