We may be wrapping up at some places, such as Sharing Places this week. Some yoga studio students are already heading off for leave and taking advantage of the local travel currently available. My holiday was in February when I visited family before the March closures, so I’m teaching through on a reduced timetable.... 24.01.2022 Even with the impacts of Covid-19 reducing how many classes I taught across the year by half, I still somehow crossed the 2000 class milestone on the 13th of December! It's my admin day today and I was checking in on my class records. As I updated the last few weeks into the record and refreshed the running total, I sat stunned in my chair. This is a reminder of just how great the yoga community is. Thank you for your continued support for me directly and for the studios I t...each at. 23.01.2022 I'll be home for Christmas. Will you? I have a Christmas present idea if you are! I would need to wear a Santa's helper hat to collect some marvellous goodies together. It might involve some local yummy goodies, pamper items (Perfect Potion anyone?), classes and/or treatments to enjoy over the break. Whoever receives the gift may feel like they did go away on holiday after all. The goodies and items would be packaged as a gift for the day and include gift cards for things out...side the box. The main reason for the post today is to see if you are interested? Pop a if you like the idea or a if you think you would be interested in purchasing the I'll be home for Christmas gift box. 21.01.2022 It’s Givemas at Club Lime CISAC. If you’re coming along to the Wednesday classes with me at CISAC Ladies, you are welcome to drop a gift off at reception to go to Canberra Hospital Foundation Division of Surgery. There are 156 beds in that ward. A couple of guidelines: new, unwrapped items only. They can be in an open gift bag as a way of wrapping, but do not have to be. Each Club Lime gym participating in the collection for #chfgivemas will have a wish list of appropriate items. Collections will close on 17 December. I’ll post any further details later. Out and about at the moment.



21.01.2022 Hello and good morning! I was meant to be heading to Sydney on Wednesday afternoon this week for a five day Yoga Therapy training module. The ACT Government has flagged the Greater Sydney Area and urged Canberrans not to travel to areas with known clusters. So, I'm unable to attend this year and will have to go next year. There is only a small change to this week's timetable. Sunday morning, 9:30am at Flourish Yoga Canberra will be covered by Michelle.... 18.01.2022 Good morning! So my usual 7:30am post disappeared into the void somewhere. I prepared it last night and this morning, blip, nothing. What I said is this week is the same as last week on the timetable. Next week will change though as I head into another module of Yoga Therapy training. I will be studying from Monday to Friday next week, so only the Sunday classes will be on.... I also wanted to mention that my online members platform is taking a while to open as I do my own website creation and maintenance, video recording and editing, on top of teaching, studies and my own admin. So the 1 July goal I had set has not panned out as originally aspired to, but you know I'll still be working on it 'till it is done! I'll keep you posted. I'm off to prepare for my 10am. 18.01.2022 I’m ending the day with an evening Pranayama (breathwork) practice and meditation before bed. It always helps to set the space up with things that will help you to feel calm and focused. A candle is a great thing for both of those objectives. The warming hues of a candle instead of harsh bright light to increase relaxation and you can also focus your attention on the flickering light. Some incense or an essential oil in the diffuser, something comfortable to sit on, maybe a ...blanket for warmth and I’m ready! Have you tried meditating? 17.01.2022 Hello everyone! A major change in the timetable this week. Classes at UC FitX have come to an end. If you used to come to my UC classes and would like to arrange an alternative class option, please send me a PM. UC FitX may look at yoga again in 2021. We'll keep you posted. Since this change has happened, I'm going to try offering an online lunchtime Vinyasa Flow class on Wednesdays at 12:30pm. In this class, I will incorporate prop-assisted yoga for anyone joining in from th...eir workspace. This will include things you already have around you, such as a chair, maybe a wall, and a belt or scarf. The class will be low intensity, but enough to ensure you move in the middle of your working day without sitting back down all sweaty in your business wear. Zeus (the Swiss Shepherd doggo of the home) is not used to me teaching classes in the middle of the day, so he may make an appearance off to the side. It has been his habit to nap when I've practiced on the mat. We'll see how the lunch class goes. That's it from me for now. Through the catastrophic South East Coast fires last Summer and the Covid-19 pandemic, communities banded together to help each other, albeit through technology when we could not be physically close. 