25.01.2022 Great to see innovative techniques which target feral cats in the outback

25.01.2022 It pays to get down and search under the dense thicket of casuarina. A new record for the RCS Herbarium today. The Small Banded Greenhood - Pterostylis orbiculata. These are only 100-150mm high and had 2 - 6 flowers. Now that's something to get excited about ! Confirmed by Margaret Petridis and Andrew Brown on the West Australian Orchids FB page. Thank you.

24.01.2022 Well done to this event in York, WA. An Australia wide competition raising awareness about the unique form and diversity of WA Wildflowers

23.01.2022 What amazing birds . So many of us tell the tale of these cockatoo's arriving as the rain is on it's way. We could use them in the Wheatbelt right now .

23.01.2022 Diversity is important to bring birds and insects to a garden. The Bushland Garden on Grey St. is a haven for wildlife in the centre of York. There is even a resident rabbit

22.01.2022 Another interesting discovery on a local reserve this week. A hybrid species between Wurmbea drummondii and Wurmbea tenella. A delightful little plant which grows from corms - found on sandy loam where there was little grass cover. We also saw literally thousands of Wurmbea drummondii ( second photo). A very special day A reminder how important it is to protect our areas of remnant vegetation. Thanks to Mike Hislop and Terry MacFarlane at the WA Herbarium for the ID.

22.01.2022 Looking for that perfect Christmas gift? We have produced a beautiful water bird calendar - only $20 each Comment below if you'd like to pre-order one or two or.. The calendar theme is "Water Birds of the Town Pool York". The photos shown here are just two of the birds featured, aren't they stunning! Thanks to photographers Bryn Watkins and Jean Hort

22.01.2022 Support our local Wildflower Group growing healthy, waterwise, native plants for your garden.

21.01.2022 Thanks Shire Of York A community that works together gets things done!

21.01.2022 At last - the post you have all been waiting for The River Conservation Society were thrilled to have 18 volunteers arrive at the reserve in Mt Hardey to help plant the 8000 sedges donated by Westgrow Farm Trees. We had such a lovely sunny working day and then clouds and threatening rain in the later afternoon. But it wasn't to be. Luckily the creekline was wet enough but we will be hoping for a good soaking rain during the month. We enjoyed a tasty bbq lunch with yummy hamburgers and sausages generously donated by Stuart and Lana at York Quality Butchers. Thank you sincerely to all who helped make the day successful. We now watch and wait, hopefully observing some healthy changes along the creekline in the coming years. What a great way to celebrate National Tree Day !!

21.01.2022 A lovely sunny Saturday morning for RCS volunteers to help with the community cemetery cleanup. to Mel Van de Pol for organising the cleanup weekend. Well done team!

20.01.2022 A reminder of our RCS planting in Avon Park 9-12pm this Sunday. Share with your friends and help us create some habitat. Hope to see you there

20.01.2022 National Threatened Species Day Today we need to think about all our wild birds, animals and plants that are under threat and what we can do so we don't lose these forever. Do you know why 7th September was chosen? This is the day in 1936 that the last Tasmanian Tiger died. In the Shire of York we have 9 plant species that are listed by DBCA as "Threatened" one of them is the beautiful Scarlet Leschenaultia (Lechenaultia laricina). Our bushland reserves, road verges and remnant bushland on farms all serve to protect our threatened species and need to be protected and conserved.

20.01.2022 Tempted to take that dead tree or fallen log from bushland for your fireplace? Please dont, they are much needed habitat for so many of our native fauna.

20.01.2022 We’re planting, we’re dancing, we’re having fun but best of all we’re repairing our environment with Activate the Wheatbelt

19.01.2022 River Conservation members will be helping with the cemetery cleanup tomorrow (Saturday) See you there at 10am!

19.01.2022 For those that walk regularly on the walktrail on the east side of the River you will be familiar with the success of the planting in 2019 carried out by River Conservation Society , York community and the amazing Activate the Wheatbelt volunteers. We are so happy to be able to have the Activate group back again this year to infill and carry out more revegetation work. The aim was to establish low growing, fire resistant vegetation which would suppress weed growth, reduce the... fire risk and form habitat for native flora and fauna. The RCS has been busy preparing the site and another 12,000 seedlings will be planted over 4 sessions. The first was yesterday with York District High School Room 17 students. There will be a major planting with the Activate the Wheatbelt on the 19th June and another RCS & York Community planting day on the west side of the walktrail on Saturday 26th June. Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management Inc and the Boodja Rangers have offered to assist with a reed planting at the pools on Avon Tce near Knight St. We would like to form a frog and bird friendly wetland here - a sanctuary which links drainage from Avon Tce into the River. The RCS would like to thank the Shire of York for their support enabling our group to carry out this conservation work creating to a healthier ecosystem on the Avon River. See more

