24.01.2022 Tasmania's biggest rural event will be back in the paddock next year after plans announced by the Agfest committee today. The event will be extended to four day...s and will be held on May 5-8. Ticket sales will move online and crowd numbers will be capped at 15,000 per day, to cater for social distancing requirements. Agfest chairman Ethan Williams said planning by the committee is already well under way. Applications for exhibitors will open on October 1. 19.01.2022 Our third feature is Simon Dornauf who is the General Manager of his family's Berry Business, Hillwood Berries. They have been growing the four major berry categories in the Tamar Valley since 2010. Over those 10 seasons their business has grown to 40 Hectares of protected cropping and is 100% hydroponic. During the harvest their business employ around 350-450 picking staff along with 50 Full time employees. Over the Last 5 years Hillwood Berries have moved to recruiting thr...ough the Australian Pacific Seasonal Worker Program along with local recruitment. On top of managing his berry business Simon is also the Chairman of Strawberries Australia and a board member of Berries Australia. It was great to reconnect w...ith those passionate about agriculture. Thank you to Tania Rattray MLC, Ruth Forrest MLC and Mayor of Northern Midlands Council Mary Knowles. We'd also like to extend our thanks to our speakers Minister Guy Barnett, Elle Davis from Young Agricultural Professionals Network (and we can't wait to start collaborating even more), our key note speaker Barb Walters from RAW - Rural Alive & Well for sharing her passion for supporting positive mental health and to Massimo Mele for his insight and passion about local supply chains. We would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our out going and incoming Executive members who work hard behind the scenes to keep providing opportunities to create a dynamic, connected and relevant community that enriches women.

14.01.2022 Next up we have Fiona Kerslake. Dr Fiona Kerslake is a cool climate viticulture and fermentation Senior Research Fellow at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), and has recently moved on from the Head of Horticulture role, encompassing rotational and annual horticultural crops. Fiona is an expert in viticulture for Pinot noir and sparkling wines, a lack of analytical methods for sparkling wine led to Fiona developing capacity in wine analytical chemistry, including i...ntroducing new detailed objective analyses for sparkling wine. She has transferred this knowledge to help support and develop the burgeoning Tasmanian craft cider industry. Fiona has also recently joined the Bitwise Agronomy team, lending her horticultural expertise to this Launceston-based AgTech start-up. We look forward to Fiona providing a valuable insight into the seasonal workers challenge facing Tasmania and thank her for offering her time to come along to this event. 13.01.2022 The Tasmanian agricultural industry relies heavily on seasonal workers travelling from interstate and internationally to fill the labour requirements over the summer period. With the emergence of COVID-19, and the subsequent border restrictions enforced, this has meant that growers are facing significant labour shortages over the busiest period of their production systems. The Young Agricultural Professionals Network (YAPN) of Tasmania are delivering a facilitated panel disc...ussion to help unpack the different perspectives of the seasonal workers issue facing our state’s agricultural industries, and to understand how we as an industry will move forward. 11.01.2022 Introducing our Panel Speakers! First up is Hon Minister Guy Barnett MP. Born and raised on a farm in northern Tasmania, Guy Barnett studied law (LLB, LLM) and worked in a Melbourne and Washington DC law firm before he established and managed his award winning government and public affairs business.... After almost a decade representing Tasmania in the Senate, Guy was elected to the Tasmanian State Parliament in 2014. He was appointed to Cabinet in 2016 and now serves as the Minister for Primary Industries & Water, Resources, Energy and Veterans Affairs. Guy is an author of several books including, ‘Our Heros, Tasmania’s Victoria Cross Recipients’ and ‘Make a difference a practical guide to lobbying’. Guy is married with 3 children, and is a sports enthusiast with a keen interested in cycling, tennis and fishing.
