08.01.2022 Today marks the 13th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) by the General Assembly in 2007.... The UNDRIP is the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous peoples - the culmination of more than 20 years of negotiation between First Nations people and governments of the world. It establishes universal guidelines for the survival, dignity and wellbeing of First Nations communities tailoring international human rights frameworks to the unique identities of First Nations people. It is a stain on Australias human rights record to know that we initially voted against the UNDRIP at the UN General Assembly in 2007. The Australian Government finally announced its support for the Declaration two years later in 2009. The Declaration is particularly significant because Indigenous peoples, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, were involved in its drafting, finally allowing First Nations people a say in the human rights issues that effect their lives.
