24.01.2022 Learning to surf the waves of life.... This little class of beauties aged between 7-10 getting curious in Warrior 2 (traditionally known as Virabhadrasana 2) What do we say to ourselves when things get tough? Yoga is NOT just about breathing and stretching. A key component of what makes this ancient and very relevant practice sooo different to other exercise is that we cultivate awareness of our mental stuff. Its never too early to start! ... #brisbanekids #brisbanecity #paddingtonbrisbane #kidsmindfulness #kidswellbeing #kidsbrisbane #kidsofinstagram #brisbaneyogi #brisbaneyogastudio #kidsyogabrisbane #kidsyogaaustralia #afterschoolprogram #brisbanekidsofficial #brisbanekidsactivities #brisbanekidsyoga #qldkids #qldschoolholidays #anxiouskids #resilientkids #kidsdoyoga See more

23.01.2022 The little people of Rosalie C&K really relished in our first Yoga class back post COVID lockdown. There was so much focus in the room today. I overheard one little fellow whisper to his friend oh I love this bit at the end where we get to rest and she touches our feet Me too little one, me too

22.01.2022 This quote by old Albert, is one of my all time faves. And it speaks beautifully to a topic that I am extremely passionate about, especially as an educator of children & teens. "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid" Albert Einstein It is my belief that EVERY single human being on this planet has an aptitude for something, and its all there in our unique blueprint. And some...times it takes us a little while to figure it out. And thats OK! We just have to keep trying things on for size, opening doors and then maybe closing them, and dipping our pinkie toe in to test the water. We have to keep sniffing lifes trail like bloodhounds, until one day, we uncover that thing that ignites a spark in us. The world would be a pretty heavy place if we were all elephants... #kidsyoga #brisbanekids #mindset #brisbaneyoga #mentoring #leadership

21.01.2022 Thanks to smiling science for this little beauty. It can be tempting to try and fix or cheer up a fellow teacher who might be struggling. Often, all that is required is simply a compassionate ear. Permission for them to feel whatever it is that they are feeling, so that they feel seen and heard. After all, isnt this what we want for our children? ... #teacherselfcare #covidteaching #covidteacher #catholiceducation #independantschoolsqld #stateschoolsqld #schoolcounselor #schoolsocialworker #school #teachersofinstagram #teachers #compassionateleadership #teachingfromhome #mentalwellbeingmatters #teachersfollowteachers #stressedout #listenmore

20.01.2022 Our yoga & personal development classes start this Tuesday afternoon for Term 4! PM me of you would like your child to trial a class before committing to the full term.

19.01.2022 If you want to go deeper and really understand the workings of the child & adolescent brain in a practical way, I highly recommend Dr Dan Siegels work. This was one of the first ever books I read on the topic 9 years ago & its still one of my faves

19.01.2022 When educators feel valued, they can serve from a place of love rather than one of duty & overwhelm. As a society we really need to take a good hard look at this. The fish swims from the head down. If we want the best for our children, we must ensure the best for our teachers & carers too. These two things are not seperate. It is the illusion of separation that causes many of the worlds problems, and this issue is no exception.

17.01.2022 The Yoga Seeds Vision

17.01.2022 Building resilience in our teen class in Vasisthasana, or a pose more commonly known in the west as side plank. Our bodies get wobbly and we shake, and we breath through the hard things and then come out of the pose stronger, both mentally and physically than ever before. Then, maybe when we find ourselves in a wobbly situation off the mat, we might be able to respond rather than react. This is why we practice yoga!

17.01.2022 This is my lifes work, or my Dharma as we call it in Yogic Philosophy. Educating the hearts of children & their parents, teachers and caregivers, so that our future is a kinder, more compassionate place for all #kidsyogabrisbane #kidsyoga #educationqld #brisbaneyoga

14.01.2022 I woke to the very sad news today, that one of my favourite teachers, and thought leaders in 21st century education, the late Sir Ken Robinson, had passed away over night. For those who have lived their entire lives comparing themselves to others and feeling like they never quite met the mark.... The Element by the late Sir Ken Robinson will change your life and the lives of those you reach, whether it be as a parent, educator or mentor. Every single human is born with ...a spark. Our job while we are here in the physical realm is to find it and get about lighting it, so we can light up the world. Thank you for lighting up our world Sir Ken Robinson. May you Rest In Peace. #sirkenrobinson #kenrobinson #educationdesign #educationalleadership #educateyourself #education #designthinkers #thoughtleader #thoughtleaders #thoughtleadership #everychildmatters #everychildisanartist #spark #igniteyourfire