17.01.2022 Hello Monday! And hello to you too. I'm back with another week of yoga class options and some of the names are changed! Restorative Movement is now Restorative Yoga. A class full of improvised props you have around the home to support you in a restful and unwinding practice before bed on Tuesday evenings.... Breathe and Flow is now Accessible Yoga at Home. Accessible Yoga is for underserved communities and people that would otherwise find yoga inaccessible to them. Here's an accessibility question for thought: What if you could not stand for half a class or at all? Maybe sit. What if sitting on the floor causes hip or back pain? Maybe sit on a chair. What if sitting in general causes discomfort? How about lying down? Yoga is not a one size fits all practice and we need to embrace our individuality and differences. The aim of this Accessible Yoga class is to bring the yoga practice to the comfort of your own home (a great option if leaving home for any reason is not possible), using what you have available to you and working with how you feel on any given day. The flow and approach of the class is to nurture and invite your own exploration of yoga, equipping you with ideas and customisations for practice. We will check in, breathe, move and come into a restful state to finish this one hour evening class. Energy Flow is now Vinyasa Flow. We will still focus on themes around energy at times, but I wanted to change Restorative and Vinyasa to names most of my students can associate with. If you aren't sure what these names mean - maybe you've done yoga, but not known the style of class or you are familiar with other names than these - feel free to message me to learn more about what the classes involve. UC, Flourish, Club Lime Ladies and InSync are all as per usual. My unlisted classes that were on term break are back this week. Also, Anytime Fitness Jamison will be reviewed later this month. I’ll be teaching some Yin Yoga classes at Balanced Yoga Kingston on the regular timetable from the following dates: Sunday, 29 November - 4:00pm Yin/Yang Wednesday, 2 December - 7:00pm Yin... Thanks to everyone involved in the changes to the regular timetable so I could accommodate additional classes. I’m returning to a pre-Covid amount of classes, which is great! This includes a shift to InSync BML’s Sunday Relaxation Earth Flow, shifting to 7:30pm. A great way to finish off your weekend and have a good nights sleep for the week ahead. 15.01.2022 I love using dowel explorations for alignment (along with blocks and straps). This morning, I came across a great example posted by the awesome Trina Altman. We’re not using props in studios and gyms right now, but you could imagine a dowel or broom handle along the length of your back as you sit towards and rise up from Utkatasana/Powerful Pose.

13.01.2022 Thanks to Maria Scrivan for making this lovely little cartoon I just came across! It's definitely a key to Meditation or even Savasana at the end of class - learning to stay. I've had my fair share of people leave (or bolt for the door) when I say we are coming into Savasana. I don't take it personally when people leave in that transition point between winding down and coming to rest for five to ten minutes. I've had people say: - I have another class I need to get to (at the... gym) - I have an appointment to get to (doctor, physio, dentist, etc.) - I've got to get back to work (usually when the class is 60min and they can only stay for a 45min class) - I'm catching up with friends for a coffee (or some other social engagement), but thought I'd squeeze yoga in as well today. I haven't had these reasons given, but I know they can occur: - It makes my body feel uncomfortable to lie still for so long on the floor - My mind won't shut up - I came to workout, not lie still on the floor - This is too spiritual/hippie/new age for my liking - I'm afraid of falling asleep on the floor and snoring - I'm worried I'll fart/make some embarrassing noise while the room is quiet - I think I'll disturb the class because I cannot sit still/cough when reclined/sneeze when there's a temperature change, etc. Challenge: If you are a person that has walked out of class when the teacher says "Savasana," I challenge you to stay. Sometimes, Savasana has been dubbed "the most difficult part of the yoga class." It could be the most difficult part for one of the reasons I've listed, or not. Either way, I challenge you to own this part of your practice too, just