23.01.2022 CHANGE VS GROWTH Not sure about you guys - but we are definitely feeling the spring vibes here at the studio. Over the past few months - we’ve all had to cope with a lot of changes... the way we work, socialise, take breaks & move around in the community looks different than it did this time last year. ... The truth is that change is inevitable. No matter how much we tell ourselves that this is new.... it’s not. The pace might have picked up, or perhaps we just live in parts of the world where we’ve been relatively unaffected by war, poverty and uncertainty as a collective community. Its been uncomfortable knowing that the ideas we build around a concept of stability can change at any moment... but in truth - this is happening all around us - all the time - whether we choose to notice or not. Can we find a way to grow? To integrate daily mindfulness practices that help us ride the uncertainty with grace & to find our roots when the wind picks up? Spring is here - so its energetically a time to make the most of the warmer weather, to invest in yourself and make small, sustainable changes. 06.01.2022 'Be Like Water', a Restorative Yoga Workshop w/ Renee The happenings of this year have had many of us feeling the all-encompassing effects of stress, overwhelm and fatigue. In the throws of disarray, we often find ourselves unsure of how to effectively ride the waves of change that life brings. We resist, we refuse, we try to combat change with our mental militia, we grip to comfort for dear life - without realising that, irrespective of our protests, ch...ange comes, and we can either fight it, or move with it, ‘like water’. ‘Be like water’ is a 2.5 hour workshop where you will delve into the heavenly practice of Restorative Yoga, a nourishing experience of passive healing where you are led into a deep state of relaxation using bolsters, blankets and blocks to prop and support the body in poses for long periods of time (10 - 20 minutes). No tension, no holding on, no effort. This easeful practice, imbued with Buddhist teachings, will assist you in moving towards a state of complete physiological relaxation, one where you embody the serene qualities of water - formless, fluid, adaptable - open to, and at peace with, change. 03.01.2022 A must read available in-studio now According to Buddhism, the root of suffering is neither the feeling of pain nor of sadness nor even of meaninglessness. Rather, the real root of suffering is this never-ending and pointless pursuit of ephemeral feelings, which causes us to be in a constant state of tension, restlessness and dissatisfaction. Due to this pursuit, the mind is never satisfied. Even when experiencing pleasure, it is not content, because i...t fears this feeling might soon disappear, and craves that this feeling should stay and intensify. People are liberated from suffering not when they experience this or that fleeting pleasure, but rather when they understand the impermanent nature of all their feelings, and stop craving them. This is the aim of Buddhist meditation practices. In meditation, you are supposed to closely observe your mind and body, witness the ceaseless arising and passing of all your feelings, and realise how pointless it is to pursue them. When the pursuit stops, the mind becomes very relaxed, clear and satisfied. All kinds of feelings go on arising and passing joy, anger, boredom, lust but once you stop craving particular feelings, you can just accept them for what they are. You live in the present moment instead of fantasising about what might have been. The resulting serenity is so profound that those who spend their lives in the frenzied pursuit of pleasant feelings can hardly imagine it. It is like a man standing for decades on the seashore, embracing certain ‘good’ waves and trying to prevent them from disintegrating, while simultaneously pushing back ‘bad’ waves to prevent them from getting near him. Day in, day out, the man stands on the beach, driving himself crazy with this fruitless exercise. Eventually, he sits down on the sand and just allows the waves to come and go as they please. 01.01.2022 We are SO excited to have Laura join our weekly schedule, teaching Vinyasa at 4pm on Saturdays (from this afternoon!) and 8am on Sundays Laura has been practicing yoga since 2005, and has been a regular face in Younga Yoga classes since moving to Wollongong in 2016. Laura completed her teaching training with Deb and Russ in 2019. Laura initially came to yoga for the physical benefits, but stayed for the meditative and spiritual aspect...s as much as for the physical practice. She has undertaken Vipassana meditation retreats and read widely on meditation and yoga. Her classes are energetic and flowing, but incorporate a strong focus on the breath and on how we can use our physical practice to benefit our emotional and spiritual lives off the yoga mat. Laura has a PhD in sociology, has worked for many years in sustainability research, and recently became a mum.
