23.01.2022 Yesterday, at Frog Hollow Parkrun we celebrated TXR Runners. Well done to Elyse who organised and coordinated all of the TXR pacers and a huge thank you to the founders of the club and the committee members, past and present. . . The current president, Tim Emeny highlighted during his pre parkrun speech, the inclusiveness of the club. One of many examples of this is the welcoming of Blind Runner, Adam Koops. .... Most of the Waverley Park and Jells Park crew have guided Adam at some stage. Running for Adam wouldn't be possible without his guides so thank you to all of the TXR Guides. . . However a special mention must go to Simon Reymers who takes on this role at most TXR sessions. 18.01.2022 For those of you following my journey to hopefully one day compete at the Paralympics, here is my wrap up from the testing I recently did in South Australia. Testing at the Adelaide Super-Drome was intense but an amazing experience! It was my first time on track tandem in a velodrome. I enjoyed being able to share the experience with another VI athlete. We were paired up with world class pilots and under the guidance of the SASI Performance Coach, we started with 30 laps, on...ce comfortable we did a 500m time trial then a 4km individual pursuit. I’m not sure of what time or what speeds I achieved but I gave it my all. After the 2 tests, the performance coach gave us feedback which was really positive however there were more tests to come the following day. I went back to the hotel and rested and recovered and tried to mentally prepare for the following day which was difficult because I wasn’t sure of what we were going to be doing. At SASI the following day, I did 2 tests; the first was a 30 min heart rate test then a 4min all out sprint to test my VO2 max. I was hooked up and plugged in to everything but the Xbox. Although they weren’t entirely transparent about my results, I had a feeling the tests went well. We talked about the next steps, once I return to Melbourne which was for me to connect with the Victorian Institute of Sport and commence training. Since returning home, I have had a meeting with a coach from the VIS which went well however there are some hurdles to overcome before I can start training. They currently don’t have an athlete development program but are hoping to get this going so I can be a part of it, they don’t have a track tandem that I can utilise and I also need a professional pilot. For now, I have been instructed to enhance my bike fitness while solutions are found for these few obstacles. My whirlwind journey from meeting the talent scout at Melbourne airport, flying achinrto South Australia, meeting the coaches, other athletes and attending both the Adelaide Super-Drome and SASI and still managing to squeeze in a bit of sight-seeing, meant the trip was a huge learning and an unforgettable experience. 12.01.2022 This morning was all about Resilience, Planning and Problem Solving with the team at Coles. There was quite a bit of interest from the room around technology available to the vision impaired and questions regarding accessibility of their stores. Access to services, products and stores, both online and physically, is one of the biggest challenges Adam often faces. It was great to hear that this is front of mind for the people at Coles!...
