23.01.2022 Communication (AAC): Debunking AAC Myths What is AAC? Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is any type of communication strategy for people with a range of conditions who have significant difficulties speaking. An AAC system is combing all communication methods including gesture, vocalisations, pointing to symbols etc. An AAC system may be a long or short-term solution for the child who is having difficulty communicating. ... Myths surrounding AAC- There are many myths surrounding the use of AAC and how it is used across different settings. Here are some myths debunked surrounding various AAC systems: Myth #1: A person using an AAC device doesnt need it with them all of the time Communication is a basic human right. People who cannot speak encounter difficulties in getting information, building relationships, participating in education and employment and being safe. An AAC system is a way for people to communicate their needs, preferences and ideas Myth #2: AAC reduces the ability for a child to develop language à I just want them to talk Using an AAC system will not prevent a child from developing spoken language, or an adult from using whatever speech they can. In fact, using an AAC system can help to support development of spoken language. Children who use AAC need training and opportunities to practice their developing language skills. Through many opportunities to practice their skills in different settings, they will not only develop their communication skills but be able to use the system in a wide variety of situations. Myth #3: Young children dont need an AAC until they reach school age and are not ready to use it until then Like any early intervention, the early we start something the better. Introduction of an AAC device early can support in the development of natural speech and language and can increase vocabulary for children aged 3 years and younger. Research shows that AAC use with preschool children increased use of longer words and development of grammar. 21.01.2022 Painting Activity With Salt, Glue And Watercolours What we used: -Pipettes -Liquid watercolours... -White glue -Paper The process:Squeeze glue onto paper. We talked about how the glue was dancing. Then, spoon salt on top of the glue. Remember you can also shake the salt. This is a fun activity by itself! Shake off the excess salt. Applying the watercolours: Use the pipettes to transfer the liquid watercolours on top of the salt. There are always those that want to use 2 pipettes at a time, too! As the salt absorbs the paint, and they both mix with the glue, an interesting texture appears. Some of the children poked and pulled at the mixture, finding the feeling fascinating. When finished, let thoroughly dry. Some of the salt might flake off if there was not enough glue. We made sure to shake each one over the garbage can before sending them home, so that the excess was removed. This activity is so fun and will keep all the kids entertained. #youngalliedhealth #diyactivities #artsandcrafts #painting #townsvillearts

19.01.2022 We are here to help you and your child in person or online At Young Allied Health, weve previously used teletherapy to connect with clients in remote locations, however, there is no reason we cant use this platform to connect with our local clients. There is an increasing body of evidence that teletherapy can be just as effective as in person therapy. This is to also make sure your child is still able to progress from the comfort of your own home. At Young Allied Healt...h, we use Zoom to help communicate and work on many therapeutic goals, such as speech, communication, self-care and daily living skills, parent training, monitoring home programs. There are many benefits of teletherapy as it allows for continuity of therapy and no travel required. The activities can be completed using objects and items from the childs natural environment helping to make therapy super functional. The parent or caregiver gets to learn a lot especially in face-to-face therapy, often the therapist is the one doing the therapy, and the parent may join in or sit back and watch. With telehealth, the therapist supports the parents like a coach it can be the parents who are physically doing the therapy while the therapist provides real-time feedback, problem solving, and direction. This allows your therapist to help you get better at helping your child! Siblings are also welcome as its much easier to occupy siblings for a telehealth session in their own home, rather than getting them all to attend a clinic and sit quietly in a wait room. Screen time is beneficial as lots of kids find screen time and technology really reinforcing in itself and may be highly motivating to attend to teletherapy. Our sessions are just the same as any regular therapy session except the clinician is on a screen instead of in the room. As your therapist we will gather information about your child by asking questions, getting feedback, and observing your child. At the end of the session feedback is given to you about your childs performance and as well as suggestions and ideas on how to correct any areas of difficulty that is noticed during the session. Give it ago you may be surprised about how well this works for you and your family. #makingiteasier #townsvillefamilies #helpingyourchild

