25.01.2022 Congratulations Ellie! YAL are so proud to have been able to support you on your educational journey

24.01.2022 Happy 90th Birthday to our First Born! Many of you may not know that Araluen Botanic Park was originally established by YAL in the early years of 1930 and was used as a camp ground. JJ 'Boss' Simons was our founder and had a passion for educating young Australians in more than just literacy and numeracy. Thus Camp Simons was born, it allowed city kids to be one with nature and allowed those who travelled from the country to escape responsibility and just be kids. Attached are some pictures of our people building Camp Simons and the celebrations during the first ever opening.

22.01.2022 National Sorry Day In the special event of today being National Sorry Day I just wanted to touch base on racism. My whole life I’ve been subjected to racism and at a very young age I not only questioned who I was as a a person but my identity and my belonging to the indigenous community. From a young age I experienced with my own eyes the snatching of the bag as my dark skinned grandmother walked past or the the weird looks whenever I walked in with my family or ev...en when my family sat down anywhere, families would move or how someone would rather stand on a 40 minute bus ride then sit next to us. I’m no stranger to racism nor do I ever think I will be, but I doesn’t mean I can take every racist comment with a brave front. Recently I decided to delete tiktok, I became so sick of explaining myself and explaining the oppression that my people have faced and still continue to face today, the amount of people who made fun of my indigenous features, calling me an abo, telling me that I would never be anything else then a drunk, or telling me how I should get over the pain my people feel each day and stay silent because my voice is to opinionated or too controversial. I never give into racist uneducated people but it’s not about letting them win, it’s about not letting them have a emotional hold on me. I will never stop using my voice to educate, I will never be silenced by uneducated people who don’t know the pain of my people and I will never stop speaking my truth. My people are the oldest living culture alive , we are survivors, we will not be silenced not now, not ever. I fight for the justice of my people. The unlawful deaths incarceration, the intergenerational trauma that my people carry. The fact that my people are more likely to die 10 years younger then a non indigenous Australian. The fact that suicide is the 3rd leading death among my people and let’s not forget the racism we face everyday and feeling we always have to prove ourselves. I will not be silenced, I will not give you the satisfaction of becoming what you think I am and I will not break to your meaningless words. My name is Shontae Coyne and I am a proud Noongar Woman and I will fight for justice. See more

16.01.2022 Update Update! Hey guys Just a quick update of what I’ve been up to in my holidays.... Last week I was in Brisbane for the Gillette Academy which is a cricket camp run by cricket Australia at the national cricket centre. The whole experience was amazing. The facilities and coaches were on another level and it was great to see what the standard is like at the top level. I also got to meet Chris Lynn (me and him in the photo) the Brisbane heat captain and he gave me some great advice and had some funny stories about his career. Uni starts next week for me and I can’t wait to get back into it. I’ll use some of my scholarship money to get books that I need for my courses in the next week. Until next time, Hugh

13.01.2022 Update Update! Hey guys, Kawlija here! These first few weeks of march have been pretty full-on. Most of my classes have had at least one, if not two, assessments that I’ve needed to complete. It’s been a bit to juggle and organise how to balance everything that I’ve got to do, but I think I’ve managed. ... A couple weeks ago I celebrated my 17th birthday, so that was a really nice. I didn’t do anything too big, I just went out with a couple friends and had a nice night out and enjoyed myself. About a week after my birthday, it was the one year anniversary of when I shaved my hair to donate to the Leukaemia Foundation and raised over $780 to help those affected by blood cancer. I think that shaving my head is one of the best things I’ve ever done, I feel like an action that I’ve made has really put a positive impact out in the world. I would have loved to shave it again this year, but I currently don’t have a lot of hair to donate, what with how much I’ve enjoyed having short hair for the last 12 months. That’s been the majority of what has been going on with me these last few weeks, I will be sure to update you all soon! Until next time, Kawlija-Merle Brahim

10.01.2022 In spirit of R U okay day It’s so important to have discussions with our students about their mental health. It’s not a taboo subject any more and more clarity and hopefulness can be the most comforting thing for a student who need some help. It’s okay to not be okay, as long as you put things in place to look after yourself. https://www.ted.com//hailey_hardcastle_why_students_should

07.01.2022 Shanaye's Story Shanaye came to recieve a schoalrship with YAL in 2017, She was a foster child and had been in and out of foster homes from the age of 4 when she was taken away from her mother who couldn't look after herself or Shanaye. After years of searching she found a family that loved her like one of their own and they helped her pursue her passions with science and STEM subjects. With YAL funds he bought herself a microscope and started tinkering with the wonders of the world, from micro to macro explorations. She is now in year 11 and from the last update we recieved she expressed her thanks to YAL for giving her an oppourtunity she thought no one would give her in a million years. She was given hope and a second family she hadn't been searching for. We can't wait to see what you continue to achieve Shanaye!

02.01.2022 Jarrod Story Jarrod is a passionate AFL footballer who dreamed of making this his full-time career. His story is one that starts off wholesome growing up the eldest of three children Jarrod was and is the best big brother a sibling could ask for. In November of 2016 Jarrod was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia (Bone Marrow Failure). A bone marrow transplant was his only hope of survival, after tests upon tests they discovered his little brother was a match and the process... began of aggressive chemo and isolation. Jarrod didn't let this stop him for a second! He battled and is now over 3 years cancer free. Jarrod has now completed his scholarship with YAL but he put in hard work and managed to achieve an ATAR that got him into ECU and his dream course in Sport Science. He continues to check in with YAL and continues to express his thanks to YAL for the confidence that they helped him achieve and appreciates YAL continuing to look out for him as he moves through his journey in life. If you want to follow in Jarrod's footsteps apply for a scholarship now! https://www.yal.org.au/scholarship/educational-scholarship/
