21.01.2022 Since I've come home I've been on a bender, experimenting with propagating everything I can get my hands on: olives, peaches, loquats, onions, garlic, English ivy, bamboo, lemon, strawberries, mint, parsley, succulents and so on and so on. Some experiments dry and die. Some get attacked by snails and die. Some don't like the transplanting and die. Some don't like the soil, the shade, the amount of water, the indoor environment, the outdoor environment and inevitably they die..., die and die. Amongst the many failures there's success too - this lemongrass has formed roots pretty easily, just sitting in water. After about ten tries of trying to get an avocado seed to form roots, this one finally shot out overnight. And these beet greens just want to grow grow grow. It's all an interesting process regardless of the result. It's a numbers game - try often enough, eventually something lives and thrives. Dead experiments are great for compost, so even when you lose, you win. And boy I just love growing stuff.

19.01.2022 Walking up Mt Taylor, this little beauty started popping up all over the place, batting her lashes like it was no one's business. Fringe Lily - so very charmed to meet you.

17.01.2022 Life is not something that happened on Earth, but something that happened to Earth, said David Grinspoon, an astrobiologist at the Planetary Science Institute. There is this feedback between the living and nonliving parts of the planet that make the planet very different from what it would otherwise be. As Dr. Margulis wrote, Earth, in the biological sense, has a body sustained by complex physiological processes. Life is a planetary-level phenomenon and Earth’s surface has been alive for at least 3,000 million years.

17.01.2022 To keep going at it... play. To keep showing up for others..... play. To keep our sense of wonder and ability to laugh... play.... To see the beauty... play. Play. It reduces stress, fuels our creativity, counters depression, lowers anxiety, widens our perspectives, improves brain function and just helps us feel better. Many of us need it more now than ever. Come and join me for movement classes that are simple, accessible and playful. Session runs from 15 October to 4 December - a total of 8 weeks. More here: https://yogawithyonnie.com/onlineclasses

13.01.2022 Right. I'm decluttering. The contents of the various homes we lived in over the last 15 years - London, Hong Kong, Beijing, Washington DC - have all come together here in Canberra. Aptly derived from the Ngunnawal language, meaning 'meeting place'. We've gone from sleeping and eating on the floor to having duplicates of everything. I'm not asking myself if items spark joy. ... Nothing can spark joy when there's so much stuff. I'm guiding myself through this mountain of stuff with a sensory criteria. I'm asking how my body feels interacting with the object. How does it feel to hold? How does this feel on my skin? What shapes does my body make while interacting with the object. Does it allow a secure grip? Is there strain? Am I at ease? This cup is pretty. It's dainty and elegant. The blue and white patterns evoke teenage memories of 3pm tea taimu (tea time) in my host mother Masako's lounge room in Nara where we'd sit under the heated kotatsu in Winter and nibble on bite sized snacks. She had a collection of fancy Noritake bone china teacups just like this. When I unpacked the storage box with this cup, I was struck again by how pretty it was. Then one cup of tea in, and my body remembers.. it's awkward as all heck. The handle digs a groove into my fingers. It's difficult to get a solid purchase on it without squeezing hard. The crampy feeling in my hand lingers long after my cup of tea. There's a lot out there I won't be able to change in a hurry. There's unease and discomfort I'll need to sit with for a while. And if there's an opportunity to make a moment just a little easier, I'm going to do it. That starts with my body. Shirts that are too tightsheets that are too rough, shoes that are too squeezy, lamps that are too glaring, edges that are too jagged... I'm giving them all new homes, hopefully to people whose bodies are a better match for them. May they create ease, comfort, stability and moments of peace. May we each find more ease, comfort, stability and peace.

07.01.2022 The dishes are dirty There are emails to answer And some errands to run and I'm going to lay right here in my hammock and listen to the birds sing.

06.01.2022 Trees. They've got it all figured out. Worth a listen.