17.01.2022 Make it at home! This week, were featuring our favourite homemade activities! We love this simple posting box because it can be used to target fine motor skills, matching, colour recognition, counting, requesting, and more! Kids just love it too! All you need is a sturdy box, some coloured paper, and clear contact paper. Glue the coloured paper into rectangles to the front of the box. Cut small slits into the box that will allow you to post the coloured letters through. ...We recommend laminating some coloured paper to be the posting letters as they wont last very long as just paper. Have fun matching colours, talking about in and out, perfecting the pincer grip to post the letters, or counting how many of each colour. #homeactivities #youngalliedhealth #education #learning
17.01.2022 Make it at home! This week, were featuring our favourite homemade activities! We call them Nummnumms! These little tennis ball creatures just love to eat everything and they make a num-num-num-num sound as they munch through coins! Kids think its hilarious and theyre great because it works those hand muscles as the child has to squeeze the ball to open the mouth. To make these, you will need a tennis ball, super glue, and some googly eyes. Youll need a Stanley knife to very carefully cut the mouth. For the posting items, you can use coins, buttons, tokens, or any small object. #homeactivities #education #learning #youngalliedhealth
16.01.2022 Make your own Galaxy Glitter Jars WHAT YOU NEED -500ml glass or plastic jar with lid -Distilled water... -Cotton balls - Colourful liquid watercolour -Silver glitter HOW TO MAKE 1. Press a handful of cotton balls on the bottom of the jar. 2. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of silver glitter over the cotton balls. 3. Pour diluted turquoise liquid watercolour over the cotton balls until its absorbed. 4. Continue alternating layers of cotton balls, glitter, and diluted liquid watercolour until you reach the top of the jar. Pack the cotton balls tightly into the jar without gaps! The idea is to have the packed cotton balls absorb the watercolours, rather than have them slosh around inside the jar. When prepared in this fashion, the galaxy jar will keep swirly, separated colours for several dayseven if shaken! We would love to see your glitter jars these school holidays - Post your own glitter jars in the comments!
15.01.2022 Meet the one of the many faces of Young Allied Health Jessica - Position Director, Speech Pathologist... - What are your hobbies/interests? I am a total bookworm - I love reading all genres. I love music and spending time with my family. What is your favourite food? I love a good pasta. - What made you want to become a Speech Pathologist? I think it was a long journey to figure out what I was going to do, starting with my introduction to speech therapy when I was in pre-school with a lisp! I deferred going to uni fora year after school and took a gap year in America, and it was when I was studying anatomy and physiology over there that I realised I had chosen right. Now I can't imagine doing anything else! - What is the most rewarding thing about your job? Getting to share in so many precious moments with families as their kids develop. Sharing in a child's first words, eating a new food - it is so rewarding to get to be a part of each family's journey! - What is your most cherished memory from working at Young Allied Health? I love that the kids I work with teach me just as much as I teach them. These little people come up with such wisdom and insight that it blows me away. My favourite quote from one of my kids was when facing a challenging work task, instead of whinging or complaining, he smiled and said "I've got my brain, and it tells me to never give up - let's do it!". What an awesome attitude! #meettheteam #youngalliedhealth #supportingtownsville #townsvillefamilies
15.01.2022 Its International Teddy Bears Picnic Day! With this beautiful weather, what a great idea to get outside with the little ones and their bears and enjoy a picnic
15.01.2022 Were getting digital! Its been an ongoing project for us here at Young Allied to reduce the amount of paper waste through switching to online forms. Last year we introduced digital intake paperwork which weve just upgraded to make the process even smoother. Were excited this week that weve finally converted our service agreements to digital! Over the coming weeks and months, we hope to convert many of our previously paper-based forms to digital. Why is this such a good ...thing? We have so many filing cabinets full of paper that we need to keep for a long time, and its a pile that we just keep adding to. It must be trees worth of paper! We realised it was time to update our processes and get with the times of digital forms! Our aim is to decrease our use of paper by at least 50% by the end of 2020. Digital forms are also much easier for clients to access remotely and can be completed from any device easy peasy! Please be sure to let us know what you think of the new forms! See more