13.01.2022 This is a lovely frame of reference in relation to the experience of anxiety. I wonder who else has spent their lives feeling like there was something inherently wrong with them? That there was a brokenness needing to be fixed? What if, like any feeling, we were able to normalise it? To educate ourselves and our children & students, so they understand it, and when they have developed the self awareness to know it for what it is, guide them through it with a set of tools... like yoga & meditation , so that rather than feeling disabled by it, they feel empowered? #emotionalintelligence #emotionaldevelopment #childdevelopment #brisbanemums #brisbanekids

13.01.2022 This article is a testament to why I am so passionate about the teaching of modern yoga in schools over mindfulness. Techniques for mindfulness alone are NOT the answer. There is a big trend towards this at the moment and the term mindfulness gets bandied around a lot, all with good intent of course. But when we are stressed, the physical tension that accumulates in our bodies stops us in our tracks. Just try meditating or being mindful when your your amygdala is firing..., heart racing, breath shallow and you are triggered into the flight, fight or freeze response. Its almost impossible. So in yoga, we MOVE and RELEASE the tension in our PHYSICAL body first, while focussing on one thing. The breath. Focussing on the breath in a measured way, calms the autonomic nervous system, so our children can then focus and absorb the information that they are actually there to learn. The very first time I remember experiencing this all over body calm & focus, was in a yoga class at drama school when I was 17. I was highly stressed, overwhelmed by expectations, exams, peer pressure & a turbulent home life. And then it happened. Almost as if by magic, in Warrior 2 pose, when my breathe was hard, and my legs were burning, and I was hating my teacher for keeping me there in that place, and then something gave way. An experience of peace like I had never felt before washed over me. I will never forget that feeling and it left such a profound impact on my life, which is why I teach young people today. I am just so grateful that we had a forward thinking movement teacher who introduced it to our cohort! 22 years on, and I dont know where I would be without it. Perhaps introducing a mindful movement program with breath work into the curriculum, could go a long way to reducing stress in children (and their teachers) and improving focus & attention and could just be the key to improving the learning outcomes we keep chasing? https://news.yale.edu//improve-students-mental-health-yale

11.01.2022 The science of G R A T I T I D E Gratitude doesn’t just FEEL good. Did you know, that making gratitude a HABIT, and practicing it regularly, has the ability to rewire your child’s brain in a positive way shaping their outlook to be more optimistic for life? Neuroscience proves that when we practice gratitude, we are LESS stressed, less anxious & happier in general. ... So, at the end of all of our yoga classes, for educators, mums or kids, we always finish with moment of gratitude. And at our house, around the dinner table at night, we make it a practice to share at least one thing that we are all grateful for in our day. It’s super easy and it often opens up discussions that we otherwise, would not have had. Taking time to be grateful and teaching kids to be grateful is just one of the wonderful ways a yoga practice helps kids (and adults!) to be happier. 10.01.2022 We believe that every child has a unique gift, but in order to uncover it, they must feel safe, supported and inspired to step out and experience new things without the fear of failure. Teaching children & adolescents practical skills that build self-awareness, resilience, self leadership and a positive inner story through Yoga, Meditation & Mindset is what we do! Our mission is to help every child shine their light bright , so they can experience the natural confidence that is built when they find their genius, ignite the spark and light up the world!

10.01.2022 How beautiful is this artwork of the human brain?

09.01.2022 Today, I had the pleasure of running a professional development workshop for C&K Kindergarten in QLD. This was their first day back of face to face PD since COVID lockdown, & it was jam packed full of training & protocol, but they made staff wellbeing a priority. This sentiment shared by Sydney Jensen, absolutely echoes what I heard this morning, and continue to hear time and time again. These educators, before the workshop, were in various states of exhaustion, anxiety & o...verwhelm. After a restorative yoga and a mindfulness breath work practice, they were calmer, clearer & ready for their day of collaboration in deep work with each other. Now, I recognise that its not always possible to carve an hour out of every workday to do this, however, if you are not aware of your natural state of ease both mentally & physically, how do you know when you are teetering on the edge, full of tension, highly stressed & in need of support? If we want the best for our children, we MUST invest in, and take the very best care of the teachers, caregivers & support staff that guide them. The future of education depends on it. #schoolleaders #wellbeing #mindfulness #resilience https://www.ted.com//sydney_jensen_how_can_we_supp/up-next