17.01.2022 Have you any plans for the first Sunday in the school holidays July 5th ? The RCS are planting out the river frontage in Avon Park with hardy native species. This will help stabilise the river bank and create some healthy ground cover as well as look terrific ( the ducks and other wildlife will love it ). Bring the family and have some fun 9am -12pm

17.01.2022 Great initiative by the Shire of York

16.01.2022 Today is World Environment Day. Remember that the foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable, all come from nature. Caring for nature starts in our own backyards so the River Conservation Society would like to say THANK YOU to all those people in our local York community who care for our environment in so many ways, you are all environmental heroes!

16.01.2022 York Regional Herbarium volunteers have had an exciting week with 4 special finds to celebrate Threatened Species Week ! 1. Cyanicula ixioides subsp. candida Priority 2 2. Anigozanthos bicolor subsp. extans Priority 3 3. Stylidium exappendiculatum Priority 3 4. A special variation in a Hakea species.... All to be verified of course by the WA Regional Herbarium. More photo's Maryanne ?

16.01.2022 The RCS welcomed over 90 women and 50 children from the Ishar centre in Mirrabooka to the Avon Park in York. The women come from many different countries mostly as refugees. Everyone loved the morning tea 'Australian Style' with scones, jam and cream, lamingtons and anzacs washed down with lemonade and we supplied a delicious fried rice pack for lunch. It was fabulous to see so many happy, smiling faces and am sure they have left with special memories of the outing. Thanks to everyone of you who help make the event so successful. We are a great team and we made their day a little brighter. A big thank you their English teachers Helen and Tamar Green, Rcs members, who organised the day.

15.01.2022 Several interested parties visited the Naragebup Environmental Centre today looking for some guidance on setting up a centre in York. What a wonderful place. We came away with lots of ideas and energised to get the ball rolling. Well worth a visit with the family sometime. Thanks so much Barbara and Nicko for our tour and your great advice

15.01.2022 There is always plenty to photograph when the flowers in York are few and far between. Today's rain highlighted the fragile lichen growing on the Allocasuarina campestris. I wonder how old these are? They have a special relationship with native species. Any lichen experts out there ? Would love to know more about them.

13.01.2022 A handy reminder from the Shire of York:

10.01.2022 Hare orchid (Leporella fimbriata) flowering in York bushland reserves now. Usually you will find colonies of the red-veined blue/green leaves but no flowers. This flower had freshly emerged and was the most vibrant green and red, a tiny treasure!

10.01.2022 THANK YOU We are so pleased to receive this grant from Mia Davies. The grant will be used for the reconstruction, fencing and informational signage on an historic well in our conservation reserve at Mt Hardy. #miadaviesmla #localherogrant #experienceyork

10.01.2022 Wildflowering is a great chance to get out and observe what is happening in nature. The flowers are reducing in number but - Wow ! the spiders are sure making use of the warmer weather. We all will have seen the tiny ornate christmas spiders who are so abundant we have to choose our route carefully. Yesterday I was lucky enough to visit Wallaby Hills Reserve and came across this beauty. My 'go to' for identifying local insects is the Flickr account of Fred and Jean Hort. Dedi...cated to recording nature's beauty Fred and Jean have been volunteers with DPAW for many years. I thought they were having a joke when I saw this spider's name was Backobourkia heroine ! But no.... this is it's actual scientific name. The Heroic Orb Weaver is a common spider in our bushland areas in WA. This is a healthy female, the male is much smaller. It's orb web was spread between two shrubs collecting insects( not humans) for breakfast. A bite is not toxic but may cause irritation. It sure is beautiful when you get up close! See more

10.01.2022 Help the RCS plant some sedges in the creekline on the reserve off Wright's Rd in Mt Hardey . See details below & on our website: https://riverconservationsociety.org/pitt-brook-revegetati/ Help us make a difference - the frog's and other wildlife will love you for it

10.01.2022 York farmers, want to find out about protecting your soil’s biodiversity? Here is an opportunity and it’s free!