14.01.2022 Meet the Team Stacey Position Speech Pathologist ... Where are you from? How did you end up in Townsville? I was born in Sydney but grew up in Darwin. I moved to Townsville to complete my Speech Pathology degree at James Cook University. What are your hobbies/interests? I enjoy puzzles, spending time with friends and family, and being outdoors. What is your favourite food? I love pasta dishes, and of course, chocolate! What made you want to become a Speech Pathologist? I wanted a job within health care that was interesting and different, and gave me the opportunity to work within the pediatric population. I became interested in speech pathology because my nephew was born with a cleft palate and was heavily involved with speech pathologists from birth, which I found very fascinating! Speech pathology not only works with populations from babies to the elderly, but also incorporates so many different topics and areas including speech, language, swallowing, voice, and stuttering. There are always new things to learn, and so many different places it can take you! What is the most rewarding thing about your job? I love that every day is different, that it is challenging, and that there are always new things to learn! I love being a part of making a difference in the lives of both children and their families, and watching the achievements that can be made, no matter how big or small it may be. We love having you on our team, Stacey! #meettheteam #yah #youngalliedhealth #speechpathologist #supportingtownsville
13.01.2022 Make it at home! This week, were featuring our favourite homemade activities! This may be the most well-loved homemade toy at the clinic. Its another posting game kids just love posting things. All you need for this one is a plastic container with a lid and some sparkly pom-poms. Carefully cut a hole into the lid of the container that allows you to post the pom-poms into the container. Its another great activity for working on fine motor skills, requesting, counting, and colour naming. To make it extra hard on those fine motor skills hold the childs hand so they have to do the posting one handed! Just be sure to always supervise with your little ones as these pom-poms might look like just the thing they want to chew. #homeactivities #learning #education #youngalliedhealth

13.01.2022 This week is Speech Pathology Week! Speech Pathology Week seeks to promote the speech pathology profession and the work done by speech pathologists with the 1.2 million Australians who have a communication disability. In 2020, Speech Pathology Week is from 23-29 August. ... The theme for Speech Pathology Week in 2020 is: Communicating with confidence! The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the challenges faced by Australians with communication disability. Communication is a basic human right and Speech Pathology Week seeks to make Australians aware of this. Speech pathologists work to ensure everyone can communicate with confidence. It is important that the broader community understands that: 1.2 million Australians live with communication disability; communication disability is largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight; more confident communication helps maximise educational, health and social outcomes; and communication is more than just speech. At Young Allied Health we are proud to be apart of helping your journey in anyway we can. #youngalliedhealth #speechpathologyweek #communicatingwithconfidence
11.01.2022 Talking About Teletherapy...with Tiff! As you are likely already aware, to help with maintaining safety during COVID-19, weve been offering teletherapy and have been so excited by the amazing feedback we have received. We knew it was a well researched and effective alternative to face-to-face therapy, but we have been blown away by the enthusiastic response by just how many of our clients love it. Yes there have been the occasional technical glitches or audio issues, but... generally these have been able to be swiftly resolved and teletherapy has gone off without a hitch. This week, we caught up with our speech pathologist Tiffany to chat about her experience with teletherapy so far. Q: Tiff, whats your impression of teletherapy so far? What are some of the benefits? Tiff: As clinicians at Young Allied Health, the biggest benefit is that we have been able to continue our services for all our clients in the form of face-to-face or Telehealth sessions. As the world faces new challenges so do we, as Telehealth was uncharted territory for many of us. We ask our clients to be flexible every day in trying new things, it was only fitting we did the same. We accepted the challenge and rose to the occasion. Q: What has helped make teletherapy smoother? Tiff: The overwhelming support from within our team and also from external providers has made the transition to teletherapy a well-supported change. Telehealth has a wealth of research supporting its effectiveness, but they never mentioned how fun it would be! Being greeted by a cheery face on our screens who ready to learn, has warmed all of our hearts. Our clients appear to love this new style of therapy and for some it has made participating even more motivating. Q: What kind of feedback have you received so far about teletherapy? Tiff: Weve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from many of our clients, even when the sessions may not have gone to plan. Overcoming internet glitches and resources you thought would be amazing that turn out to be a flop, are only the small things that make sessions fun. If youre yet to discover teletherapy but would like to give it a try, please dont hesitate to contact our team today.

