24.01.2022 Small Mindful Moments & Self-Compassion It can seem such a tiny thing on its own, but each little moment we notice and tune in to ourselves can add up. Feeling the sun on our face, a few mindful breaths or savouring that coffee/tea. Small deposits filling our own often depleted cups. Heres one of my recent moments below on the walk back from school drop off ... This also came after a morning of hearing myself say things like Oh my goodness does it really take 20 mins to put one sock on?! Lots of mindful breathing required...among other things! On the difficult days it might look more like this: - Mindfully noticing when we are struggling, This is a moment of struggle - Realise our common humanity. We are all imperfect and struggle at times - Offering words of kindness or self compassion to ourselves. Think about how you would offer words of support or compassion to a friend or a child and offer the same to you. You deserve it! #mindfulmoments #selfcompassion

24.01.2022 Such a lovely little graphic about the power of being ‘contagious with our calm’ as a parent. In the Circle of Security (CoS) literature this is referred to as BEING WITH children in their stormy emotions which has the benefit of supporting CO-REGULATION The good news from research? ... The practice of co-regulation, (the shared management of feelings) allows emotions to become safe and supports the child’s ability to manage them on their own in the future. How often is this BEING WITH experience required for raising securely attached kids? The CoS research suggests using this approach 30% of the time is enough to meet a child’s emotional needs and support the development of self regulation. What else can I do if I’m interested in this idea of CO-REGULATION? Put the oxygen mask on yourself FIRST! Tuning in to your own emotional state, taking a breath when you feel yourself becoming stormy, grounding yourself in the present moment before trying to help kids to regulate. Lastly, attending to our own CARE NEEDS is incredibly beneficial for us and our kids and is great modelling too!

20.01.2022 We spend all of our lives inside our own head, so its important to try and make it a nice place to be. "Self-talk is your inner voice and the hard part about self-talk is that it feels true, even when its biased or incorrect". Being aware of the quality of our self talk. Whether it is harsh or kind is often the first step in being able to challenge it, particularly if it is negatively impacting on how we feel about ourselves. ... 16.01.2022 Happy World Kindness Day Beautiful Peeps! You are AWESOME!!! P.s Pass it on!

15.01.2022 Those little moments when you step into your truth. Follow your heart, tune in to what lights you up. Keep your eyes and heart open for those little moments. These are the things of sustained joy, purpose, working towards our true essence. I’ve had a few of these in my life. The most recent was deciding in my early 40’s to start my yoga teacher training and see what this could become. ... I’ll be honest there was a little voice inside me that whispered things like ‘maybe you’re too old’, ‘you’re not flexible enough’ etc etc. And for most of us there will always be some form of ‘you’re not X enough’. But that’s where it’s our job to really listen, to be courageous. Our life’s work (& I find what often brings people to therapy) is to work towards defining a solid sense of self. I wish you well in stepping into your dharma/ following your path and just generally ‘Doing More of That!’ Tiny Buddha

15.01.2022 ‘The body is your only home in the universe. It is your house of belonging here in the world. It is a very sacred temple.... To spend time in solitude before the mystery of your body brings you towards wisdom’ A beautiful reminder courtesy of the poet John O’Donohue

14.01.2022 You may have heard the quote anxiety is contagious, but so is calm. We can all probably relate to the emotional experience of being in the company of someone who is anxious or stressed and experiencing similar feelings in ourselves. Almost like we have caught their emotional state. It is a function of families that we are wired for connection and the by product is that we can sometimes feel as if we are all under the same emotional skin to quote Murray Bowen (Famil...y Systems Theory) The good news is we are also capable of co-regulation. The ability to soothe another with our calm. The way a baby can be soothed by the presence of a calm and connected adult. How do we flip the switch? It usually starts with NOTICING what is happening in our own bodies. What is our nervous system trying to tell us? Tuning in to this state gives us the signal that it is time to notice the quality of our breath, where the tension is in our bodies. Just taking a few minutes of mindful attunement to breath can sometimes be enough to activate our own ability to regulate, to ground ourselves in the present and reconnect our thinking brains. Practice taking 5-6 mindful breaths next time you notice yourself getting caught up in others distress and see how it might impact your ability to be contagious with your calm

14.01.2022 A brand NEW offering I am experimenting with and would love your help to spread the word! This workshop has been developed with teens (12 - 18 years) in mind. I was inspired to offer it from my experience as both a child and adolescent therapist and yoga teacher. The teen years are a time for young people to negotiate the very normal and real struggle towards independence and defining identity. Having some tools in the box can be helpful to support them at times of ch...allenge. This workshop will provide a space for teens to tune in to their inner experience, to practice some self soothing skills (eg. diaphragmatic breathing and mindfulness) in a supported environment. There will be time during the workshop to discuss and reflect on the various practices and experience for each participant. As such numbers will be strictly limited to 6. Please feel free to share with family, friends and teens who may be interested to explore the benefits of mindfulness and yin yoga

07.01.2022 Wonderful graphic of what good therapy can offer

07.01.2022 It's taken me a while to get my head around writing an end of year of year post as I've grappled with something that feels appropriate to the journey of 2020. And truly there are no words I could write that I feel would do justice to it. So I thought I would share the quote that has most stayed with me this year. That I've turned over in my mind, as I too have longed for a return to 'normal'. To find a semblance of stability, familiarity, certainty in a year that has thr...own so much adversity and challenge our way. The longing for 'normal' is well..... completely normal!! It is a way for us to try and find our footing, connect with familiar touchstones, make sense of the senseless. 2020 has also thrown down the challenge to us to reconsider what aspects of 'normal' we choose to accept. To reconsider the status quo, the shape of our lives, the way we work, our relationships with each other and with our planet. To 'stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity and nature'. While we are still (and will always be) sitting with so much uncertainty, this is the challenge I will be choosing to take into 2021. Wishing you love, peace, some rest and moments of beautiful connection over the break. Michelle xx

03.01.2022 OM, AUM or What does it mean and why do we chant it? Om is a very simple sound with a complex meaning. It is the whole universe coalesced into a single word, representing the union of mind, body, and spirit that is at the heart of yoga.