05.01.2022 Almost a weekly occurrence in our house Someone puts a bit of crust in the toaster, it starts smoking, the fire alarm goes off, and one of the kids dutifully grabs a tea towel and a stool to fan the smoke away from the roof with a casual roll of the eyes. The false smoke alarm is such a simple yet effective analogy when teaching children & teens and even adults about the function of anxiety. ... When you think a thought that starts to create anxiety, just roll your eyes, notice it for what it is, take a few deep breaths and blow the smoke away. #amygdala #anxietyawareness #teenmentalhealth #kidsmentalhealth #kidsmentalhealthmatters #kidsgetit #theearlierthebetter #kidsbraindevelopment #resilient

05.01.2022 As humans, we all crave heart centred, authentic connection. A place where we feel accepted for who we are, without the mask. These two little beauties met at my girls workshop on Monday and genuinely hit it off. Some would say kindred spirits. One of our roles as educators and caregivers is to help kids understand that there is a tribe where they belong, but sometimes it can take a little while to find it. These two cherubs certainly helped create that tribe on Monday. #findyourtribe #heartcentred #kindredspirits #kindredhearts #humanconnections #oxytocin #treepose #partneryoga #kidsyogaaustralia #yogaforkids #authenticself #authenticeducation #allweneedislove #kidsyogateacher #yogisofinstagram #kidsdoingyoga #yogachildren #handsoflove #loveiseverywhere #belonging

04.01.2022 Calm caregiver = calm kid. Now this might not be the case in EVERY single family, but its worth a try. Now, Id just like to preface this recommendation - I am not a Buddhist , nor do I identify with a particular religion, however this book Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali has helped me in more ways than I can express in a a single post. For any mother or caregiver, please, do yourself a favour and read it. The principles in it can be applied to anyone from any walk of life. 03.01.2022 Oxytocin Did you know, that apart from being the central attachment hormone when a mother gives birth to her baby, this magical little hormone also helps us to relax together when we physically connect within our social group, counteracting the effects of stress, anxiety and fear?? In our kindy classes, at the end of each session, we always reach out in community and give one another a gentle back rub with our kind hands as we sigh out gently through our mouths. ... Its a pretty nice way to end each class, topping up our oxytocin for the day. Its so important that in these times of physical distancing where cortisol levels are typically higher, we must make sure our kids (and us adults too!!) are getting enough gentle, physical contact so we are releasing plenty of oxytocin to help us cope with stress. Its absolutely essential for our mental and physical health as humans. #oxytocin #oxytocinboosting #physicaldistancing #humanconnections #healing #stressrelief #kindyyogabrisbane #kidsyogabrisbane #brisbanekids #stressless #kindy #brisbaneyogamum

03.01.2022 Anger Jealousy Shame How do these show up for you? Do you allow yourself to feel & express them? Or do you find yourself suppressing them, especially if in response to a moment we may have had with our own children or students in our class? Validating emotions is easier said than done. Teaching children & teens about big emotions starts with us as adults. Kids are always watching what we do and how we respond as caregivers & educators. The fish swims from the head down.... We need to learn how to do this in a healthy way as adults first & sometimes that means trudging into some murky water. Especially if you were raised in a culture or social group where this was frowned upon & where certain emotions may have been labelled good or bad. I try to remember when I am in it that all emotions are valid. And its helpful, when I start to notice their symptoms manifesting in my physical body, like stomach clenching, my breath shortening or jaw tightening, to name the emotion out loud & take a few deep breaths. The body gives us clues when we pay attention. Call emotions out for what they are and they start to lose their power. Our amygdala starts to chill out & we regain our awareness of the present moment so we can respond rather than react. Check out the link in my bio of Name it to tame it by Dr Daniel Siegel. Its absolute magic for us adults too #drdansiegel #emotionsmatter #amygdala #validation #nameittotameit #kidswellbeing #emotionalregulation #anger #jealousy #shame #brenebrowninspired #validateyourself #expressyourself #healthyemotions #allemotionswelcome #angrymom #brisbanemum #stressedmum

02.01.2022 Today is national Aboriginal and Torres Islander Childrens Day, with this years theme We are the Elders of tomorrow, hear our voice In this weeks kindy yoga classes, we tell the story of Tiddalik - The Frog That Caused a Flood, incorporating the native animals from the story into poses that help the children release physical tension, build strength, improve focus and cultivate community. In kindy yoga, every week we are telling a story with our bodies, however in A...boriginal and Torres strait Islander culture, this is how stories have ALWAYS been told. Through movement and voice, passing down this ancient knowledge of the land & life from the elders of the past, by the elders of the present to the elders of the future. This years theme is rather apt We are the elders of tomorrow, hear our voice....
