21.01.2022 "Dubbo Young Life leaders plus Bathurst leaders Rachel and Phil met together at Ridgecrest Retreat overlooking Lake Burrendong to encourage one another after a really difficult year. The location was stunning and it was a joy to gather face to face again. Everyone commented how much they needed this time out to reflect on what has been a trying year, and to think through the exciting possibilities for working with youth in the year to come through Young Life in Dubbo and Bath...urst. There was the usual fun and laughter that comes naturally when Young Life leaders gather together, and also time to read the bible and reflect. Going away for a weekend together sometimes feels like a lot of effort but then this effort gives way to rest and retreat that is so needed and welcome; particularly when our volunteers give so much of themselves to serve young people. 17.01.2022 For the past year, students looking for a place to unwind after a busy week have found just the place in the library at my high school in the North West of Sydney. Feel Good Friday is an opportunity to stop and focus on the present moment through colouring, puzzles and knitting. Students have been encouraged to bring their attention to the present moment by noticing the colours and shapes they are using for colouring in, the texture of the puzzle piece in their hand and even ...to notice their breathing as they search for that next puzzle piece. 'A' commented that it’s "a nice atmosphere" While 'E' says that he comes along because it’s "a good environment with good people" "Its relaxing and fun!" 'M' remarked, "I’m obsessed with puzzles" 'K' said "I like it because it’s fun, enjoyable and stress free. I like the music." This year students have also been knitting squares to send to Wrap With Love Inc, an organisation that provides blankets for those in need through Winter months. 17.01.2022 "When COVID 19 hit Macedonia, schools closed almost immediately and lockdown soon followed sending everyone indoors and into isolation. Here Young Life, along with everyone else around the world, had to make do with online activities. There was a bright spot - the Serve Skopje initiative. On August 22nd Young Life teamed up with some local churches to pick up the trash along our river. Over 70 bags were collected in that first event. We had a local pastor pray at the event an...d he said we should do it more often. So, on November 7th we gathered again - this time in two locations. So many things have been cancelled this year, so doing these outdoor service projects has been a rewarding and fulfilling joy. It has been fun also to see the generations gather together - from young children, to our Young Life students, one of whom plans to major in Environmental Science in university next year, to the older generation. 16.01.2022 I began working at my school in the Central West of NSW three weeks ago and in that time I have been involved in one-on-one engagement/emotional support sessions with eight students over the three days I work each week. Included in these sessions are parent meetings both in person and over the phone, with the aim of taking a holistic approach to improving outcomes for these families. Additionally, I have been involved in whole school activities for Education week including c...ooking morning tea for staff alongside students, training them in the art of barista skills and scone making! This was facilitated with the aim of students "giving back" to their teachers, in appreciation for their ongoing support. Coming up, I plan to have a weekly "Wisdom Wednesday" group for senior students to discuss their future plans/dreams/aspirations and current barriers they feel may challenge their goals. 09.01.2022 At my high school on the northern tablelands, I have been running a Coffee Cart Program for the past year. The program was designed for those kids that are struggling with attendance and behavioural issues to give them the chance to learn a skill and have a positive outlet at school. At the moment we have two groups of students that join with me weekly for half the day. We work through things like communications skills, financial literacy, project management, problem solving,... team work, time management, planning and organising skills, creativity and innovation. By the end of the term the kids attitudes have changed to be more positive and respectful. They love every aspect of being a part of the Coffee Cart Program from the set up and pack down to the designing of coffees, taking orders and making deliveries. We have seen such positive results and it is a great place to have deeper conversations with kids about home, school, friends, relationships and everyday life.