as much as the Asana (poses). This is a little message of encouragement to anyone who has difficulty in staying for Savasana or sticking with a Meditation practice. If you stay, you are allowing your body to integrate and absorb the practice you did. You are giving yourself five to ten minutes out of a 24 hour day to be present and notice how you're actually doing. That may be noticing your mind is rambling on a to-do list or that your back is aching. So what if your mind won't shut up? We're not aiming to suppress thoughts. We may want to give the mind some space to vent and let go of the whirlwind of thoughts though. Maybe noticing your body and whether the practice you just did was of any benefit? Your teacher will give you some suggestions on what can be done in a Savasana and then you can choose how you stay with that time. 12.01.2022 For January, I’m focusing on the breath. We’ve had a lot of things happen in 2020 and the start of 2021 that would impact our ability to take a good quality breath. I won’t write a full recap on everything as we are all in this together. Sometimes if we can notice how our body, emotions and mind space are doing, we may notice the breath reflects when we are relaxed, sad, under stress or anxious. How have current events made you feel in the body? How are your emotions and sta...te of mind? If this is already making you uncomfortable without even going into details, then do not delve further. Everyone has their own breath patterns and it is useful to know yours. For example, identifying when you are experiencing, stress or anxiety. You can then harness the breath to diffuse some of that. It’s important to mention that not all breathing practices (Pranayama) are beneficial for people. Some practices may elevate anxiety or exacerbate sinus congestion, for example. There are a lot of benefits too, such as increased parasympathetic response (the rest and digest part of the autonomic nervous system) and mental clarity. Let’s take a moment to breathe. If you are open to doing this, take a deep breath in through the nose while lifting the shoulders towards the ears. Then give a big sigh out through the mouth while letting the shoulders drop down. If the first one felt good, try taking another two. This is what I call Falling Out Breath, which is used at the end of asana practice, before savasana. The breath falls out the mouth on the exhalation. Who loves using this breath practice? 08.01.2022 This photo was taken on Bandanna Day 2019 at Club Lime Ladies. Bandanna Day is coming up in October and I'm checking in with you, yoga family! Would you like to get your hands on a bandanna this year and support Canteen? I know some of you missed out last year, so I'm onto it early, making sure no one misses the message. There are some new designs coming out in the mixed box this year. Great little stocking stuffers for Christmas (yeep, I said that word!), to keep the sun off... your neck or head, decorative or doggo-rative - there's a paw pattern and one with dogs this year! The selection also includes indigenous designs, rainbow , animal (including a cute koala one ), and food - like pineapples or the sushi design. If there is enough interest in my community, I'll grab a box. $5 for cotton, $15 for the satin (they only send four satin by the way). 07.01.2022 And I'm back on track with some More Than Asana posts. In my last post, I talked about Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and the Eight Limbs of Yoga. The Eight Limbs are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. In this post, we're starting off with the first of five Yamas. You could liken a Yama to a law of life or how you interact with the world around you. Ahimsa is considered as non-harming. What do we consider as harm? I'm not going to go into the m...any negative connotations that arise with the word harm. I'm sure we can all think of a handful and none of it nice. How does Ahimsa, and the rest of the Yamas, tie into our yoga practice? For one, yoga can be taken from your yoga mat out into your everyday life. Practicing kindness in thoughts, words and deeds is a good way of working on non-harming. On the yoga mat, I have tried these examples when focusing on the Yama, Ahimsa: - As I explored my poses, I noticed if I was working my body to where it felt comfortably challenged in the practice. It's important to listen to what the body is capable of doing each day. Pushing or forcing the body past its range, strength or endurance could potentially cause harm through injury. - While in poses, or even in Savasana at the end of a class, I could observe what internal dialogue I had and whether my own words to myself or thoughts towards others are kind. How do you practice kindness and actively reduce harm, whether that is related to yourself or others?
