17.01.2022 Devouring a delicious gift from one of my lovely students!

15.01.2022 Wow! Teaching is a profession that gifts you with many opportunities to unlock a young person's potential. This week I have been able to help a young man overcome his fear of public speaking. On Tuesday, it was his turn to give a speech in front of the class. He approached me during a lunch break and told me that he wouldn't be able to give the speech. I asked "why?". He replied "something happened in primary school that has made me fearful of public speaking ever since". I f...elt for the young man. I gently asked him if he wanted to be ruled by fear? I told him that I would of course not be forcing him to do it but I challenged him to break free of this fear and do the speech. I told him to give me a nod or shake during the lesson to let me know if he was up for it. The time came... and he shook his head. I smiled back at him and then told the class that I had a challenge for all of them. I said "I want anyone who is brave enough to come out to the front of the class and talk about anything you want for a whole minute". One student came up and did it. Then two. Then three. Until everyone in the class but one had come up and spoken to the class. The fearful young man had a friend next to him who gently said "do you want to have a go mate?" He looked at the front of the room, took a deep breath and said "alright". He talked about LASAGNE for an entire minute. He was confident. Spoke loudly and used gestures. He smiled at the end and sat down. He had won. Fear had lost. He had reached his potential in that moment. This morning as the young man walked into my science room, he asked "should I just go up to the front and give my speech now Mr Smith?" I beamed back at him. "Yes mate, go for it!" You Can! is passionate about helping young people unlock their potential. It is what gets us out of bed each and every day. Who Can? YOU CAN! We can. Taking bookings now.