09.01.2022 In the last few years, as part of Speech Pathology Week, Speech Pathology Australia has produced a range of video case studies to increase awareness of communication disability and role speech pathologist play in ensuring Australians communicate with confidence. These case studies have involved interviews with speech pathologists and their clients, and highlight the challenges faced every day by Australians with communication disability. The case studies also highlight the ...fact that not all communication is speech and why communication access is so important for every Australian. 07.01.2022 How to Sing with Toddlers The Hanen Way Music can soothe and calm, it can distract children during stressful or difficult moments, and it can also be exciting and stimulating and make kids want to dance! Toddlers (aged 1-3 years) enjoy music in a variety of ways, including moving to the rhythm, dancing, beating a drum, doing some of the actions, and even singing the words of familiar songs. Singing with your child the 'Hanen Way' means:... Building in opportunities for your child to participate during the song. Using repetition to help your child learn new words. When to sing: Washing your childs hands Diaper changing/going potty Getting dressed Getting in the car Cleaning up the toys Putting on shoes It doesnt matter what you sing or whether or not you can even carry a tune your toddler will enjoy this time connecting with you! Does coffee count as food?... What made you want to become a Speech Pathologist? I have always wanted to work in healthcare, and chose speech pathology because our profession involves many different topics; speech, language, voice, fluency, swallowing; from babies, toddlers, school aged children to the geriatric population. There is always something new to learn! What is the most rewarding thing about your job? I love following their journey week to week and seeing them achieve things that many of us take for granted. What is your most cherished memory from working at Young Allied Health? Its hard to choose just one, but it has to be the session I introduced one of my students to an AAC system (Proloquo2Go). The smile on their face was incredible as they began to learn to combine words to make requests and comments, where previously their expressive language was limited to single words. Those moments make coming to work so rewarding.

05.01.2022 Its international eat your vegetables day! Well if theres one day that could cause stress to lots of parents this is it! Eating vegetables can be a nightmare for kids who are picky eaters. They have some unique flavours, different textures and smells, as well as though vibrant colours that can overwhelm a sensitive palate. Heres our top tips for trying out some veggies with your little ones:... 1. Play! Encourage your child to explore and play with vegetables to help them learn about them. If the child knows they can safely explore the food without being forced to eat it, this is where the magic happens. 2. Keep it fun! Use your imagination and see what kind of cool shapes you cut the veggies into, what kind of creations you can make by stacking the cut up pieces or seeing what sound they make? 3. Praise ANY positive interaction with a vegetable. That was so cool the way you smelled your broccoli! or Wow I liked the way you squished that pumpkin how did it feel on your hands? a. For a little one who is very anxious about food, it can be a big deal if they just tolerate it on the table. Any small step with tolerating and interacting with challenging foods should be celebrated so your child knows youve got their back. #eatinghealthy #toddlereating #youngalliedhealth #exploreourfood

04.01.2022 At Young Allied, we will endeavour to provide regular homework for you to complete between sessions. We believe that home practice is an essential element of the therapy process and that a once-a-week therapy visit will not fix any client. Heres our top three quick tips to help you get the most out of therapy: 1. Be consistent.... Make sure youre on time and keep your appointments. Each session builds on previous ones and it is important to keep the momentum going with progress. Too long between sessions can cause the child to forget a skill they learnt in the previous session, which means instead of moving forward, we will have to re-hash the previous lesson. This is different to children who require several sessions to master a particular skill. This refers to skills that are acquired during therapy we like these not to be forgotten before our next session! 2. Do your homework. We wish that our 45 minute sessions once a week or once a fortnight was enough, but we can be honest with you, its not. It is absolutely critical to do your homework to ensure retention of learning and generalisation of skills to other settings. The bottom line is, children who do regular homework make faster progress. If you want to get out of therapy quick? Do homework. 3. Give it time. Therapy is a process, not a magic pill. We have no magic wands and success takes time and dedication. Progress is influenced by many factors. As your child progresses, we can adjust our therapy goals to ensure they continue to grow and develop. But reduce your frustration by being realistic about expectations therapy can take anywhere from several months to several years, depending on the issue. This is even with your therapist completing the best evidence based practice and you completing your homework activities. It still takes time, but it will be worth it in the end when your child improves their independence, communication and feeding skills! #youngalliedhealth #yah #tipsandtricks
