21.01.2022 Whilst many have found 2020 to be difficult, children and teens are also feeling the brunt of the Year of Covid, and as many students now commence their HSC exams, the pressure is definitely on! Dr Shirley Telles (MBBS, Ph.D) has written a fantastic article outlining yoga’s diverse applications in improving mental health in children. Mental health in children has many dimensions such as having healthy interactions with peers and teachers, and being able to focus attention ...on specific activities (e.g., studying) while remaining calm. Another aspect of increasing importance is the sense of self-esteem, which is often associated with a child’s body image and eating behaviours. Yoga practice also improved the performance of children in a spatial memory task and in a cancellation task requiring selective attention. It is of importance to note that yoga practice improves these functions and also reduces physiological signs of mental stress (e.g., a reduced skin resistance value, reduced heart and breath rates with rhythmic breathing) in children. Apart from children with normal health, 20 sessions of yoga led to improvement in boys with diagnosed ADHD, based on five aspects of the Conner’s Parents Rating Scales (i.e., Emotional lability, and Restless/Impulsive behaviors, among others). Yoga practice has also been shown to have a positive self-concept and eating behaviors.@ Read the full article https://yogatherapyinstitute.com.au//effect-of-yoga-on-me/ Dr Shiley Telles will running our Yoga Therapy for Anxiety Workshop on Saturday November 7, 1:30-3.00pm AEST.