08.01.2022 Last planting for 2020. 'Lake Baker' on Avon Tce has been planted withe sedges to create habitat for the frogs, birds and other critters needing a good place to hide. Perhaps they will be underwater after the weekend's rain - they love it. Thanks to our helpers Peter G, Helen, Ken, Peter N and Audrey. Another box ticked

07.01.2022 River Conservation Society planting seedlings in the new RV Park & Mongers Crossing Ford Street - having fun in the mud! Thanks to the Shire of York for sponsorship and to Westgrow Farm Trees for the healthy seedlings

07.01.2022 Today the RCS was delighted to show a group from York Garden Club & friends the wildflowers on Mt. Bakewell Reserve. Here is the happy group and just a few of the beautiful flowers we found.

07.01.2022 Yes - the River Conservation Society are out planting again ! This time on the east side of the river between the swing bridge and Mongers Crossing. Even the dogs had lots of fun thanks to all who helped out. The rain was perfectly timed to settle the seedlings in.

07.01.2022 Spiders are such an important part of any ecosystem as a major part of their diet includes other invertebrates. Learn more about these 'not' so scary creatures at the Australian Museum website

06.01.2022 Thanks to all who made this day possible. A great way to celebrate Naidoc educating us all about Aboriginal Culture.

06.01.2022 Thanks to the YDHS students in the Access program for their splendid effort planting over 300 shrubs today. The park is going to look amazing and the birds will love the native wildflowers. Good to share planting with both councillors and SOY staff - a team effort Bring on Sunday !

06.01.2022 It's a big day for the RCS and Activate the Wheatbelt planting 7000 seedlings on the Avon River Walk trail east bank. If you hear some happy music - we are having fun creating a healthy environment

05.01.2022 Dedicated member of the River Conservation Society cleaning up in their spare time. Thanks Ray Bateman.

05.01.2022 Many owners don't realize that their unrestrained dogs are a serious threat to our wildlife. We often see dogs off lead along the Avon river walk, being allowed to run unrestrained through the riparian zones and swim in the river pools. These areas are home to Rakali, turtles and other aquatic and land based wildlife. Please walk your dogs on a lead so they don't have a chance kill or harass our precious native wildlife.

05.01.2022 Our AGM was held on Saturday, all positions were filled, congratulations to our new committee for 2020-2021. Thank you to Jane Ferro for accepting the position of Coordinator for the proposed new Environmental Centre. We welcomed our Shire of York representative Kevin Trent, heard about our planned program of activities for the coming year and enjoyed friendly discussions. Thank you also to White Gum Farm for making us so welcome, providing the perfect venue and a delicious lunch!

04.01.2022 Books you may not see on the average bookshelf

03.01.2022 Yes I have more photos Cyanicula ixioides subsp. candida closeup and Stylidium exappendiculatum (sounds like I'm trying to cast a spell with that name ) with extended trigger, just as well they're tiny plants, it would be dangerous if they were as big as a Xanthorrhoea!

02.01.2022 Pitt Brook Revegetation Project Commencing 9am, Friday 31st July 2020. At our Conservation Reserve, Wrights Road, Mt Hardy. A delicious BBQ lunch provided to all volunteers on the day. Note that this is NOT the Mt Hardy DBCA Reserve. This is the first step of a long term plan to rehabilitate this Reserve. If you would like to be part of this day but cannot plant there are other volunteering roles on offer so come and hep us in any way you can! For further details and directions please see our website https://riverconservationsociety.org/pitt-brook-revegetati/ or contact John 0429 799 450 or Audrey 0418 378 446

02.01.2022 We had an exciting find this week- collected on one of our River Conservation Reserves. A new record of the Priority Four Eucalyptus loxophleba X wandoo. This is an accepted hybrid between the two species Eucalyptus loxophleba subsp. loxophleba ( York Gum) and Eucalyptus wandoo subsp. wandoo (Wandoo). A great reason to get out and appreciate our bushland. Thank you Malcolm French

02.01.2022 A wonderful way to bring attention to WAs unique flora, please share with anyone you feel would be interested

02.01.2022 The York Bushland Garden is a credit to the Wildflower Society in York. Such a lovely spot to take the kids for a picnic or to go on your lunchbreak. Spring has definitely sprung.

01.01.2022 Frogs need a home? Water birds need nests? Difficult planting sites don't deter our resourceful RCS volunteers - just plant by boat 384 reeds planted into Bland's Pool this morning!

01.01.2022 Congratulations to the York Branch of the Wildflower Society on the newly built shadehouse erected in the Bushland garden. Lots more room for growing out local flora . Thanks to Lotterywest, the Shire of York and their hard working members. Well Done !!

01.01.2022 THANK YOU to RCS & York community volunteers who came to help plant along the riverbank in Avon Park this morning.
